Ashutosh Sharma (born 1961) is an Institute Chair Professor and C V Seshadri Chair Professor at the Department of chemical engineering of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He is the founding Coordinator of DST Thematic Unit of Excellence on Soft Nanofabrication and Chairman of Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Kanpur. [1] He is best known for his pioneering research work in the areas of colloids, thin film, interfaces, adhesion, patterning and in the fabrication and application of self-assembled nano-structures. Early life

Ashutosh Sharma got his B.Tech degree in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), India in 1982. Sharma graduated with master's degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1984 and three years later obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University at Buffalo, where he worked with Prof Eli Ruckenstein. [2]

Career

He was a member of the editorial board of Chemical Engineering Science from 2007 to 2010. Prior to it, he served on the editorial board of the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science (2000-2002) and Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering (2006-2008). Then, from 2011 to 2013, he was in the editorial board of Nanomaterials and Energy journal. From 2012 to 2014, he served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Micro - and Nano-Manufacturing . From 2013 to date, he has been serving as an Associate Editor of ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces journal. [6]

He was appointed as the Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India on 9 January 2015. [7]

Honours and awards

He is an elected fellow of prestigious societies such as the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, Indian National Science Academy, Indian National Academy of Engineering, Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India. [8] In 2002, he received Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award in engineering sciences for his "original pioneering contribution to the understanding of the behaviour of thin films and other highly confined nanoscale systems". [9] In the next year, he was awarded Herdillia Award by the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. Again, in 2007, he was awarded Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. [10] And in the year of 2010, Infosys Science Foundation have awarded him with Infosys Prize in Engineering and Computer Science for his "scholarly scientific contributions in the broad areas of nanoscale surface pattern evolution, instability, and the dynamics of thin liquid and solid films and soft matter.". [11]

He is also a recipient of the 2008 TWAS Prize [12] and in 2017 of the H K Firodia award for his pioneering work on colloids, film interfaces, adhesion etc. [13]

Manindra Agrawal

Manindra Agrawal is a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Deputy Director at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He was also the recipient of the first Infosys Prize for Mathematics and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Mathematical Sciences in 2003. He has been honored with Padma Shri in 2013.

Kalyanmoy Deb is an Indian computer scientist. Since 2013, Deb has held the Herman E. & Ruth J. Koenig Endowed Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computing Engineering at Michigan State University, which was established in 2001. Deb is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University. Prior to this position, Deb held the positions of Deva Raj Endowed Chair and Gurmukh and Veena Mehta Endowed Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India.

Vinod K. Singh

Vinod K. Singh was born on 9 September 1959, in Kshatriya family in Anantpur, a village in district Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. He is a Rahul and Namita Gautam Chair Professor of Chemistry at IIT Kanpur. Singh's major research contribution is in an area of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, more specifically, asymmetric synthesis. He has developed several new chiral ligands/catalysts for enantioselective reactions. One of the chiral catalysts developed in his laboratory, called "Singh's Catalyst", is an efficient chiral organocatalyst for enantioselective aldol reaction in aqueous medium. He has accomplished total synthesis of several bioactive natural products. His work is documented in more than 160 research publications. Furthermore, Professor Singh has guided 35 PhD students and currently has more than 12 students and postdoctoral fellows working with him.

K. VijayRaghavan

Dr. Krishnaswamy VijayRaghavan FRS is an emeritus professor and former director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences. On 26 March 2018 the Government of India appointed him as the principal scientific adviser to succeed Dr. R Chidamabaram. In 2012 he was elected a fellow of The Royal Society and in April 2014 he was elected as a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. He was conferred the Padma Shri on 26 January 2013 and is also a recipient of the Infosys Prize in the life sciences category in 2009.

Ayyappanpillai Ajayagosh is an organic chemist, academic and the director of the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology. He is known for his studies on supramolecular assemblies and light induced sensor systems and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. the National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences as well as The World Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Chemical Sciences in 2007. He received the TWAS Prize of The World Academy of Sciences in 2013.

Valipe Ramgopal Rao is the director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He was a P.K.Kelkar Chair Professor in Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and is now also the director at IIT Delhi. Ramgopal Rao has more than 475 publications in various journals, and 47 patents in the areas of Electron devices and Nanoelectronics. Ramgopal Rao was the first elected chairman for the Indian Section of the American Nano Society. He is also the recipient of multiple prizes including the Swarnajayanti Fellowship Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Infosys Prize, Techno-Visionary award from the Indian Semiconductor Association in 2020, the IBM faculty award in 2007 and the IEEE EDS Education award in 2020 besides many others. Ajay K. Sood

Ajay Kumar Sood is an Indian physicist, researcher and holder of 2 US and 5 Indian patents, known for his pioneering research findings on graphene and nanotechnology. He is a Distinguished Honorary Professor of Physics at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The Government of India honoured him in 2013, with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of science and technology. Sood was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2015. He has been on the Physical Sciences jury for the Infosys Prize from 2019.

Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay is an Indian computer scientist specializing in computational biology. A professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, she is a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize winner in Engineering Science for 2010 and an Infosys Prize 2017 laureate in the Engineering and Computer Science category. Her research is mainly in the areas of evolutionary computation, pattern recognition, machine learning and bioinformatics. Since 1 August 2015, she has been the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, and she would oversee the functioning of all five centres of Indian Statistical Institute located at Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, and Tezpur besides several other Statistical Quality Control & Operation Research Units spread across India. She is the first woman Director of the Indian Statistical Institute. Currently she is on the Prime Ministers' Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council.

Murali Sastry is an Indian material chemist, nanomaterial scientist and the chief executive officer of IITB-Monash Research Academy. He is a former chief scientist and Tata Chemicals and a former senior scientist at National Chemical Laboratory. He is known for his studies on surfaces, films and materials chemistry and is an elected fellow of Maharashtra Academy of Sciences and the Indian Academy of Sciences The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2002, for his contributions to chemical sciences.

Amalendu Chandra is an Indian theoretical physical chemist, a professor and the head of the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is known for his microscopic theories and simulations on liquids, interface and clusters. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. Sandeep Verma is an Indian bioorganic chemist and chemical biologist, and a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK). At IITK, he heads Sandeep Verma's Research Group in the areas of ordered peptide assemblies, metal-mediated nanoscale systems, programmable soft matter for neuronal regeneration, novel antimicrobials, and small molecule-stem cell modulation. Avinash Kumar Agarwal is an Indian mechanical engineer, tribologist and a professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is known for his studies on internal combustion engines, Emissions, alternate fuels and CNG engines and is an elected fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (2013), Society of Automotive Engineers, US (2012), National Academy of Science, Allahabad (2018), Royal Society of Chemistry, UK (2018), International Society for Energy, Environment and Sustainability (2016), and Indian National Academy of Engineering (2015). The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 2016. Agarwal has recently been bestowed with Prestigious J C Bose Fellowship of Science and Engineering Research Board. Government of India. Sudhir K. Jain is a civil engineer and professor at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. He is currently serving his third term as the director of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. He has been carrying out intensive resrearch and development in the fields of Seismic Design Codes, Dynamic of Buildings and Post Earthquake Studies. Beside these, Prof. Jain has actively participated in teaching, research activities and development in Earthquake Engineering focused on developing countries. He is an elected fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering and a member of U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He has served on the Engineering and Computer Science jury for the Infosys Prize from 2019. He has also served as the president of International Association of Earthquake engineering (IAEE) from 2014 to 2018.
