Australian Holographics was a laboratory based in Adelaide, South Australia. It was established in 1989; the laboratory was used to try to produce high-quality large format holograms. After two years of development, the company began commercial operations in 1991. [1] The laboratory eventually shut down in 1998. The lab was situated on 80 acres (320,000 m2) of rural farmland 25 miles (40 km) from Adelaide.

Facilities

The lab's facilities included a 5×6 meters vibration isolation table in a studio with air-lock loading doors. The main laser was a continuous wave, 6 W argon laser built by Coherent Scientific. The company also used a 3-joule ruby pulse laser, built in collaboration with Professor Jesper Munch of the School of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Adelaide.

The company specialized in the production of large white-light-viewable rainbow holograms, a type of holography originally invented in 1968 by Stephen Benton of MIT. In 1992, Australian Holographics produced a 2×1 metre rainbow transmission hologram of a Mitsubishi station wagon car, which was shown at the Holographics International '92 conference in London. [2]

For the AH project,[ further explanation needed ] they built a large climate-controlled studio that incorporated a 6×5 metre, 25-ton optical table. [1] A sand-filled cavity steel construction was used for the table. The suspension system was constructed around nine Firestone air bags connected to a standard pneumatic set-up. Overhead towers were designed to carry large transfer mirrors at heights of over three meters above the table. These towers were constructed from hollow steel tubes filled with sand. [3]

History

Australian Holographics Pty Ltd. was incorporated in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1989 by David Brotherton Ratcliffe. At the time, Ratcliffe was a Research Fellow in Physics in the School of Physical Sciences, at Flinders University. The senior holographers working with Ratcliffe were initially Geoffrey Fox, and subsequently Mark Trinne.[ citation needed ]

In 1992, Ratcliffe formed GEOLA Labs in Vilnius, Lithuania, to concentrate on the manufacture of pulsed neodymium YLF lasers. In May 1992, Simon Edhouse joined Australian Holographics as Marketing Manager and became the General Manager later that year. Then the company focused on international science museums. It sold large holograms to museums in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei and Japan. In 1993, Sunkung Corporation of South Korea commissioned Australian Holographics to produce an exhibition of ten large format holograms for Expo '93.[ citation needed ] In October 1993, Ratcliffe relocated to Europe and handed operational control to Simon Edhouse and his company, Multi Cellular Media Pty. Ltd. Simon Edhouse managed the marketing and overall operations until the Australian facility closed in 1998.[ citation needed ]

In 1994, Australian Holographics produced a series of holographic billboards for the Singaporean military to promote the 'NS Men' (National Service Men) campaign, unveiled by the Singapore Minister for Defence. [4] [5] The holograms were rainbow transmissions and enclosed in a compact viewing enclosure. Also in 1994, Multi Cellular Media Pty. Ltd., trading as Australian Holographics, signed a joint venture agreement with the South Australian Museum, giving the company access to the museum's vast collection of exhibits.[ citation needed ]

Holographic projects

One of the first projects undertaken by the venture was the production of a 1.6×1.1 metre rainbow transmission hologram of a family of thylacines. The holographic thylacines, shown standing on a rocky outcrop in a field of dry grass, portray the now-extinct thylacines as a family group, with the small thylacine pup protruding 50 cm in front of the holographic image-plane. [6] The finished hologram debuted at the SA Museum as part of the Inaugural Innovate SA festival in September 1995. [7]

The company also produced a 1.5×1.1 metre hologram of a Tyrannosaurus rex skull from the SA Museum's collection. In 1995, a large series of holograms were produced of satellites and space vehicles. There is also a 2.1×1.1 metre rainbow transmission hologram of the MIR Space Station. The model of the Earth in this hologram was custom-made by Adelaide artist John Haratsis.

Artists working with Australian Holographics

In 1992, Professor Ju Yong Lee, [8] a lecturer at the Korea National University of Arts, was given a grant by the company to undertake a period as artist-in-residence. In 1993, he commissioned Australian Holographics to produce a series of ten large format holograms, designed by Lee, that were displayed at the Korean Expo in Seoul.

