Askew's Foods is a Canadian family-owned grocery chain of supermarkets. The company is based in the Okanagan, British Columbia and sells locally grown and harvested products. [1]

History

In 1929 the chain was founded by RB (Dick) Askew who incorporated E.A. Palmer and Co ltd. which merged with the family business. The butcher shop locations in Revelstoke and Salmon Arm were leased, and the Salmon Arm was destroyed in fire. By 1934, the company moved to Alexander Avenue, and competitively renamed to Salmon Arm Meat and Produce Co. [2]

The company appeared to flourish during the Depression and Second World War, as transportation became easier; shopping by mail, peddling meats everywhere. [2] Dick and Mary Askew developed a recipe for smoked ham and bacon at this time, the Kurosweet brand, and eventually frozen food lockers were available for rent to the public. The eldest son, Lloyd, managed a Vernon location in contrast to the Kamloops one, managed by Dick, who died in 1951.

The death of Dick Askew spawned a range of closures, and only Salmon Arm and Kamloops remained. The family split separate ways, and only Lloyd Askew remained to manage the small meat counter. By the mid-60s, Lloyd coordinated with the supplier, Malkins, and the company moved to Lakeshore Drive where it remains to this day. The place initially had 8,000 sq. feet but expanded to the ultimate 16,500 sq. ft.

The Armstrong location opened in 1975, by Brian Hoshizaki, to similar success. Lloyd, however, would prove to decline in health by the early-1990s, and it became necessary for his daughter Karen, who returned in 1988, to take over- she would become general manager in 2007. Lloyd soon passed away and in 1997 the family moved to Sicamous and teamed with Ron Daniel which kept the company alive.

In 2010, a location in Uptown Salmon Arm began and it opened in July 2012. [3] And Enderby outlet opened recently in 2023. [4]
