Andrew William Carter (born 29 January 1949) is a male British retired track and field athlete.
Carter participated in the men's 800 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. Carter finished sixth in a time of 1:46.55. [1]
Carter won the bronze medal at the 1971 European Championships in Helsinki, Finland, in the men's 800 metres, behind Yevgeniy Arzhanov (Soviet Union) and Dieter Fromm (East Germany) in a time of 1:46.16. He won the Amateur Athletic Association of England (AAA) title in 1970, 1972 and 1973. Carter won the European Cup in 1973 in Edinburgh defeating the Olympic silver medalist Arzhanov in 1:46.44. In 1974 he won a silver medal representing England in the 4×400 metre relay event, at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand. He finished fifth in the 800 metres in a time of 1:45.97. [2] [3] [4]
Carter recorded his fastest time of 1:45.12 in 1973, [5] winning the AAA Championship at London’s Crystal Palace. [6] He improved the British record for 800 metres on three occasions. His other personal bests included: 400 metres – 48.0;[ citation needed ] 1,000 metres – 2:18.5 (1974); 1 mile – 3:59.3 (1972). [5] [6]
The U.S. magazine Track & Field News ' annual world rankings ranked Carter third at 800 metres in 1971. They ranked him eighth in 1972 and sixth in 1973. [7]
Ian Stewart MBE is a Scottish former long-distance running athlete. Ian Stewart was one of the world's leading distance runners between the late 1960s and mid-1970s. Stewart won the bronze medal in the Men's 5000 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Stewart also won the following championships: European 5,000 metres (1969), Commonwealth 5,000 metres (1970), European Indoor and World Cross Country (1975).

The men's 800 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, took place on 2 September 1972. Sixty-one athletes from 46 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at three since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by 0.03 seconds by Dave Wottle of the United States, the first title in the event for an American since 1956 and the eighth overall win in the men's 800 metres for the United States. Yevhen Arzhanov won the Soviet Union's first medal in the event with silver, while Mike Boit kept Kenya on the podium for the third straight Games with bronze.

Born in New York City to a French father, he attended Mater Christi High School, where he set the still-standing New York State Record in the 880 yds. While attending Fordham University, he was the 1973 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Champion. He still holds the Fordham record for indoor mile, 1000 yards, and outdoor 800m. At the 1976 Summer Olympics he competed in the men's 800 metres. Philippe set multiple French records in the 800m, 1000m, and 4x1500m relay distances. He won both the 1973 and 1974 French Athletics Championships in the 800m.
