Apostolic Prefecture of Xinjiang-Urumqi

The Apostolic Prefecture of Xinjiang-Urumqi is a pre-diocesan missionary Latin jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in north-western China's vast region Xinjiang, which is exempt, i.e. directly dependent on the Holy See and its missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, not part of any ecclesiastical province.

It borders on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tadjikistan (all three Ex-Soviet West Turkestan), Afghanistan, Pakistan/India-disputed Kashmir, Tibet, Han-China proper (notably the Archdiocese of Lanzhou) and (Outer) Mongolia.

Its episcopal see is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, in regional capital Ürümqi. No statistics are available. [1]

An apostolic prefect or prefect apostolic is a priest who heads what is known as an apostolic prefecture, a 'pre-diocesan' missionary jurisdiction where the Catholic Church is not yet sufficiently developed to have it made a diocese. Although it usually has an (embryonal) see, it is often not called after such city but rather after a natural or administrative geographical area.

Ehmetjan Qasim was the president of the Second East Turkestan Republic. He was a Uyghur political leader in East Turkistan, and also the vice chairman of the Xinjiang Provincial Coalition Government. Ehmetjan was born in Ghulja in 1914. He studied at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East, Moscow in 1936 and was a member of Communist Party of Soviet Union. Ehmetjan was described as "Stalin's man" and as a "communist-minded progressive". Qasim russified his surname to "Kasimov" and became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

The East Turkistan National Army, also known as the Ili National Army, was the army of the East Turkestan Republic (ETR) that originally consisted of six regiments: the Suidun Infantry Regiment, the Ghulja Regiment, the Kensai Regiment, the Ghulja Reserve Regiment, the Kazakh Cavalry Regiment, the Dungan Regiment, the Artillery Subdivision, the Sibo Subdivision, and the Mongol Subdivision. The last two subdivisions were later reformed to regiments. All regiments were armed with mostly German-made weapons that were provided by the Soviet Union on orders by Joseph Stalin. Its personnel was trained in the Soviet Union. Rebel aviation included 42 airplanes, which were captured in the Ghulja Kuomintang air base and repaired by Soviet military personnel.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lanzhou is a Latin Metropolitan Archdiocese of the Catholic church with an Ecclesiastical province, yet depends on the missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

Built in the late Qing dynasty, Urumqi Confucius Temple is the only well-preserved Qing dynasty style temple complex in Xinjiang, and is the only remaining Confucian temple in Xinjiang.
