Angelina Kanana (born 16 December 1965) is a retired long-distance runner from Kenya, who represented her native country at the 1996 Summer Olympics in the women's marathon race. There she finished in fifteenth place in the overall-rankings. Kanana set her personal best (2:27:24) in the classic distance on 30 April 1995 in Hamburg, Germany.

Mary Teresa Slaney is a retired American middle-distance runner. During her career, she won gold medals in the 1500 meters and 3000 meters at the 1983 World Championships and was the world-record holder in the mile, 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. In total, she set 17 official and unofficial world records, and she was the first woman to break 4:20 for the mile. She also set 36 U.S. national records at distances ranging from 800 meters to 10,000 meters, and has held the U.S. record in the mile, 2000 meters and 3000 meters since the early 1980s, while her 1500 meters record stood for 32 years. In 2003, she was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Gunhild Hoffmeister is a retired East German middle-distance runner. She competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won two silver and one bronze medal, becoming the only German distance runner to win three Olympic medals. Together with Hans Grodotzki she is the only German runner to win two medals at the same Olympics. Her personal best time in 1500 metres was 4:01.4, achieved in July 1976 in Potsdam. This places her ninth on the German all-time list.
Vera Nikolić was a Serbian middle-distance runner, who competed at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, and later coach. She had her best achievements in the 800 m event, in which she won European titles in 1966 and 1971 and set a world record, 2:00.5, on 20 July 1968 holding it until 11 July 1971. She came to the 1968 Olympics as a favorite, but due to the pressure of being the favorite she gave up her semifinal – after leading it for 300 m she suddenly stepped off the track, walked back to the start, sat down and took off her shoes. She set her personal best for the 800 m in the heats at 1972 Olympics before finishing fifth in the final.

Cape Verde competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics which were held in London, United Kingdom from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at London marked its fifth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its debut in 1996. The delegation included Ruben Sança, a long-distance runner; Lidiane Lopes, a sprinter; and Adysângela Moniz, a judoka. Moniz and Sança were also selected as the flag bearers for the opening and closing ceremonies respectively. Of the three Cape Verdean athletes, only Moniz progressed further than the first round.

The women's discus throw field event at the 1972 Olympic Games took place on September 9 & September 10. Armenia Soviet Faina Melnik was the strong favorite to win the gold. She has broken the world record five times since 1971 as well as being the European Champion in the same year. But twice in 1972 she had been beaten by Romanian Argentina Menis. Menis took the lead in round one breaking the Olympic record throw of 64.28 m. In the start of the fourth round Menis lead with Melnik in fifth. Menis then improved her distance to 65.06 m. Melnike threw next and overtook Menis with a throw of 66.62 m which held on to win the gold. Thirteen days later, Menis broke Melnik's world record with a throw of 67.32 m.

The women's event was added to the programme over seventy years later, at the 1988 Olympics. It is the most prestigious 10,000 m race at elite level. The competition format is a straight final between around 30 athletes, although prior to 2004 a qualifying round was held.

Brooke Buschkuehl is an Olympic long jumper from Australia. She is the current Australian & Oceanic Record Holder. She qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Stratton jumped a distance of 6.6m in her Women's long jump heat and therefore qualified for the final. In the final she improved the distance to 6.8m but this was not sufficient to gain a medal. She came seventh, 0.17m less than the eventual winner, Malaika Mihambo of Germany.

Mainly active as a long jumper, but also as a sprinter, she represented her country at the 1956 Summer Olympics, the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, and the 1960 Summer Olympics.
Christine Joy Pfitzinger is a New Zealand former middle-distance runner. She represented New Zealand at the 1988 Summer Olympics, where she competed in the 3000 metres. She won nine New Zealand national athletic championship titles: the 800 metres in 1982 and 1987; the 1500 metres in 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1999; and the 3000 metres in 1984, 1988 and 1990.
