Shitaye Eshete Habtegebrel (born 21 May 1990) is an Ethiopian-born long-distance runner who competes internationally for Bahrain.
She first began competing for the oil-rich Gulf state in 2009, making her debut at the Asian Cross Country Championships in Manama. She won the women's junior title while team-mate Tejitu Daba, another former Ethiopian, completed a Bahraini 1–2. [3] Her debut at the global level came shortly afterwards at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and she finished 24th in the junior race, one place behind Daba. [4] She was entered into the 5000 metres race at the 2009 Asian Athletics Championships in November and she came sixth. [5]
Shitaye made her senior debut the following year, running at the 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and she was eleventh overall in the rankings, leading the Bahrain women alongside Mimi Belete to ninth place in the team competition. [6]
In August she made her first appearance on the IAAF Diamond League, setting a 5000 m best of 15:25.67 minutes at the DN Galan. [7] She was the sole representative for Asia-Pacific in that event at the 2010 IAAF Continental Cup, where she was sixth. [8] The 2010 Asian Games saw her claim her first international medal, as she took third for the bronze medal over 10,000 metres behind Indian duo Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut. [9]
She was one place lower than her previous position at the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, just edging into the top twelve of the women's senior race. [10] However, she led the national team to fourth in the rankings, aided by the presence of Maryam Yusuf Jamal. [11] She performed well on the track that year, taking the 10,000 m title at the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships, [12] the 5000 m title at the 2011 Military World Games, [13] and then breaking the Bahraini record with a run of 31:21.57 minutes to finish sixth in the 10,000 m final at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. [14] She ended the year with a 5000 m bronze and 10,000 m silver at the 2011 Pan Arab Games. [15]
Shitaye began the next season indoors, setting a national record for the 3000 metres to take the title at the 2012 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships. [16] She then finished fifth in the final of that event at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships. [17] Heading outdoors, she won the women's title at the Asian Cross Country Championships, leading a women's sweep of the top three. [18] At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in both the 5000 m and the 10000 m, finishing in 10th place and 6th place respectively, and setting a new national record in the 10000 m. [17] [19]
The next year, 2013, she also finished 6th in the 10000 m at the World Championship after winning the Asian Championship. [20]
She took a career break in 2014 to have a child and returned to competition in late 2015. [21]

She competed in the 10000 m at the 2016 Summer Olympics but was unable to finish the race. [19] She returned to win the 10000 m race at the Asian Championships in 2019. [22]
Kayoko Fukushi is a Japanese long-distance runner, who specializes in the 5000, 10,000 metres and marathon. Fukushi represented Japan at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. She was the bronze medallist in the marathon at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. She holds a marathon best of 2:22:17 hours.
Sabrina Mockenhaupt is a German long-distance runner who specialises in track events and the marathon. She is a two-time winner of the Cologne Marathon and has also won the Frankfurt Marathon and the Berlin Half Marathon. She represented Germany at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics and was the 3000 metres bronze medallist at the 2005 European Indoor Championships. She has a marathon best of 2:26:21, set at the 2010 Berlin Marathon.
Ali Hasan Mahboob is a Kenyan-born Bahraini long-distance runner. He became a naturalized citizen of Bahrain ahead of the 2006 season. His personal best time for the 10,000 metres is 27:22.40 minutes, achieved in May 2012 in Wageningen.
Nadia Ejjafini is a Moroccan-born professional long-distance runner. She switched nationality from her birth country to Bahrain in 2003, and later became an Italian citizen by marriage in 2009.

Charlotte Purdue is a British long-distance runner who competes in the Marathon and Half Marathon, as well as cross country running for Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletics Club. After winning a number of youth titles at national level, she had her first international success at the European Cross Country Championships, winning medals in the junior races of 2007 and 2008. She was also the best European junior at the World Cross Country Championships those years.
Hitomi Niiya is a Japanese professional long-distance runner who competes in track, cross country running and marathon races. Niiya competed for Japan at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She is a two-time silver medallist at the Asian Athletics Championships and has represented Japan three times at the World Athletics Championships. She represents Team Toyota Industries in national competition.
Bilisuma Shugi Gelassa is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes internationally for Bahrain.
Tejitu Daba Chalchissa is an Ethiopian-born long-distance runner who competes internationally for Bahrain. She competes mainly in cross country and track running events. She won the gold medal over 5000 metres at the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships.
Joyce Chepkirui is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in road running events. She established herself as a half marathon runner, winning races in Granollers, Bogotá and Gothenburg. She set a best of 1:06:19 hours to win the 2014 Prague Half Marathon. She also competes in 10K road races and her personal best of 30:38 minutes makes her fifth fastest woman ever.
Kareema Saleh Jasim is a Kenyan-born Bahraini professional long-distance runner who competes in distances ranging from 3000 metres to the half marathon, as well as the steeplechase. She is the Bahraini national record holder in the 10,000 m and steeplechase.
Genzeb Shumi Regasa is an Ethiopian-born middle distance runner who competes internationally for Bahrain. She won the 1500 metres gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in 2011 and the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in 2012. Her personal bests are 2:01.18 minutes for the 800 metres and 4:05.16 minutes for the 1500 m.
Dejenee Regassa Mootumaa is formerly an Ethiopian-born long-distance runner who competed internationally for Bahrain. For a time, he was the reigning Asian champion in the 5000 metres.
Mika Yoshikawa is a Japanese middle- and long-distance runner. She is a five-time national champion over 1500 metres and won the 2012 Japanese title over 10,000 metres. She has represented Japan at the Olympics, World Championships in Athletics, the Asian Athletics Championships, and the Asian Games.
The 2013 Asian Athletics Championships were the 20th edition of the biennial athletics competition between Asian nations. It was held at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune, India between 3–7 July. Around 522 athletes from 42 nations competed at the event. It was the first time since 1989 that India had hosted the championships.

El Hassan El-Abbassi is a Moroccan-born long-distance runner who competes internationally for Bahrain. He was the gold medallist in the 10,000 metres at the 2014 Asian Games and the 2015 Asian Athletics Championships. He has a personal best of 27:25.02 minutes for that distance. El-Abbassi is currently suspended from competition due to an Athletics Integrity Unit investigation following the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Susan Krumins is a Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She was the 5000 metres bronze medalist at the 2014 European Athletics Championships and also won a 3000 metres bronze at the 2014 IAAF Continental Cup.
Irene Chepet Cheptai is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who competes in track and cross country running. She was the gold medallist at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships and led Kenya to the team title. Cheptai won the silver medal for the 10,000 metres at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Alice Aprot Nawowuna is a Kenyan long-distance runner. She was the gold medallist in the 10,000 metres at the 2015 African Games, where she also won the bronze medal in the 5000 metres. Aprot claimed gold and silver in the 10,000 m at the 2016 and 2018 African Championships in Athletics respectively. She earned the silver medal for the senior women's race at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships.
