Arne Wam (born 14 April 1952) is a Norwegian journalist and civil servant, who has had several leading positions in the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and the Norwegian State Railways (NSB).

Early and personal life

He was born in Drammen, and was educated at Volda University College. [1] He is married to Sissel Rønbeck. [2]

Career

During the 1980s, Wam worked as a negotiator between the Blitz group and the Oslo Municipality, resulting in the establishment of the Blitz House. During this period, Wam joined the Norwegian Labour Party and later became chair of Skøyen Labour Party. In 1986, Wam became anchor in Ungdommens Radioavis on NRK. Two years later, he led the Men's Role Committee, which criticized Norwegian women and equality policies.

On 28 June 1989, Wam leaked a news story about the connection between the Labour Party and the Norwegian Police Security Service. In 1990, Wam became leader of NRK Østlandssendingen. Five years later, he became the advisor for NRK's director-general Einar Førde. In 1996, he became director of NRK Aktivum, a limited company which operate an online store. Two years later, he quit that job in protest against lack of prioritizing on the concept, and received a golden parachute worth 500,000 Norwegian krone. [2]

In 1999, Wam was hired as director for regional trains in NSB, and a year later became acting CEO of NSB. [2] He replaced Randi Flesland, who had served as acting CEO for a short time after Osmund Ueland was fired. [3] [4] Wam stated that his inspiration for the company came from Telenor and Norway Post. Among his projects were removing 49 out of 300 employees at Lodalen without firing a single person; removing shopping trolleys from the trains and replacing them with vending machines; and welding the seats in older, bi-directional trains so the seats would no longer always face forward. [2] In 2001, Wam was replaced by Einar Enger as CEO of NSB. [5] In 2003 Wam became communications director for NSB. [1]

NSB Class 73 is a class of 22 electric multiple units built by Adtranz for the Norwegian State Railways. The four-car trains were modifications of Class 71, which was again based on the Swedish X2. The A-series consists of 16 intercity trains; they were delivered in 1999 and 2000 and are used on the Bergen, Dovre and Sørland Lines. The intercity service was branded as Signatur until 2003. The B-series consists of six regional trains delivered in 2002 and used on the Østfold Line. The regional trains were originally part of the Agenda concept. The trains have a power output of 2,646 kilowatts (3,548 hp) and a maximum speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). They have an overall length of 108 meters (354 ft) and have a capacity for 208 seated passengers in the A-series and 250 in the B-series. The trains have a tilting mechanism allowing for faster travel through curves.

The Kragerø Line was a 27-kilometer (17 mi) long railway line between Neslandsvatn and Kragerø in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It was opened on 2 December 1927 as part of the Sørlandet Line. From 10 November 1935, the Sørlandet Line was extended from Neslandsvatn to Arendal, and the Kragerø Line became a branch. It was mostly served with feeder trains, although a through train to Oslo was kept until the 1970s. Falling ridership caused the line to become closed from 1 December 1989, along with many other branch lines. Part of the line remains, although other parts have been demolished.

Kjell Borgen was a Norwegian politician for the Labour Party. He served as Minister of Transport and Communications from 1986 to 1988, Minister of Local Government from 1988 to 1989 and again from 1990 to 1992. He served as County Governor of Hedmark from 1993 until his death.

Vy Gjøvikbanen AS is a Norwegian railway company that operates the passenger train service on the Gjøvik Line. A subsidiary of the state-owned Vy, it operates a fleet of nine Class 69g three-car electric multiple units. NSB Gjøvikbanen provides two different services: the Skøyen – Oslo S – Jaren service is part of the Oslo Commuter Rail; while Oslo S – Gjøvik is a regional service, with only limited stops on the route until Grua. Departures are each 40 minutes, with every third train running to Gjøvik.

Norsk Spisevognselskap A/S, often abbreviated NSS or shortened to Spisevognselskapet, was a Norwegian state enterprise which operated restaurant carriages on Norwegian trains and restaurants at railway stations and railway hotels. The company was established in December 1918, and started a catering service in 1919. Originally owned by the Norwegian Trunk Railway, it was acquired by the state in 1926. Meals served in the restaurant carriages were relatively expensive, although they were available to all passengers. In the 1950s, the company began using serving trolleys on trains.

The Norwegian State Railways was a state-owned railway company that operated most of the railway network in Norway. The government agency/directorate was created in 1883 to oversee the construction and operation of all state-owned railways in Norway. On 1 December 1996, it was demerged to create the infrastructure operator Norwegian National Rail Administration, the train operator Norwegian State Railways and the Norwegian Railway Inspectorate. The name was taken by the train operator, although the infrastructure operator remained a government agency and is the legal successor.
