Angelica Rubio (born May 30,1979) is an American politician who has served in the New Mexico House of Representatives from the 35th district since 2017. [1] [2]
Rubio was born and raised in New Mexico by immigrant parents. She earned her undergraduate degree in Government at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces,before getting a master's degree in Latin American Studies from California State University in Los Angeles. [3] [4] [5] Rubio cites Dolores Huerta as an inspiration in how she opened doors for Latina elected officials. [6]
Rubio has worked in Las Cruces on issues such as minimum wage,a City Council campaign for Kasandra Gandara,and the designation of an Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. [7] Rubio is the chair of the interim committee on Radioactive &Hazardous Materials. [8] She has spoken against the Trump Border Wall,such as voting against allowing New Mexico state land to be used for its construction. [9] Additionally,she introduced the approved House Bill 388,the gender-neutral bathroom bill,requiring New Mexico businesses and public facilities to label single-stall restrooms as gender neutral. Dolores Clara Fernández Huerta is an American labor leader and civil rights activist who,with Cesar Chavez,is a co-founder of the United Farmworkers Association,which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to become the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta helped organize the Delano grape strike in 1965 in California and was the lead negotiator in the workers' contract that was created after the strike.
Same-sex marriage became legally recognized statewide in New Mexico through a ruling of the New Mexico Supreme Court on December 19,2013,requiring county clerks to issue marriage licenses to all qualified couples regardless of gender. Until then,same-sex couples could only obtain marriage licenses in certain counties of the state. Eight of the 33 counties,covering 58% of the state's population,had begun issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in August and September 2013. New Mexico's marriage statute was not specific as to gender,and it was the only state lacking a state statute or constitutional provision explicitly addressing same-sex marriage. Lacking a state law or judicial ruling concerning same-sex marriage prior to December 19,2013,policy for the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples was determined at the county level at the discretion of local issuing authorities i.e.,some counties recognized same-sex marriage and issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples,while others did not.
