Anna Isabel Poole,Lady Poole (born 11 August 1970) is a Senator of the College of Justice in Scotland. Prior to her appointment as Senator,she was a Judge of the UK Upper Tribunal,Administrative Appeals Chamber. [1] The Honourable Lady Poole was educated at Madras College,St Andrews,and at Somerville and Magdalen Colleges,Oxford.
The Honourable Lady Poole graduated with first class honours from Oxford University in Law in 1991 (BA Jurisprudence,MA). She completed a postgraduate Masters in 1993 (M.St,Oxon),and went on to qualify as a solicitor of England and Wales in London in 1996. After returning to Scotland,she became a Scottish solicitor in 1997 and an advocate in 1998. She was appointed as a Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Government in 2002,Second Standing Junior in 2009,and First Standing Junior in 2010. [2] In 2012,she took silk,becoming Queen's Counsel. She served as an ad hoc advocate depute in 2013.
In 2014 she was appointed as a part-time UK First tier Tribunal Judge in the Social Entitlement Chamber which she combined with practice at the bar. She was elevated to a salaried judge of the UK Upper Tribunal in 2018. [3] She was appointed to sit in the Upper Tribunal for Scotland in 2020. She became a Senator of the College of Justice in 2020. She served as chair to the Scottish COVID-19 Inquiry between 14 December 2021 and 27 October 2022 during its set up period. [4] She also chairs the Advisory Council of Messengers-at-Arms and Sheriff Officers.
Lady Poole previously worked at the universities of Dundee and Edinburgh as a research assistant and a tutor respectively. Between 2014 and 2024 she served as Chancellor first for the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles,and then for the Diocese of Edinburgh. [5] She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, [6] after completing a course in arbitration at the University of Aberdeen.
Lady Poole was formally installed as a Senator of the College of Justice at a ceremony in Parliament House on 10 January 2020. [7] She is a co-author of a book on judicial review with Sheriff Frances McCartney and Sheriff Lorna Drummond (A Practical Guide to Public Law Litigation in Scotland Drummond,McCartney and Poole,2019 [8] ) and is a contributor to Court of Session Practice edited by Lord Donald MacFadyen. [9]
The Court of Session is the highest national court of Scotland in civil cases. The court was established in 1532 to take on the judicial functions of the royal council. Its jurisdiction overlapped with other royal,state and church courts but as those were disbanded,the role of the Court of Session ascended. The Acts of Union establishing the United Kingdom provided that the court will "remain in all time coming".
Lynda Margaret Clark,Baroness Clark of Calton,known as Lady Clark of Calton,is a Scottish judge. She was formerly the Labour Member of Parliament for Edinburgh Pentlands. She was Advocate General for Scotland from the creation of that position in 1999 until 2006,whereupon she became a Judge of the Court of Session in Scotland.
Hazel Josephine Cosgrove,Lady Cosgrove,CBE,is a Scottish lawyer and judge who served as a Senator of the College of Justice from 1996 to 2006. She was the first woman appointed to the College of Justice.
Arthur Campbell Hamilton,Lord Hamilton,,is a Scottish judge and served as Lord Justice General and Lord President of the Court of Session from November 2005 until 8 June 2012,succeeding Lord Cullen.
The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland is an advisory non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government responsible for making recommendations on appointments to certain offices of the judiciary of Scotland. It was established in June 2002 on a non-statutory,ad hoc,basis by the Scottish Government,and was given statutory authority by the Judiciary and Courts (Scotland) Act 2008.

The Scottish Land Court is a Scottish court of law based in Edinburgh with subject-matter jurisdiction covering disputes between landlords and tenants relating to agricultural tenancies,and matters related to crofts and crofters. The Scottish Land Court is both a trial court and an appeal court;hearings at first-instance are often heard by a Divisional Court of one of the Agricultural Members advised by the Principal Clerk. Decisions of the Divisional Court can be appealed to the Full Court,which will consist of at least one legally qualified judicial member and the remaining Agricultural Member. Some cases are heard at first-instance by the Full Court,and these cases may be appealed to the Inner House of the Court of Session.

Paton is currently Scotland's longest-serving female judge and was the second woman ever appointed as a Senator of the College of Justice,after Lady Cosgrove.

The judiciary of Scotland are the judicial office holders who sit in the courts of Scotland and make decisions in both civil and criminal cases. Judges make sure that cases and verdicts are within the parameters set by Scots law,and they must hand down appropriate judgments and sentences. She is a former crown counsel of Ascension Island,in which role,she advised the government on criminal and civil matters.
