Angel City is a populated place on the Horti Point peninsula of Merritt Island, in Brevard County, Florida, United States. Angel City had a post office between 1927 and 1931. [1] It is believed that the community was named for an early settler, John Angel. [1] Hattie Worley, wife of Oscar Worley, the bridge tender, named Angel City after the first homesteader, Captain Angel from Rhode Island.

Merritt Island Causeway Bridge

The Merritt Island Causeway linked Cocoa Beach to Angel City via a wooden toll bridge from 1922 to 1941. A plaque that marks this location states, "On this site on April 19, 1923, a wooden drawbridge across the Banana River was opened to the public linking Merritt Island to Cocoa Beach. To pay for the bridge, there was a round trip toll of .20 for car and driver plus .04 charge for each additional passenger. Upon completion of State Road 520 in 1941, the old bridge was dismantled. Only the concrete abutment and a few pilings remain to mark the location of the bridge that opened Cocoa Beach to development."

Oscar Worley was the toll bridge tender until the present SR 520 was opened on June 5, 1941. Oscar Worley was denied the opportunity to tend the new bridge, and instead ran a fish business in Angel City until his death in 1956 at age of 83. The Worleys were the second family to homestead in Angel City.[ citation needed ] The road Worley Avenue is named after them. The Worley family still resides in Angel City. Oscar Worley had a Grand Son, Donald Worley whom was born on the Bridge and his birth certificate reads: place of Birth reader Banana River toll bridge.

Geography

Angel City is bounded to the south and east by the Banana River, to the west by Newfound Harbor, and to the north is SR 520. Buck Point is the southernmost point of the peninsula where Newfound Harbor ends at Banana River.

There are two uninhabited islands south of Buck Point named Brady and George's islands, which are accessible from Lotus and Georgiana. These islands are spoil islands. The southern of the two islands, commonly referred to as Bird Island, is popular with locals for boating, camping, and other such recreation. The island has earned this name, not by the overwhelming number of birds that populate it, but by its shape. From the air, the island resembles a pelican in mid-flight. The islands are a popular place for manatee and dolphin sightings. The islands are also home to pelican, great blue heron, seagull, southern stingray and rat snakes. White pelicans can be seen here in late winter, during their migratory journey. The Intracoastal Waterway passes by the islands to the north and east. To the west is Lotus, a part of Merritt Island more commonly known as Honeymoon Hill. To the south, Pineda Causeway can be seen. To the east is Patrick Space Force Base.

State Road 528 (SR 528), alternatively named the Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway, is a partially-tolled state road in the U.S. state of Florida; it is maintained by the Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE), the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Spanning approximately 53 miles (85 km) along a west–east axis, it connects Interstate 4 (I-4) in Orlando with I-95, Titusville, and Cape Canaveral on the Space Coast. It passes close to the tourist areas of Orlando, including SeaWorld and Universal Orlando, and serves the north entrance to Orlando International Airport. Melbourne Causeway Bridge in Florida, United States of America

The Melbourne Causeway is located entirely within Brevard County, Florida in the United States. It is composed of three bridges and connects the municipalities of Melbourne and Indialantic across the Indian River Lagoon in Brevard County. The causeway is part of U.S. 192, whose eastern terminus is located approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) east of the bridge, at SR A1A. East of the bridge, the road is known locally as Fifth Avenue. On the western side, the road continues through downtown Melbourne as Strawbridge Avenue. Each July 4 the bridge is closed for a fireworks show.

State Road 404 (SR 404), the Pineda Causeway, is an east–west divided highway currently running from Interstate 95 (I-95) to SR A1A at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida, US. It was opened as a toll road in 1971 and classified as a state road two years later. The tolls were removed in 1990. It was named after Pineda, a former village east of Suntree on U.S. Route 1 (US 1). The Merritt Island Causeway, mostly in Merritt Island, connects Cocoa, Merritt Island, Florida, and Cocoa Beach, Florida. The causeway transits the Willard Peebles bridge over the Banana River Lagoon. In the 1960s, SR A1A was routed over the eastern causeway from present day SR 520 and SR A1A, to the present day intersection of SR 520 and SR 3 on Merritt Island. The eastern section is known as the Cocoa Beach Causeway.

Lotus, Florida

Lotus is a former village in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is the location of Honeymoon Hill, the highest point on Merritt Island. Only one road runs through the area, CR 3, accessible to the south by Pineda Causeway and from the north via Florida State Road 520.

Tropic is an unincorporated area in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is the southernmost area on Merritt Island, and its identity was absorbed into the census-designated place of Merritt Island during the Space Age of the 1950s and 1960s. This portion of Merritt Island is served by County Road 3 and the Mather's Bridge.

Georgiana is a populated place located on Merritt Island in Brevard County, Florida at latitude 28.288673N and longitude 80.671398W. The elevation is 10 feet. It is about five miles south of the 520 Causeway, situated where the island is about a half-mile wide.
