Art Connoisseur (foaled 20 March 2006) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for his upset victory in the 2009 edition of the Golden Jubilee Stakes. He showed high-class form as a two-year-old in 2008, winning his first three races including the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and then finishing second in a strong renewal of the Phoenix Stakes. In 2009 he was well-beaten on his seasonal debut before defeating a top-class international field in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at odds of 20/1. He failed to reproduce anything approaching his Ascot form in four subsequent starts and was retired from racing at the end of the year. He has had little success as a breeding stallion.

Background

Art Connoisseur is a bay horse with a small white star bred in Ireland by Denis McDonnell. He was the best horse sired by Lucky Story. [2] a top-class racehorse who won the Richmond Stakes and the Champagne Stakes as well as finishing second in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. [3] Art Connoisseur's dam Withorwithouyou showed modest ability as a racehorse, winning one minor race at Warwick Racecourse in twelve starts. [4] She was a granddaughter of Morning Has Broken, the female-line ancestor of Balanchine and West Wind (Prix de Diane). [5]

In October, the yearling was consigned by Parkway Farm to the Tattersalls sales and was bought for 55,000 guineas by the bloodstock agents Kern, Lillingston Associates. [6] Art Connoisseur entered the ownership of Richard Green and was sent into training with Michael Bell at Newmarket, Suffolk.

Racing career

2008: two-year-old season

Art Connoisseur was ridden in all of his races as a two-year-old by Jamie Spencer. On his racecourse debut he started 100/30 second favourite for a five furlong maiden race at Leicester Racecourse on 3 April. After racing in second place he took the lead approaching the final furlong and went clear of his five rivals to win by three and a quarter lengths. [7] Two weeks later the colt started 11/10 favourite for a minor race over the same distance at Newmarket Racecourse. He took the lead a furlong out and won by two and a quarter lengths from Servoca and ten others, although, as on his debut, he hung to the right in the closing stages. [8]

On 17 June Art Connoisseur was moved up in class and distance for the Group Two Coventry Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot. The Mick Channon-trained Orizaba ahead of Himalya with Art Connoisseur the 8/1 third choice in an eighteen-runner field. After being restrained towards the rear of the field he made rapid progress in the last quarter mile and took the lead inside the final furlong. Despite hanging right yet again he was "soon in full control" and won by two and a quarter lengths and a short head from Intense Focus and Lord Shanakill (later to win the Prix Jean Prat). [9]

In July he was sent to Ireland for the Group One Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh and started favourite against four Irish-trained runners. He stayed on from the rear of the field but sustained his first defeat as he was beaten into second place by Mastercraftsman with Bushranger (later to win the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes) in third. In August the colt started second favourite for the rescheduled Gimcrack Stakes which was run at Newbury Racecourse after the York meeting was abandoned. He tracked the leaders before fading in the last quarter mile and finished eighth of the twelve runners behind Shaweel. He sustained a minor crack to his cannon bone in the race and missed the rest of the season. [10]

2009: three-year-old season

On his three-year-old debut, Art Connoisseur was assigned top weight of 131 pounds in the European Free Handicap over seven furlongs at Newmarket on 15 April. Ridden by Spencer he pulled hard in the early stages but after struggling to obtain a clear run he was eased down in the closing stages and finished seventh behind Ouqba. [11] In May Art Connoisseur's training was interrupted by a minor leg injury. His exercise over the next month involved two weeks of swimming followed by two weeks of canters before returning to full training in June. [12]

Tom Queally took over from the suspended Jamie Spencer when Art Connoisseur was matched against older horses for the first time and started a 20/1 outsider for the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on 20 June. The race attracted a strong international challenge including the favourite J J the Jet Plane (Al Quoz Sprint) from South Africa, Sacred Kingdom from Hong Kong, Cannonball from the United States, Ialysos from Greece, Bushranger from Ireland and the former American sprinter Diabolical (Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap), now representing Godolphin. The British challengers included Kingsgate Native, King's Apostle (Diadem Stakes) and Regal Parade (Ayr Gold Cup). Queally restrained his mount as J J the Jet Plane set the pace before giving way to the outsider Lesson In Humility two furlongs out. Art Connoisseur was switched left to race up the stands-side rail, overtook Lesson In Humility a furlong from the finish and held off the late challenge of Cannonball to win by a length. [13] After the race Michael Bell said "It's such a thrill because we turned down telephone numbers for him and now it looks the right decision. I was slightly regretting it over the winter." [12] Queally commented "It's great to be on board and the horse did it very well. I just gave him time, got a split and it was do or die then up the rails. He idles in his work and only does as much as he has to, but I gave him a couple of cracks and he knuckled down great". [10]

