Annie Tagoe (born 4 June 1993) is a British track and field athlete who competes as a sprinter. [1]
Tagoe was born in Ghana and brought up in Willesden in north-west London from the age of six. Her mother is an NHS Nurse. She played for QPR Girls football team as a youngster. She was excluded from school 32 times before being introduced to the charity Track Academy, set up using money from Comic Relief. She became the England Under-17 100 metres champion, she attended Royal Central School of Speech and Drama at 18 years-old, and graduated after three years. She has also worked as a model but has spoken about racism she experienced that caused her to contemplate trying to bleach her skin lighter. [2] [3] [4]
In 2010, Tagoe worked with MP Dawn Butler and musician Chipmunk on a project to help young people associate with politics. [5]
Tagoe represented Britain at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore. [6] She won a bronze medal in the medley relay event. [7]
She won the Outstanding Achievement Award at the UK Athletics Awards in 2009. [8]
In 2011, she was selected for the Britain squad for the 2011 European Athletics U20 Championships in Tallinn, as part of the 4x100m relay squad with Jennie Batten, Mica Moore and Bianca Williams. [9]
Tagoe won a European Athletics U23 Championships silver medal for Britain in the 4x100m relay alongside team-mates Corinne Humphreys, Jodie Williams, and Rachel Johncock in Tampere, Finland in 2013. [10]
Tagoe suffered injuries that required surgery on both knees in 2014 and 2015 and prohibited her from running for a number of years. She also has arthritis in her ankle which can cause discomfort in cold conditions. [11]
Competing at the UK Athletics Championships in Manchester in July 2023, Tagoe was one of the fastest qualifiers for the final of the women’s 100m race, behind Dina Asher-Smith. [12] She was chosen to represent Great Britain at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August 2023. [13]
In April 2024, she was selected as part of the British team for the 2024 World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas. [14]
Christine Ijeoma Ohuruogu, MBE is a British former track and field athlete who specialised in the 400 metres, the event for which she is an Olympic, World and Commonwealth champion. The Olympic champion in 2008, and silver medalist in 2012, she is a double World Champion, having won the 400 m at the 2007 and 2013 World Championships. She has also won six World championship medals in the women's 4 × 400 m relay as part of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team and bronze Olympic medals in the women's 4 × 400 m relay at the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2016 Rio Games, her final Olympics. Ohuruogu shares with Merlene Ottey and Usain Bolt the record for medalling in most successive global championships – 9 – between the 2005 World Championships in Athletics and the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Victoria Barr is a British track and field athlete who competes in the 400 metres sprint. Her personal best for the event is 52.40 seconds. She is a frequent member of the British 4×400 m relay team and won a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships in 2010. She was a silver medallist in the relay for England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Asha Solette Philip is an English sprinter and former junior gymnast specialising in double mini-trampoline. She was the first British woman to achieve a global 100 metres title at any age-group, winning gold at the 2007 World Youth Championships aged 16. Following a serious knee injury in gymnastics in a championship in Quebec at 17, and a rehabilitation period of several years, she returned to athletics full-time in 2014, winning gold at the European Athletics Championships in the 4 x 100 metres relay for Great Britain, and bronze in the same event at the Commonwealth Games for England.
Jamile Samuel is a Dutch athlete sprinter, who specialises in the 100 and 200 metres. She won three bronze medals at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics, thus establishing herself as the third-fastest female runner under the age of 20 in the world. She won a gold medal with the Dutch women's 4 × 100 m relay team at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam.
Emily Diamond is a British track and field athlete, who competes in the 200 metres and 400 metres. Diamond came to prominence in her breakout season of 2016 when, following her first win at the British Championships over the 400 metres distance, she collected a gold medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2016 European Athletics Championships as part of the Great Britain team, followed by a bronze in the same discipline at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Zharnel Hughes is an Anguilla-born British sprinter who specialises in the 100 metres and 200 metres. Born and raised in the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla, he has competed internationally for Great Britain in the Olympic Games, World Athletics and European Athletics events, and for England at the Commonwealth Games, since 2015. A double Commonwealth Games, double European Championships gold medalist as part of the 4 x 100 metres relay, Hughes has twice been European champion individually; over 100 metres in 2018, and 200 metres in 2022. In 2023, he broke both British sprint records, before winning his first global individual medal, a bronze in the 100 metres at the 2023 World championships.
Desirèe Henry is a British sprinter who competes in the 100 metres and 200 metres. She won an Olympic silver medal in the women's 4 x 100 metres relay at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the bronze medal in the 4 x 100 metres relay at the 2016 Rio Games, and a silver medal in the 4 × 100 m relay at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London.
Geraldina Rachel Asher-Smith, OLY is a British sprinter internationally active since 2011. In 2019 she was the first British woman to win a World title in a sprint event.
Zac Shaw is a British Paralympic visually impaired sprinter who competes in the T12 classification. At the age of nine he became afflicted with stargardt disease. He made his first Great Britain squad for the IPC Athletics World Championships in 2015 . Shaw made the Great Britain squad for the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris after just missing out on both the 2016 Summer Paralympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Daryll Saskia Neita is a British sprinter. She won a silver medal in the 200 metres at the 2024 European Championships along with bronze in the 100 metres at the 2022 European Championships, 2022 Commonwealth Games and in the 60 metres at the 2023 European Indoor Championships. She has also won several medals as part of Great Britain 4 × 100 m relay teams, including an Olympic silver medal in 2024 and bronze medals in 2016 and 2021, World Championships silver medals in 2017 and 2019 and European gold in 2018.
Shannon Hylton is an English sprinter. She represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2017 World Championships. She narrowly missed qualifying for the semifinals.
Imani-Lara Lansiquot is an English sprinter who competes mainly in the 100 metres. She finished fourth in the 100 metres finals at both the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships and the 2017 European U23 Championships. In the 4 × 100 metres relay, she won a gold medal at the 2018 European Championships, silver at the 2019 World Championships, and bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Her 100 metres best of 10.99 secs, ranks her third on the UK all-time list.
Amy Hunt is a British sprinter who won double gold at the 2019 European Athletics U20 Championships in both the 200 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay. She holds the world record for the Women's Under-18 200 metres, set in June 2019 with a time of 22.42s.
