Anders Nordberg (born 17 February 1978) is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. He received a bronze medal at the 2004 World Orienteering Championship, and again a bronze medal in 2007. [1] He finished second in the overall World Cup 2007. [2] [3]
Nordberg was born in Skien, a small town of 50,000 people in Telemark county, Norway. An avid sportsman, he had competed in cross-country skiing, track and field athletics, and football. He started training in orienteering relatively late, at the age of 14, and had no orienteering competitors in his family. However, already the next year he won a silver medal in the Norwegian youth championship in Hovedløpet. [2]
After finishing school in 1997 he served for a year in the Royal Norwegian Navy. Then he began his studies at Agder University College, first for computer engineer (1998–2001) and then changed to the business administration and economics program (Siviløkonom, 2001 — 2005). [4] In 2005, Nordberg completed his studies and became a professional sportsman, occasionally doing various part-time jobs. Before the 2006 World Orienteering Championship (WOC), he moved from Skien to Oslo. During the preparation, he trained in three high-altitude camps — two in winter in South Africa and one in summer in Italy. However, for the next WOC in 2007 he trained in Norway only. In orienteering, Nordberg specializes in long distance events. He is a football fan and an avid supporter of Norwegian club Odd Grenland and British Liverpool F.C. [2]
Nordberg collected three gold medals out of total four at Nordic championship in 2005, and received a silver medal in 1997. He won a gold medal at the 1996 National "night" championship, a silver medal in 2003, and a bronze medal in 2004. He was first at the 2006 National championships, and again in 2007 was awarded the King's cup. He was elected Orienteer of the year 2007 by Norwegian sports journalists. [2]
Nordberg had started competing internationally only at the age of 25 at the Nordic Championship 2003 in Sweden, but failed to win any medal. The next year, he finished third in Västerås 2004 World Orienteering Championship (WOC) in the middle distance run. He also got a bronze medal in Kyiv 2007 WOC in the long distance event. By September 2009, his best career achievement is a silver medal at Olomouc 2008 WOC in the long distance run. Nordberg also competed in other orienteering disciplines with the best results being 11th in sprint at Vasteras 2004 WOC and 4th in relay at Kyiv 2007 Championship. He had participated in several European championships, but never got onto the podium — his best European result was 4th in relay in Roskilde 2004, Denmark. [2]
At WOC 2009 in Miskolc, Hungary, during the last leg of the relay race Thierry Gueorgiou (France), Michal Smola (Czech Republic) and Nordberg were close behind the lead runner, Martin Johansson (Sweden), when Johansson suffered a 12 cm deep penetrating trauma from a stick in his right thigh. While Nordberg ran for help, Gueorgiou and Smola pulled out the stick, harnessed the wound using a shirt and a GPS tracking strap and then carried Johansson to a road where Nordberg brought a physician to. Nordberg has represented the clubs Skien OK (1993–1999), Kristiansand OK (1999–2005), Bækkelagets SK (2006–2007), Halden SK (2008-2011) and Vaajakosken Terä from 2011.
Thierry Gueorgiou is a French orienteer who holds the record for gold medals won at the World Orienteering Championships for a male athlete, with 14 gold medals between 2003 and 2017. Gueorgiou has won more than 20 gold medals in international competitions, including the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) middle distance event a record eight times: 2003–2005, 2007–2009, 2011 and 2017.
Helena Bergman is a Swedish orienteer who became World Champion in the sprint distance in Miskolc, Hungary in 2009. She lives in Stockholm and competes for OK Ravinen. She is married to Gustav Bergman.
Daniel Hubmann is a Swiss orienteering competitor, world champion in all three individual disciplines and multiple winner of the overall Orienteering World Cup. He is the brother of Martin Hubmann. Daniel also has his own fan club which is run by New Zealand Orienteer Joseph Lynch.
Marianne Andersen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. She has won twelve individual medals in the world and European championships, as well as winning nine national championships. In 2017 she won a silver medal in the middle distance after seven years without a medal.
Olav Lundanes is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, hailing from Ålesund. He has won gold medal at the World Orienteering Championships ten times and the European Orienteering Championships four times. He competes for Halden SK.
