Anthony Elms is an American curator, writer, and artist based in Philadelphia. In 2015, Elms was named Chief Curator at the ICA Philadelphia. [1]

Education

Elms received a BFA in painting from Michigan State University and an MFA from the University of Chicago. [2]

Curatorial and Art Practice

Elms spent over 15 years in Chicago, Illinois, working as an exhibition preparator, a freelance writer, and a curator; as well as making fine art. [3] [4] As of 2013, Elms continued to exhibit as an artist. [2] Elms was Assistant Director of Gallery 400 at the University of Illinois at Chicago for six years. [5] In 2011, Elms joined the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute of Contemporary Art as an associate curator. [1] At the ICA, Elms organized “White Petals Surround Your Yellow Heart” (2013), which included artists working with themes of adornment, such as Lynda Benglis, Karen Kilimnik, Zoe Leonard, Paulina Olowska, and Frances Stark. [4]

In 2014, Elms co-curated the 2014 Whitney Biennial, with Stuart Comer and Michelle Grabner at the Whitney Museum of American Art. [4] Each curator was given a floor. Elms worked with artist Zoe Leonard on her contribution to the Whitney Biennial, a room-sized camera obscura , which won her the $100,000 Bucksbaum Award, given to one artist in the show every Biennial since 2000. [1] The floor which Elms organized included works by Terry Adkins, Elijah Burgher, My Barbarian, Susan Howe, Charlemagne Palestine, Allan Sekula, and others. [4]

Elms worked as an associate producer for the 2011 PERFORMA visual art biennial. [6] [3]

Writing & Editing

Elms edits and is the curator of WhiteWalls, an alternative space for artists’ publication projects founded in the 1970s. [7] White Walls periodically publishes books and distributes them through the University of Chicago Press. [8] Elms’s writings have been published in various periodicals, including Afterall, ART PAPERS, Cakewalk, Art Asia Pacific, Modern Painters, and New Art Examiner. [7]

Jessica Jackson Hutchins is an American artist from Chicago, Illinois who is based in Portland, Oregon. Her practice consists of large scale ceramics, multi-media installations, assemblage, and paintings all of which utilize found objects such as old furniture, ceramics, worn out clothes, and newspaper clippings. She is most recognizable for her sloppy craft assemblages of furniture and ceramics. Her work was selected for the 2010: Whitney Biennial, featured in major art collections, and has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, in Iceland, the UK, and Germany.

Zoe Strauss is an American photographer and a nominee member of Magnum Photos. She uses Philadelphia as a primary setting and subject for her work. Curator Peter Barberie identifies her as a street photographer, like Walker Evans or Robert Frank, and has said "the woman and man on the street, yearning to be heard, are the basis of her art."

Michelle Grabner is an artist, curator, and critic based in Wisconsin. She is the Crown Family Professor of Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she has taught since 1996. She has curated several important exhibitions, including the 2014 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art along with Anthony Elms and Stuart Comer, and FRONT International, the 2016 Portland Biennial at the Oregon Contemporary, a triennial exhibition in Cleveland, Ohio in 2018. In 2014, Grabner was named one of the 100 most powerful women in art and in 2019, she was named a 2019 National Academy of Design's Academician, a lifetime honor. In 2021, Grabner was named a Guggenheim Fellow by The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Christina Ramberg was an American painter associated with the Chicago Imagists, a group of representational artists who attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1960s. The Imagists took their cues from Surrealism, Pop, and West Coast underground comic illustration, and were "enchanted with the abject status of sex in post-war America, particularly as writ on the female form." Ramberg is best known for her depictions of partial female bodies forced into submission by undergarments and imagined in odd, erotic predicaments.

Jenelle Porter is an American art curator and author of numerous exhibition catalogs and essays about contemporary art and craft. Amy Sadao is a contemporary art writer, juror, and lecturer who was director of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia from September 2012 to September 2019. She oversaw the ICA's fiftieth anniversary as well as exhibitions of Nicole Eisenman, Ruanne Abbas, Jayson Musson, Alex Da Corte, Barbara Kasten, among others. Sadao was executive director of Visual AIDS in New York City prior to her appointment to the ICA directorship. She has been known to engage diverse communities and to center art around the contemporary social and political issues across the globe.

Sidney Goodman was an American figurative painter and draftsman from Philadelphia, PA who explored the human form. Goodman received public notice in the early 1960s for his oil paintings, leading to his inclusion in the 1973 Whitney Biennial. In 1996, the Philadelphia Museum of Art presented a retrospective show of Goodman's paintings and drawings.

Meg Onli is an African-American art curator and writer. She is currently the Andrea B. Laporte Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her curatorial work primarily revolves around the black experience, language, and constructions of power and space. Her writing has been published in Art21, Daily Serving, and Art Papers. In September 2022, it was announced that Onli would co-curate the 2024 Whitney Biennial with Chrissie Iles.

Virgil Marti is an American visual artist recognized for his installations blending fine art, design, and decor from a range of styles and periods. Marti’s immersive sculptural environments, often evoking nature and the landscape, combine references from high culture with decorative, flamboyant, or psychedelic imagery, materials, and objects of personal significance.
