Amita Singh

Amita Singh is an Indian political scientist, currently serving as a professor of law and governance at Jawaharlal Nehru University, in Delhi, India. [1] She is also a member of the Indian Council of Social Science Research. [2] She is the recipient of numerous awards, and has published widely on public administration in India. [1] Singh has been criticized for controversial statements made regarding Dalits, Muslims, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Career

Singh completed her higher education with a Ph.D. in political science from Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and taught at the Vanasthali Vidyapeeth University in Rajasthan, as well as at Kamala Nehru College, Lady Shri Ram College, and PGDAV College in Delhi University. [1] She is currently a professor at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, at Jawaharlal Nehru University. [1] Singh also serves on a number of government boards and committees in relation to administration and governance. [1] She is currently the chair of the university's Special Center for Disaster Research. [3]

Singh gained public attention in 2016, when she described Dalit and Muslim teachers at Jawaharlal Nehru University as 'anti-national'. [4] Following this interview, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, the National Commission for Minorities, and the Delhi Minorities Commission sent Singh and Jawaharlal Nehru University notices asking for an explanation of her remarks, following which Jawaharlal Nehru University instituted proceedings against her as well. Singh stated to media that her comments had been taken out of context, and that she did not know that the interview would be published. [5] [6] [7] [8]

In June 2017, Singh was appointed as a member of the Indian Council of Social Science Research. [9]

Controversies

In 2016, Singh led a group of professors who accused students and other faculty members at Jawaharlal Nehru University of engaging in illegal activities, in a document that they titled Jawaharlal Nehru University: The Den of Secessionism and Terrorism, and particularly singling out students from Kashmir and North-east India, and describing Muslim and Dalit students as "anti-national". [10] [11] In response to her remarks, she was required to appear before the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, for her statements that targeted Dalit students, who have faced historic and ongoing discrimination on the basis of caste. [12]

In 2019, Singh asked for the public execution of 40 Kashmiri Indian citizens in exchange for the lives of the service personnel that had been killed in the Pulwama terror attack, and in a post on Twitter, publicly accused then Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of negligence. [8] [13] [14] Singh subsequently reiterated these remarks in an interview with Indian Express , stating that her call for the execution of Indian citizens was so that Chief Minister Mufti would "realise what is pain." [8]

In 2019, Singh was also the subject of a university investigation following allegations of discrimination against Muslim students at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The complaint alleged that she had referred to Muslim students at the university, in particular, those from Kashmir, as terrorists. [15] The Jawaharlal Nehru Teachers' Association condemned the remarks and requested an inquiry into her conduct, following which Singh filed a police complaint against the teachers' association. [16] Singh has since filed a criminal complaint against the students who complained to the university about her remarks, accusing them of attempting to incite violence. [17]

In 2002, he was the youngest person to be appointed as vice chancellor of a public university in independent India. Mattoo's advice on policy matters has been sought across political parties and across governments, including by Prime Ministers Atal Behari Vajpayee and Dr Manmohan Singh. Following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution of India, he has offered a political roadmap for securing the future of Jammu and Kashmir. He is an elected Fellow of several major Indian science academies and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and is a recipient of many honours, including the 1987 Shanti Swarup Bhatangar Prize, the highest Indian award in the science and technology categories. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to science and technology.

Kanhaiya Kumar is an Indian political activist who served as the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union and leader of the All India Students Federation (AISF). He served as National Executive Council member of Communist Party of India. He joined Indian National Congress on 28 September 2021.

On 9 February 2016, some students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a protest on their campus against the capital punishment meted out to the 2001 Indian Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, and Kashmiri separatist Maqbool Bhat. The organizers of the event were former members of the Democratic Students' Union (DSU). The event was held despite the university administration withdrawing permission for the event shortly before it was due to begin, due to protests by members of the student union of ABVP. The event saw clashes between various student groups. A video was circulated by Indian news channel Zee news in which a small group of individuals, whom a later investigation described as outsiders to the university wearing masks, shouted "anti-India" slogans. The slogans were criticized by many individuals, including political leaders and students of JNU.

Shehla Rashid Shora is an Indian human rights activist who has pursued her Ph.D. at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She was vice-president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) in 2015–16 and was a member of the All India Students Association (AISA). She rose to prominence whilst leading the student agitation calling for the release for Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others who were arrested on charges of sedition in February 2016 for participating and organizing sloganeering in JNU.

Valerian Rodrigues is an Indian political scientist. He is known for his influential work on Babasaheb Ambedkar, and for his formulations of themes in Modern Indian Political Thought. Nandu Ram is an Indian sociologist and retired professor. He is the former dean of school of social sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and was one of the founding professors of the Dr. Ambedkar Chair in Sociology at JNU.

Sumeet Samos is an Indian anti-caste scholar and rapper from Odisha, India. He writes and sings in English, Hindi and Odia. His first hip-hop single "Ladai Seekh Le" was released in 2018.

Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) is a student organization formed on 15 November 2014 at Jawaharlal Nehru University on Birsa Munda's birth anniversary. It claims to work for student rights and the issues affecting SCs, STs, OBCs and other minority groups. BAPSA says it stands for assertion, follows Ambedkarite ideology and is critical of both Left- and Right-wing forces on campus. BAPSA is also active in Central University of Gujarat.

Aishe Ghosh is an Indian politician and student activist. She is a former President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union and is a Member of the Students' Federation of India. She was also the CPI(M) candidate from Jamuria constituency for 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election and lost to Hareram Singh.
