Gavin King, better known by his stage name Aphrodite, is a British jungle and drum and bass DJ/producer on the Urban Takeover label. [1] [2] Also known as A Zone or DJ Aphro, he contributed to and influenced the genre's styles and techniques. He was born in Aberystwyth, Wales, and moved to London with his family as a toddler. [2] He has studied computer science. [3] He was one half of breakbeat hardcore group Urban Shakedown (with Claudio Giussani) who scored a UK top 40 hit with "Some Justice". [4] The duo appeared in an article of Amiga Format magazine after using two Amiga 500 computers to help create the track. [5]

DJ Aphrodite is behind Aphrodite Recordings which was inspired by a club he ran in 1988 called 'Aphrodite'. [6] His debut album was a self-titled effort under V2 Recordings, released in 1999. [6] The follow-up was Aftershock which was again released under V2 Recordings on 24 June 2002.

Breakbeat hardcore is a music genre that spawned from the UK rave scene during the early 1990s. It combines four-on-the-floor rhythms with breakbeats usually sampled from hip hop. Emerging from breakbeat hardcore, the style is characterised by rapid breakbeats, heavily syncopated percussive loops, samples, and synthesised effects, combined with the deep basslines, melodies, and vocal samples found in dub, reggae and dancehall, as well as hip hop and funk. Many producers frequently sampled the "Amen break" or other breakbeats from funk and jazz recordings. Jungle was a direct precursor to the drum and bass genre which emerged in the mid-1990s.

OctaMED is a music tracker for the Amiga, written by Teijo Kinnunen. The first version, 1.12, was released in 1989 under the name MED, which stands for Music EDitor. In April 1990, version 2.00 was released with MIDI support as the main improvement. In 1991 the first version with the name OctaMED was released, so-called as it could replay eight independent channels on the Amiga's four-channel sound chip. UK garage, abbreviated as UKG, is a genre of electronic dance music which originated in England in the early to mid-1990s. The genre was most clearly inspired by garage house, but also incorporates elements from dance-pop, R&B, and jungle. It is defined by percussive, shuffled rhythms with syncopated hi-hats, cymbals, and snares, and may include either 4/4 house kick patterns or more irregular "2-step" rhythms. Garage tracks also commonly feature 'chopped up' and time-stretched or pitch-shifted vocal samples complementing the underlying rhythmic structure at a tempo usually around 130 BPM.
