Australians in Film (AiF) is a Los Angeles-based non-profit organization that serves the Australian community working in the film and television industry. It awards the annual Heath Ledger Scholarship to emerging Australian actors, as well as several other programs which help actors and filmmakers to develop their careers.

History

Australians in Film was founded in Los Angeles, California, in May 2001, to celebrate and support Australian film and TV makers and their work. [1]

In 2008, Australians in Film established the annual Heath Ledger Scholarship, named in honor of Australian actor Heath Ledger, [2] who was an ambassador of the group.

In 2012 the organization established an Annual Benefit Dinner to raise funds for scholarships and career development programs. The honorees at the first event included John Polson, Liam Hemsworth and Yvonne Strahovski. In 2013, Australians in Film launched the Orry-Kelly International Award for Australians who have achieved in the film and TV business overseas.[ citation needed ]

In 2015, Australians in Film announced that Foxtel will become the naming rights sponsor of the Breakthrough Awards.[ citation needed ]

Description

AiF is based at the Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, occupying a shared workspace known as Charlie's. [1]

As of May 2022 AiF has over 700 members, who included actors, filmmakers and people from the U.S. film industry.

Governance and funding

As of May 2022 producer Emma Cooper is chair of the board that oversees the organisation. [1]

AiF is supported by Screen Australia, Screen NSW, Screen Queensland, Film Victoria, AFTRS and the University of Melbourne (Victorian College of the Arts), as well as commercial partners including Ausfilm, Animal Logic, Bird in Hand winery, Yowie Chocolates, Penfolds and Raynor & Associates. [1]

Programs and awards

AiF runs a number of programs to help Australian actors and filmmakers to develop their careers. Untapped (for emerging writers and directors), Talent Gateway (for established writers and directors), and Global Producers Exchange (for producers) are programs presented by Screen Australia and supported by Screen NSW, VicScreen, Screen Queensland, and the South Australian Film Corporation. AiF is also home to Charlie's, a creative co-working space and industry incubator founded in 2016 by Screen NSW, AFTRS, and Film Victoria (now VicScreen), named after Charlie Chaplin and originally intended as a "soft landing" for Australian professionals new to Hollywood. It and has grown and expanded since then, and is located at AiF headquarters in West Hollywood. [4]

Heath Ledger Scholarship

The Heath Ledger Scholarship includes a $US10,000 cash prize; a return economy flight to the US; and administrative and educational support for the actor's career. [5]

Joel Edgerton is an Australian actor and filmmaker. He is known for his portrayal of Will McGill on the first two seasons of the Australian drama series The Secret Life of Us (2001–02), and for playing Owen Lars in the Star Wars films Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005), a role he reprised in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022). For his portrayal of Richard Loving in the 2016 historical drama Loving, he received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture.

The Adelaide Film Festival is a film festival usually held for two weeks in mid-October in cinemas in Adelaide, South Australia. Originally presented biennially in March from 2003, since 2013 AFF has been held in October. Subject to funding, the festival has staged full or briefer events in alternating years; some form of event has taken place every year since 2015. From 2022 it takes place annually. It has a strong focus on local South Australian and Australian produced content, with the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund (AFFIF) established to fund investment in Australian films.

Ryan Christian Kwanten is an Australian actor and producer. He played Vinnie Patterson from 1997 to 2002 in the Australian soap opera Home and Away. After his stint ended, he joined the American teen drama series Summerland, portraying Jay Robertson. From 2008 to 2014, he played Jason Stackhouse in True Blood. From 2018 to 2019 he produced and starred in the crime drama series The Oath as Steve Hammond. In 2021 he starred in season one of the horror drama anthology series Them as George Bell. In 2022, he portrayed Thomas Weylin in Kindred, a series adaptation based on Octavia E. Butler's celebrated 1979 novel of the same name.

Yvonne Jaqueline Strzechowski, known professionally as Yvonne Strahovski, is an Australian actress. She is known for roles as Sarah Walker in the spy comedy drama series Chuck (2007–2012), Hannah McKay in the drama series Dexter (2012–2013) and Kate Morgan in the event series 24: Live Another Day (2014). Strahovski stars as Serena Joy Waterford in the drama series The Handmaid's Tale (2017–present), for which she has received nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Golden Globe Award.

