Associate deputy attorney general is a position in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General in the United States Department of Justice. The number of positions varies widely depending on the staffing discretion of the deputy attorney general, but in 2017, there were five such positions, [1] all of whom served as advisors to the deputy attorney general. [1] [2] [3] There is also a separate principal associate deputy attorney general, who is the principal advisor to the deputy attorney general, and to whom all associate deputy attorneys general report. [4] The associate deputy attorney general positions are filled by Senior Executive Service (SES) career attorneys, by SES political appointees, or by non-SES career attorneys serving on detail assignments from elsewhere in the department. The Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) is an office in the United States Department of Justice that supports the attorney general in their role as legal adviser to the president and all executive branch agencies. It drafts legal opinions of the attorney general and provides its own written opinions and other advice in response to requests from the counsel to the president, the various agencies of the executive branch, and other components of the Department of Justice. The office reviews and comments on the constitutionality of pending legislation. The office reviews any executive orders and substantive proclamations for legality if the president proposes them. All proposed orders of the attorney general and regulations that require the attorney general's approval are reviewed. It also performs a variety of special assignments referred by the attorney general or the deputy attorney general.

Brinkmann is an American lawyer who served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the United States Department of Justice, heading up the appellate staff in the DOJ's Civil Division during the administration of President Barack Obama. She also served as Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States from 1993 through 2001. Brinkmann has argued 25 cases before the United States Supreme Court both in that role and in her later role as a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of the firm Morrison & Foerster. Currently, Brinkmann is a partner at the Covington & Burling law firm in Washington, D.C.

Mark J. Lesko is an American politician and attorney who served as the acting Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division at the United States Justice Department. Prior to that, from January 20, 2021, he was named as acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. In addition to his career as a prosecutor in the United States Department of Justice, Lesko served as town supervisor of Brookhaven, New York.

He previously served as United States assistant attorney general for the National Security Division from April 2014 to October 15, 2016, and as chief of staff to Robert Mueller during his time as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