The rest of Art Connoisseur's racing career was a complete disappointment: in four races he failed to finish in the first ten and never finished within nine lengths of the winner. He finished twelfth of thirteen behind Fleeting Spirit in the July Cup, fifteenth behind Borderlescott in the Nunthorpe Stakes (when his saddle slipped) [14] and twelfth behind Regal Parade in the Haydock Sprint Cup. On his final appearance, he finished eleventh of the fourteen runners behind Sayif in the Diadem Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on 27 September. [15]

Stud career

Art Connoisseur was retired from racing at the end of his three-year-old season and became a breeding stallion at the Irish National Stud with an initial stud fee of €7,000. [16] In December 2014 the eight-year-old stallion was auctioned at Tattersalls and bought for 40,000 guineas by Oliver St Lawrence Bloodstock. [17] He has several minor winners but no top-class performers: the best of his offspring has probably been Suzi's Connoisseur, who won a Listed race in Germany. [18]

Lethal Force is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2011 he showed potential but failed to win in four races. In the following year he recorded his first major success when winning the Hungerford Stakes. Tom Queally Irish jockey

Thomas P. Queally is a Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. He is best known as the regular jockey of Frankel. He was first jockey to leading trainer Sir Henry Cecil. Queally is best known for his association with the Cecil-trained pair Midday and Frankel.

Red Clubs was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won the Group Two Coventry Stakes as a two-year-old, two Group Three races at three and the Group One Haydock Sprint Cup at four. The last named win was largely responsible for Red Clubs being named European Champion Sprinter at the 2007 Cartier Racing Awards. He was noted for the toughness and consistency he displayed in a twenty-five race career which lasted from 2005 to 2007. He died of an injury sustained while standing as a stallion in Ireland in 2011.

Araafa was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won three of his ten races between July 2005 and November 2006 and was the top-rated British-trained colt of his generation. As a two-year-old he won on his debut and was placed in both the Acomb Stakes and the Horris Hill Stakes. In the following spring he finished fourth to George Washington in the 2000 Guineas before reversing the form to win the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He followed up with a win in the St James's Palace Stakes and later finished second to George Washington in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He was then retired to stud but was not a success as a breeding stallion. He died in 2012 at the age of nine.

Lake Coniston was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After being sold as a yearling for 22,000 guineas he was sent to be trained in England by Geoff Lewis. Unraced as a juvenile, he established himself as a top-class sprinter as a three-year-old with wins in the Hackwood Stakes, Prix de Meautry and Diadem Stakes. He was even better at four, winning the Abernant Stakes, Duke of York Stakes and July Cup. His performance in the last-named race saw him regarded as one of the best British sprinters of modern times. He stood as a breeding stallion in Ireland, England, Australia, New Zealand, Italy and South Africa with limited success. He died in South Africa in 2014 at the age of 23.

Kingsgate Native is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He was a precocious juvenile sprinter, winning the Nunthorpe Stakes against older horses as well as finishing second in the Prix de l'Abbaye, Windsor Castle Stakes and Molecomb Stakes. He was equally successful in 2008, winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot before being retired to become a breeding stallion.

Airwave is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Competing almost exclusively in sprints she won six of her twenty-two starts in a racing career which lasted from July 2002 until June 2005. She was one of the fastest juveniles of her generation in 2002 when she won the Firth of Clyde Stakes and then recorded an upset victory over Russian Rhythm in the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she won the Temple Stakes and was placed in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, July Cup and Haydock Sprint Cup. She was not as good as a four-year-old, but did win the Land O'Burns Fillies' Stakes and finished second in the Diadem Stakes. She was sold to Irish interests and ran three times as a five-year-old, winning the Ridgewood Pearl Stakes before being retired to begin a second career as a broodmare.

Dutch Art is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was rated the best British two-year-old of 2006, when he was unbeaten in four races including the Norfolk Stakes, Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes. In the following year he failed to win but finished second in the July Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest and third in the 2000 Guineas. Since retiring to stud in 2008 he has had considerable success as a breeding stallion.

Tout Seul is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He is best known for his performances as a two-year-old in 2002 when he won five of his seven races including the Shergar Cup Juvenile, Tattersalls Breeders Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes, as well as finishing second in the Two-Year-Old Trophy. In the following year he failed to win in six races but finished fourth in the 2000 Guineas and third in the Irish 2000 Guineas. In 2004 he recorded his first victory in eighteen months when he won the Leicestershire Stakes but was well beaten in his remaining races and was retired at the end of the year.

Harbour Law British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Harbour Law is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. Unraced as a two-year-old he showed steady improvement in 2016, winning two minor races and finishing second in the Queen's Vase before recording a 22/1 upset victory in the St Leger. In the following year he finished third in the Ascot Gold Cup but his racing career was ended by injury shortly afterwards.

Goodricke is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. A specialist sprinter who excelled over six and seven furlongs and recorded his biggest win in the 2005 William Hill Sprint Cup. He showed some promise as a two-year-old, winning two minor races, but missed the second half of the year after running poorly in the Coventry Stakes. In the following year he competed in handicaps and minor stakes before emerging as a top class performer with a second place in the Prix Maurice de Gheest followed by his win in the Spring Cup. He remained in training as a four-year-old but ran only twice and failed to recover his best form. He was retired to stud but has had very little success as a breeding stallion.

