Anoia (Catalan pronunciation: [əˈnɔjə] ) is a comarca (county) in central Catalonia, Spain, with its capital at Igualada. It is mainly located in the Penedès region, with its northern section being in Central Catalonia.

Contents

The comarca of Anoia is irrigated by the Anoia River; the leading industry is the making of paper.

To the north are Solsonès and Bages, to the west, Baix Llobregat to the south Baix Penedès and Alt Camp, and to the east Conca de Barberà and Segarra.

Later it runs through the Comarca of Alt Penedès, where it feeds a reservoir in the nature reserve of Parc del Foix since 1928, which is highly important for the drinking water supply of the densely populated coastal plain between Barcelona and Tarragona. Then it goes through the Comarca of Garraf from north to the south where it ends into the Mediterranean Sea west of the village of Cubelles. This little delta became an important natural reserve and recreational area after the campground ″Camping Paradiso″ was removed in the late 1990s.

Penedès is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for wines in Catalonia, (Spain). Penedès DOP includes all of the Penedès region and municipalities of four other counties: Anoia, Alt Camp, Baix Llobregat and Tarragonès. The area is framed by the coastal hills of the Garraf Massif and the higher inland mountains which skirt the Central Depression.

Penedès is one of the eight regions (vegueries) defined by the Regional Plan of Catalonia. Located in south of Catalonia, it includes the comarques from historical Penedès region, along with the southern municipalities of Anoia. It had 497.764 inhabitants as of 2022. It was approved as a region in February 2017.
