A member of the right-wing National Liberation Movement (MLN) party, his authoritarian government was closely allied with the United States.

Arma Christi, or the Instruments of the Passion, are the objects associated with the Passion of Jesus Christ in Christian symbolism and art. They are seen as arms in the sense of heraldry, and also as the weapons Christ used to achieve his conquest over Satan. There is a group, at a maximum of about 20 items, which are frequently used in Christian art, especially in the Late Middle Ages. Arma 2 is a military simulation video game developed and published by Bohemia Interactive for Microsoft Windows. It is the sequel to Arma: Armed Assault, and the predecessor to Arma 3. An antimonumenta was installed in the Plaza de Armas, in Guadalajara, Jalisco on 25 November 2020, the date commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, during the annual march of women protesting against gender violence. The sculpture is symbolically named Antimonumenta and it was inspired by the anti-monument of the same name placed in Mexico City a year prior.