Iktamal was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Owned throughout his racing career by Maktoum Al Maktoum and trained in all but one of his races by Ed Dunlop he was a sprinter who raced almost exclusively over distance of six and seven furlongs. In his first two seasons he showed useful but unremarkable form, winning two minor races and a relatively valuable handicap race as a three-year-old in 1995. In the following year he was highly tried, running eleven times and emerging as a top-class performer. He was disqualified after finishing first in the Chipchase Stakes but went on to win the Beeswing Stakes before recording his biggest success in the Group One Haydock Park Sprint Cup. In the same year he finished fourth in both the July Cup and the Prix Maurice de Gheest as well as running sixth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. After his retirement from racing he stood as a breeding stallion in South Africa.

Fayr Jag was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. Trained throughout his racing career in Yorkshire by Tim Easterby he was a durable sprinter who ran 64 times and won eleven races in seven seasons between 2001 and 2007. After winning a minor race in each of his first two seasons he made his first major impact as a four-year-old by winning two handicap races before dead-heating for first place in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot. Later that year he was moved up in class and added victories in the Hopeful Stakes and the Ridgewood Pearl Stakes. In the following year he recorded his biggest win when he defeated a top-class field to win the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes. He was then without a win for two years before returning to form to win the Chipchase Stakes and the Hackwood Stakes in 2006. Fayr Jag failed to win in 2007 and died after injuring himself in the starting stalls on what was intended to be his first race of 2008.

Bushranger is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a two-year-old in 2008 when he won four of his seven races including the Anglesey Stakes in Ireland, the Prix Morny in France and the Middle Park Stakes in England as well as finishing second in the Phoenix Stakes. He was rated the second-best juvenile of the year in Europe. Bushranger failed to recapture his form in three starts as a three-year-old and was retired to stud at the end of 2009. He has had some success as a sire of winners.

Sans Frontieres is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In his first two seasons he showed promise but was restricted to only three races in total owing to injuries. As a four-year-old in 2010 he emerged as a top-class performer over middle and long distances, winning the Princess of Wales's Stakes and Geoffrey Freer Stakes in England and then recording his biggest victory in his final race when he took the Irish St. Leger at the Curragh. Leg injuries kept him off the course for the next two years before he was retired to become a breeding stallion.

Poets Word Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Poet's Word is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and breeding stallion. He showed useful but unremarkable form in his first two seasons before developing into a high-class performer at the age of four when he won the Glorious Stakes as well as finishing second in both the Irish Champion Stakes and the Champion Stakes. He continued his progress as a five-year-old in 2018, winning the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, Prince of Wales's Stakes and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Where Or When was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed good form as a two-year-old in 2001, winning three races including the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes as well as finishing fourth in the Dewhurst Stakes and the Solario Stakes. In the following year he ran unplaced in the 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby before recording his first win almot ten months when he took the Thoroughbred Stakes. On his final run of the year he recorded his biggest victory when he upset the odds-on favourite Hawk Wing in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. In 2003 he failed to win but was placed in the Lockinge Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes. After his retirement from racing he had modest success as a breeding stallion.

Blue Point (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Blue Point, is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the best British-trained two-year-olds of 2016 when he won the Gimcrack Stakes and was placed in the Richmond Stakes, Middle Park Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes. In the following year he developed into a high class sprint horse, taking the Pavilion Stakes and Bengough Stakes as well as running third in the Commonwealth Cup. As a four-year-old in 2018 he recorded his first Group 1 success in the King's Stand Stakes. In 2019 he won three races in Dubai including the Al Quoz Sprint before recording a double at Royal Ascot, taking the King's Stand Stakes for the second time and winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Decorated Knight is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After finishing second in his only start as a two-year-old he won two minor races in the following year as well as running third in the Group 2 Darley Stakes. He improved as a four-year-old in 2016 winning the Festival Stakes and the Meld Stakes as well as finishing a close second in the Diomed Stakes. He emerged as performer of the highest class in 2017 when he took the Winter Derby Trial before recording Group 1 wins in the Jebel Hatta, Tattersalls Gold Cup and Irish Champion Stakes.

Regal Parade, is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. In a track career which lasted from January 2007 until October 2016 he contested 104 races, winning 13 times and being placed on 27 occasions. He won three minor races as a three-year-old in 2007 and improved in the following year to win the Buckingham Palace Stakes and the Ayr Gold Cup. In the next two years he showed top class form over sprint distances, taking the City Plate and Haydock Sprint Cup in 2009 and the Hackwood Stakes and Prix Maurice de Gheest in 2010. He remained in training until the age of twelve but never returned to the highest class and won only three minor races before being retired from racing,