Øystein Kvaal Østerbø is a Norwegian orienteering and ski-orienteering competitor. He finished overall third in the Orienteering World Cup in 2004, and won a silver medal in the relay in the 2004 World Ski Orienteering Championships. He has competed in all fifteen World Orienteering Championships since his debut in 2004 until 2018, obtaining his first two medals in Inverness in 2015; in the relay and mixed sprint relay, respectively. His best individual achievements are fourth places in the sprint in 2005 and 2010.
François Gonon is a French orienteering competitor. He has received gold and silver medals with the French relay team in both world championships and European championships. He currently competes for the French orienteering club O'JURA and for the Swedish orienteering club IFK Göteborg.
Michal Smola is a Czech orienteering competitor, silver medalist from the world championships, and junior world champion. He became Junior World Champion in the short distance in Nove Mesto na Morave in 2000, and with the Czech team in relay in 2000 and in 2001. His best achievement by September 2009 is silver medal in the middle distance at the 2008 World Orienteering Championship in Olomouc.
Martin Johansson is a Swedish orienteering, ski-orienteering, and cross-country skiing competitor, a medallist at the orienteering world championships, and a 2004 Junior World Champion in relay. He received bronze medals in sprint at the World Orienteering Championships in Kyiv 2007 and Olomouc 2008. His brother, Lars, is a member of the Rockford Icehogs
Route choice is a tactic in orienteering and related sports such as rogaining and adventure racing. These sports involve navigation from one control point to the next and, in most cases, the choice of route is left to the competitor. This is provided the rules permit route choice and the course is designed so that a choice exists. In trail orienteering and European style mounted orienteering route choice is not permitted. In United States style foot orienteering, route choice is absent from White courses, limited in Yellow courses, and a crucial element in the design of more advanced courses. Given a choice of route, the competitor evaluates trade-offs among such factors as distance, amount of "climb", degree and extent of "fight", mode of travel, technical difficulty, and the competitor's own preferences.
Ruslan Gritsan is a Russian competitor and multiple world champion in both ski-orienteering and mountain bike orienteering.
Anders Hauge is a Norwegian ski-orienteering competitor. He received a silver medal in the relay event at the 2004 World Ski Orienteering Championships in Östersund, together with Øystein Kvaal Østerbø, Tommy Olsen and Eivind Tonna. He placed 11th in the long distance, 8th in the middle distance, and 14th in the sprint at the 2004 World Championships. He competed at the 2005 World Championships in Levi, and placed 15th in the sprint and sixth in the relay.
Michaela Gigon is an Austrian mountain bike orienteer and several times world champion. She has competed at all World MTB Orienteering Championships from 2002 to 2010, won individual gold medals in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010, and in relay in 2009.
Adrian Jackson is an Australian mountain bike orienteering competitor and World Champion. He has won individual gold medals at the 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2010 World MTB Orienteering Championships.
Ksenia Chernykh is a Russian mountain bike orienteer and World Champion. She won individual gold medals at the 2007 and 2008 World MTB Orienteering Championships, and a relay gold medal in 2006.
Bodil Holmström is a Finnish orienteering competitor. She won a bronze medal in the relay at the 2001 Junior World Orienteering Championships in Miskolc. She competed at the World Games in 2009, where she won a silver medal in the relay, and placed 7th in the sprint and 12th in the middle distance. At the 2009 World Orienteering Championships in Miskolc she won a bronze medal with the Finnish relay team.

Philippe Adamski is a French orienteering competitor. He has been a member of the French club Tous Azimuts Douai since he started orienteering. He also runs for Finnish club Kalevan Rasti.
Line Hagman is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, born in Oppegård. At the 2003 Junior World Orienteering Championships in Põlva she placed fifth in the long distance and won a bronze medal in the relay with the Norwegian team. She competed at the 2004 World Orienteering Championships in Västerås, where she placed 10th in the sprint. At the 2007 World Orienteering Championships in Kyiv she competed in the middle distance, placing 31st. She also competed at the 2010 World Orienteering Championships, where she placed 12th in the middle distance.