The Australian Film Institute International Award for Best Actor was an award in the annual Australian Film Institute Awards. It was awarded from 2005-2010. The award has been superseded by the AFI's AACTA International Award for Best Actor.

Heath Andrew Ledger was an Australian actor. After playing roles in several Australian television and film productions during the 1990s, he moved to the United States in 1998 to further develop his film career. His work consisted of 20 films in a variety of genres, including 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), The Patriot (2000), A Knight's Tale (2001), Monster's Ball (2001), Casanova (2005), Lords of Dogtown (2005), Brokeback Mountain (2005), Candy (2006), I'm Not There (2007), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), the latter two of which were posthumously released. He also produced and directed music videos and aspired to be a film director.

The Joker is a character portrayed by Heath Ledger and the main antagonist in Christopher Nolan's 2008 superhero film The Dark Knight. Based on the DC Comics supervillain of the same name, he is depicted as a psychopathic criminal mastermind with a warped, sadistic sense of humor who defines himself by his conflict with the vigilante Batman. In the film, the Joker tests how far Batman will go to save Gotham City from descending into chaos by targeting the Caped Crusader's allies, including police lieutenant James Gordon and district attorney Harvey Dent.

Screenwise is an Australian film and television school for actors based in Surry Hills, Sydney. The school, established in 2000 and using only Australian Film Institute Award winners as teachers, is overseen by actor Denise Roberts. By June 2010, Screenwise was considered one of Australia's leading film and television schools for actors.

Elizabeth Debicki is an Australian actress. Born in Paris and raised in Melbourne, she studied acting at the University of Melbourne, and made her film debut in the comedy A Few Best Men (2011). She gained wider recognition with her performances in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby (2013)—which won her the AACTA Award for Best Supporting Actress—and as Ayesha in the Marvel films Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). Debicki's profile grew with roles in the limited series The Kettering Incident and The Night Manager and in Steve McQueen's heist thriller Widows (2018), and in 2019, she received the Cannes Trophée Chopard.

Cody Fern is an Australian actor and director. Following his feature debut in The Tribes of Palos Verdes (2017), he portrayed murder victim David Madson in the FX series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (2018). Later that year, Fern played Michael Langdon in American Horror Story: Apocalypse. He appeared in the final season of the Netflix drama House of Cards as Duncan Shepherd. In 2019, he returned to American Horror Story for its ninth season 1984, playing Xavier Plympton. In 2021, he guest-starred in the tenth season, subtitled Double Feature as Valiant Thor, and has appeared in two episodes of the spin-off series American Horror Stories.

<i>The Dressmaker</i> (2015 film) 2015 film by Jocelyn Moorhouse

The Dressmaker is a 2015 Australian comedy drama film co-written and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, based on the 2000 novel of the same name by Rosalie Ham. It stars Kate Winslet as femme fatale dressmaker, Myrtle "Tilly" Dunnage, who returns to a small Australian town to take care of her ailing, mentally unstable mother. The film explores the themes of revenge and creativity and was described by Moorhouse as "Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven with a sewing machine". The film was internationally co-financed between Australia and the United States. The vocal accent of Winslet with an Australian accent was universally lauded and is widely considered to be one of the greatest Australian accents by an actor not native to Australia, as well as one of the best foreign accents delivered in global film.

Lily Sullivan is an Australian actress. She played Coral in the 2012 film Mental, and Miranda in the 2018 television series Picnic at Hanging Rock. She plays leading roles in two 2023 feature films, Australian sci-fi thriller Monolith, and American horror film Evil Dead Rise.

Bruna Papandrea is an Australian film and television producer and the founder of production company Made Up Stories. Prior to Made Up Stories, Papandrea co-founded the production company Pacific Standard with Reese Witherspoon.

Wolf Like Me is an Australian comedy-drama television series produced by Stan in association with NBCUniversal and Peacock. It premiered on both streaming services on 13 January 2022. In April 2022, Peacock renewed the series for a second season. As of January 2024 it is not clear if there will be a third series.

Wizards! is an upcoming stoner comedy film written and directed by David Michôd and starring Pete Davidson, Franz Rogowski, Naomi Scott, Sean Harris, and Orlando Bloom.
