The Australian Polo Federation (also known as Australian Polo Council) is the governing body for the sport of Polo in Australia.

Overview

The Australian Polo Federation is the main governing body for the sport of polo in Australia. It is affiliated with the Federation of International Polo (FIP) and the Hurlingham Polo Association, [1] as well as the Confederation of Australian Sport. [2] [3]

The federation comprises associations of all Australian states except for Tasmania and the Northern Territory. [4]

Australian Polo Hall of Fame

In 2012, the federation established the Australian Polo Hall of Fame. The inaugural inductees included the Ashton Brothers, John Sinclair-Hill , [5] Robert Skene, Jim MacGinley, Peter Cudmore, Ken Telford and James Ashton. [6]

The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) is the governing body for polo in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates and many other countries. The Federation of International Polo produces the International Rules of Polo through a cooperative agreement with the Hurlingham Polo Association, the Asociacion Argentina de Polo, and the United States Polo Association.

The Federation of International Polo (FIP) is the international federation representing the sport of polo, officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The FIP was founded in 1982 by representatives of eleven national polo associations, and it represents the national polo associations of more than 80 countries. Its principal aim is to enhance the international image and status of polo.

The World Polo Championship is a polo competition between countries. The event is organised by the sport's governing body, the Federation of International Polo (FIP), and is contested by the national teams. There is no restriction on the gender of the players. The inaugural tournament was held in 1987, hosted by Argentina, and is now contested every three or four years.

Charles Robertson Skene, commonly known as Robert or Bob and nicknamed Hurricane Bob, was an Australian 10-goal polo player. He was a founding inductee of the Australian Polo Federation Hall of Fame, the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and the U.S. Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame.

Thomas Hoad is an Australian water polo coach and former player. In 1968, he was appointed to International Swimming Federation (FINA), the world governing body for swimming and was chairman of the 1998 World Swimming Championships held in Perth, Western Australia. He is currently a director of the national controlling body Australian Water Polo. He currently coaches juniors at Melville and at a state level in WA.

Water Polo Australia (WPA) is the national governing body for Water Polo in Australia, headquartered in Sydney. WPA in its current form was formed in 1982, when it broke away from the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia (now Swimming Australia) to become the Australian Amateur Water Polo Association (AAWPA). Prior to that time, water polo was administered by a sub-committee of the ASUA. In January 1990 the AAWPA changed its name to 'Water Polo Australia Incorporated'.
