Ashlyn Puerta (born February 27, 2007) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder or forward for USL Super League club Sporting JAX. She played college soccer for the Florida State Seminoles for one season.
Puerta grew up in San Diego, California, and began playing soccer at an early age. [1] In 2022, she led Albion SC to the Girls Academy (GA) national championship and was named the GA's most valuable player. [1]
In 2023, she played regularly for Albion's MLS Next boys' side. [1] She also trained at age 15 with National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) club NJ/NY Gotham FC, who offered her professional terms, and European clubs including Benfica and Real Madrid, but decided not to skip college. [2] [3]
She was homeschooled through her childhood and graduated early to begin college at age 17. Previously ranked by TopDrawerSoccer as the No. 19 recruit of the 2025 class, she was then the No. 62 recruit of the 2024 class, part of Florida State's top-ranked incoming class. [1] [4]
Puerta played in every game for the Florida State Seminoles as a freshman in 2024, scoring 4 goals with 5 assists in 21 games (9 starts). [2] She was named the fifth-best freshman in TopDrawerSoccer's midseason rankings. [5] She helped Florida State win their fifth consecutive ACC tournament and earn a one seed in the NCAA tournament, where they lost in the second round on penalties. [6] [7]
After spending time with the club’s USL W League squad, on May 21, 2025, USL Super League expansion club Sporting JAX announced that it had signed Puerta and fellow W League teammate Georgia Brown to their first professional contracts, making them the club’s first two signings. [8] She made her professional debut on August 23, playing the entirety of Sporting's inaugural game, a 3–1 loss to DC Power FC. [9] The following week, she scored her first professional goals four minutes apart in the club's first win, a 3–2 victory over the Tampa Bay Sun, scoring from a penalty and a tight-angled shot after a corner kick. [10]
On September 28, she scored her first professional hat trick, with all three goals in the first half, as Sporting won 4–3 over the Carolina Ascent, making Puerta the youngest female player to record a hat trick in US professional leagues. [11] [12]
Her strong performances led to her being crowned the USL Super League Player of the Month for September. [13] The following month, Puerta was named to the USL Super League Team of the Month again for her strong performances in October. She was selected as a midfielder, after being recognized as a forward the previous month. [14]
Puerta helped the United States under-15 team win the 2022 CONCACAF Girls' U-15 Championship, scoring five goals with three assists in five games. [15] [16] She trained with the under-16, under-17, and under-18 teams over the following years. [17] [18] She made her under-20 debut at the 2025 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship in Costa Rica, where the United States qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. [19]
In October 2025, Puerta was called up to the United States women's national under-20 soccer team for a training camp in Kansas City, Missouri, from October 22 to 30. The camp, the first under newly appointed U-20 head coach Vicky Jepson, was intended to prepare the team for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland, for which the United States had already qualified. Upon receiving the call-up, Puerta expressed gratitude for the opportunity and gave “all glory to God,” describing it as an honor to represent her country. The camp also provided a chance for U-20 players to interact with members of the senior United States women's national soccer team ahead of their friendly against New Zealand. [20]