In 1995, holographic artist Paula Dawson was also awarded an artist in residence grant by the company to produce a 30×40 cm reflection hologram for the Shrine of the Sacred Heart for St. Brigid's Church in Sydney. [9] The hologram depicted a four-metre spherical geodesic dome made from reinforced plaster and constructed in the lab. It also contained hundreds of frangipani flowers, in dozens of egg cartons, flown from Sydney on the day of the shoot. The hologram was partly funded by the Catholic Church and the Australian Artist Creative Fellowship from the Australia Council. [10]

The rainbow hologram is a type of hologram that was invented in 1968 by Dr. Stephen A. Benton at Polaroid Corporation. Rainbow holograms are designed to be viewed under white light illumination, rather than laser light which was required before this. The rainbow holography recording process uses a horizontal slit to eliminate vertical parallax in the output image, greatly reducing spectral blur while preserving three-dimensionality for most observers. A viewer moving up or down in front of a rainbow hologram sees changing spectral colors rather than different vertical perspectives. Because perspective effects are reproduced along one axis only, the subject will appear variously stretched or squashed when the hologram is not viewed at an optimum distance; this distortion may go unnoticed when there is not much depth, but can be severe when the distance of the subject from the plane of the hologram is very substantial. Stereopsis and horizontal motion parallax, two relatively powerful cues to depth, are preserved.

Digital holography is the acquisition and processing of holograms with a digital sensor array, typically a CCD camera or a similar device. Image rendering, or reconstruction of object data is performed numerically from digitized interferograms. Digital holography offers a means of measuring optical phase data and typically delivers three-dimensional surface or optical thickness images. Several recording and processing schemes have been developed to assess optical wave characteristics such as amplitude, phase, and polarization state, which make digital holography a very powerful method for metrology applications .

Computer-generated holography (CGH) is a technique that uses computer algorithms to generate holograms. It involves generating holographic interference patterns. A computer-generated hologram can be displayed on a dynamic holographic display, or it can be printed onto a mask or film using lithography. When a hologram is printed onto a mask or film, it is then illuminated by a coherent light source to display the holographic images.

Rudge ('48) and Nancy Allen Professor of Media & Sciences, and the Director for Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) at MIT.

A holographic display is a type of 3D display that utilizes light diffraction to display a three-dimensional image to the viewer. Holographic displays are distinguished from other forms of 3D displays in that they do not require the viewer to wear any special glasses or use external equipment to be able to see the image, and do not cause a vergence-accommodation conflict.

Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) is digital holography applied to microscopy. Digital holographic microscopy distinguishes itself from other microscopy methods by not recording the projected image of the object. Instead, the light wave front information originating from the object is digitally recorded as a hologram, from which a computer calculates the object image by using a numerical reconstruction algorithm. The image forming lens in traditional microscopy is thus replaced by a computer algorithm. Other closely related microscopy methods to digital holographic microscopy are interferometric microscopy, optical coherence tomography and diffraction phase microscopy. Common to all methods is the use of a reference wave front to obtain amplitude (intensity) and phase information. The information is recorded on a digital image sensor or by a photodetector from which an image of the object is created (reconstructed) by a computer. In traditional microscopy, which do not use a reference wave front, only intensity information is recorded and essential information about the object is lost.

Specular holography is a technique for making three dimensional imagery by controlling the motion of specular glints on a two-dimensional surface. The image is made of many specularities and has the appearance of a 3D surface-stippling made of dots of light. Unlike conventional wavefront holograms, specular holograms do not depend on wave optics, photographic media, or lasers.

He is one of the pioneers of holography, and has also worked as an educator, recording engineer, artist, blogger, and actor. He has created portrait holograms of Andy Warhol, President Bill Clinton, Isaac Asimov, NYC Mayor Ed Koch, Prime Minister Edward Heath, Pierre Cardin, Sally Jessy Raphael, John Kenneth Galbraith, Phyllis Diller, Billy Idol, The Smothers Brothers, Phil Donahue, and John Cage. His corporate clientele include commissions for Mitsubishi, AT&T, Tag Heuer, Goodyear, IBM and NYU Medical Center.

Margaret Benyon,, was a British artist. Trained as a painter, she was one of the first artists to use holography as a medium and had her first solo show of holograms in 1969. She was appointed to the Order of the British Empire in 2000 for her service to art and has been called "the mother of British holography".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Matthew Schreiber</span> American artist (born 1967)

Matthew Schreiber is an American artist who is known for his work in holography and for his large scale laser light sculptures. Matthew Schreiber produces work in a wide variety of mediums, including drawing, performance, sculpture, video, and light. Recurring subjects within Schreiber's work center on novelty, the occult, and spectacle by using tools of physics, technology and perception. He has exhibited his work internationally, and most recently at large music festivals, an example of which can be found in his 2018 installation at Dark MOFO in Tasmania, in which Schreiber created a massive laser-light installation that completely immersed viewers.

Optical holography is a technique which enables an optical wavefront to be recorded and later re-constructed. Holography is best known as a method of generating three-dimensional images but it also has a wide range of other applications.
