Andrew Robertson Irvine MBE (born 16 September 1951) is a former president of the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU),and a former Scottish international rugby player. [1] He earned fifty one Scotland caps,captaining the team on fifteen occasions,and scored 250 points for Scotland. [2] He went on three British Lions tours.
Irvine was born in Edinburgh,on 16 September 1951. He was educated at James Gillespie's Primary School and George Heriot's School. [3] From there he went on to Edinburgh University where he graduated in Geography.
Irvine originally played for Heriot's Rugby Club. [1]
Irvine represented Edinburgh District in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. [4]
He played for Scotland 'B' against France 'B' on 11 November 1972. [5]
As fullback for Scotland,Irvine won 51 caps,between 1972–82 and scored ten tries. [1] His first cap was against the All Blacks in December 1972. [6] His last international appearance was against Australia on 10 July 1982. [7]
Irvine earned British Lions caps against South Africa (1974),New Zealand (1977) and South Africa (1980). He scored 156 points in fifteen games on the 1974 Lion tour. [8] He also played for the Barbarians during their 1976 Easter Tour. In the 1974 tour,he adopted many South African tactics and styles of play,although JPR Williams was preferred as full back for the tests,limiting Irvine to two test appearances on the wing. [2] [1]
Irvine vies with Ken Scotland,Gavin Hastings and Stuart Hogg for the title of Scotland's greatest ever fullback,with incisive running at a blistering pace from the back his trademark. [9] A number of polls have voted Irvine Scotland's greatest player, [10] and he is generally considered [11] one of the best,if not the best,attacking full backs of his era. [12] His presence in the line often distracted defenders even when he did not have possession. [13]
In May 2005,Irvine announced his intention to stand for president of the Scottish Rugby Union. [14] He was elected. He announced his readiness to stand for a second term at the end of March 2006. [15] and was unopposed. [16] He stepped down from the role in June 2007,having served the maximum of two years in the post. [17]
In August 2010 Irvine was appointed as the first independent chairman of Celtic Rugby. [18]
In March 2010 the Bill McLaren Foundation launched,with Irvine and John Rutherford directors. [19]
Irvine was the tour manager of the 2013 British &Irish Lions tour to Australia. [20] It was the first successful Lions' tour since 1997,with the Lions winning the series 2-1.
After graduation Irvine followed a career in chartered surveying. In 2004,after 26 years at the property consultancy firm Jones Lang LaSalle,eight of them as managing director,he was appointed as chairman. [21]
Irvine has appeared as a guest on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound radio programme to comment on international rugby games. He has also coached rugby at Heriot's Rugby Club.
Irvine was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1979 Birthday Honours for services to Rugby Football in Scotland. [22]
In 2002 Irvine was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. [23] He is an inductee of the International Rugby Hall of Fame. [12]
The Scotland national rugby union team represents the Scottish Rugby Union in men's international rugby union. The team takes part in the annual Six Nations Championship,where they are the current Calcutta Cup and Doddie Weir Cup holders. They also participate in the Rugby World Cup,which takes place every four years.
Andrew Gavin Hastings, is a Scottish former rugby union player. A fullback,he is widely regarded to be one of the best ever Scottish rugby players and was one of the outstanding players of his generation,winning 61 caps for Scotland,20 of which as captain. He played for Watsonians,London Scottish,Cambridge University,Scotland and the British Lions. He twice toured with the Lions,to Australia in 1989 and as captain on the 1993 tour to New Zealand.
James Telfer is a Scottish former rugby union coach and player. As a player,he won 21 international caps in the amateur era,also having a career as a headmaster at Hawick High School and Galashiels Academy and Forrester High School as a chemistry teacher. With Sir Ian McGeechan he had success with both the Scotland national team and the British Lions.

Roy James Laidlaw is a former Scotland international rugby union player.
Craig Minto Chalmers is a former Scotland international rugby union player and coach. He represented Scotland,the British Lions and the Barbarians at international level. He made 60 international appearances as a player for the Scotland national team and scored 166 points. He played at fly-half with his playing career beginning at Melrose in the amateur era and with the professional era seeing him play Border Reivers and Glasgow Warriors before moving on to English sides Harlequins,Worcester Warriors and Pertemp Bees. He had coaching roles with Melrose and the Scotland national under-20 rugby union team. He later has had a business career in security.
Heriot's Rugby Club,formerly known as Heriot's FP,is one of Scotland's senior rugby football clubs in the Scottish Rugby Union,whose part-timeprofessional team,Heriot's Rugby play in FOSROC Super 6 with the Men's 1st XV playing in the Men's Scottish Premiership. The women play in Scottish Womens Premiership.
Ayr Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club. Its professional men's side currently plays as Ayrshire Bulls in the Super 6 competition;and its women's side play in the Scottish Womens National One. The club also runs a "Club XV" which competes in the Tennent's National League 1,a 2nd XV "Ayr-Millbrae",which plays in the SRU West Reserve League Division 1,and various age group teams,from age 4,up to age 18.

Edinburgh University Rugby Football Club is a leading rugby union side based in Edinburgh,Scotland which currently plays its fixtures in the Edinburgh Regional Shield competition and the British Universities Premiership. It is one of the eight founder members of the Scottish Rugby Union. In the years prior to the SRU's introduction of club leagues in 1973 and the advent of professionalism in the 1990s,EURFC was a major club power and it won the 'unofficial' Scottish Club championship several times. It remains a club with an all-student committee,and is only open to students of the University of Edinburgh. The club runs a men's team and a women's team;both playing in the university leagues.
