Anquam Mahamoud is an American politician and member-elect to District 62B of the Minnesota House of Representativesrepresenting Phillips and Powderhorn in South Minneapolis. [2] Mahamoud is a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. [3]
Mahamoud was born in San Diego,California and moved with her family to Minneapolis in 1998. [4] She graduated with a B.S. in Psychology from Saint Catherine University in Saint Paul. Prior to her run for office,she worked as a substance treatment and mental health provider, [5] including as the COO of Twin Cities Health Services,an organization that had its license revoked for licensing violations prior to Mahamoud's tenure as COO. [6]
In February 2024,three-term representative Hodan Hassan (DFL) announced that she was not seeking re-election in 2024 for District 62B of the Minnesota House of Representatives. Soon after,Mahamoud announced her candidacy and sought the endorsement of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party. [7] She received the party's endorsement in a tight field of candidates vying for the seat [8] and the other candidates dropped out prior to candidate filing,leaving the seat without a primary election. [9] In the 2024 general election,Mahamoud won the seat,defeating Republican candidate Bob Sullentrop by nearly 75 percentage points. [10]

The Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) is a political party in the U.S. state of Minnesota affiliated with the national Democratic Party. The party was formed by a merger between the Minnesota Democratic Party and the Minnesota Farmer–Labor Party in 1944. The DFL is one of two state Democratic Party affiliates with a different name from that of the national party,the other is the neighboring North Dakota Democratic–Nonpartisan League Party.
The 2006 Minnesota gubernatorial election took place on November 7,2006. Incumbent Tim Pawlenty was endorsed by the state Republican convention on June 2,2006,while the state Democratic–Farmer–Labor convention endorsed Mike Hatch on June 10,2006. The party primaries took place on September 12,2006,with Hatch defeating DFL challengers Becky Lourey and Ole Savior and incumbent Pawlenty defeating Sue Jeffers. In the November 7 general election,Pawlenty received a plurality of the votes,defeating Hatch by a margin of 1%. As a result,this election was the closest race of the 2006 gubernatorial election cycle.
