BBC Brit is an entertainment subscription television channel featuring factual entertainment programming. The channel is wholly owned and operated by BBC Studios. Originally set to roll out internationally in 2014, [1] it was later announced it would launch in 2015, [2] starting in Poland. [3]

History

In October 2013, BBC announced that in 2014 they would roll out three new brands – BBC Earth, BBC First, and BBC Brit, with BBC Brit to be dedicated to entertainment programming. [1] It was later announced that the content would largely be factual entertainment, featuring BBC series Top Gear with the possibility for increases in local adaptions of the series. Other series are to include Room 101 and Mock the Week . [4] [5] It was also announced that roughly 50 hours, or roughly 5 series, of new content would be ordered for the new channel. [6]

International roll-out

Poland

BBC Brit premiered in Poland on 1 February 2015, replacing BBC Entertainment. [3]

Nordic Countries

BBC Brit replaced BBC Entertainment in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland on 13 April 2015. [7] [8]

Africa

The channel launched on DStv in Africa replacing BBC Entertainment on 1 September 2015. [9]

St Helena

The channel is broadcast in St Helena by Sure South Atlantic Ltd's Sure television service alongside BBC World and BBC Lifestyle (the latter only with the company's Premium Package of channels). [10] [11]

Australia

BBC Brit and BBC Earth launched in Australia on 1 November 2019, through IPTV streaming service Fetch TV. [12] Unlike other versions of the channel, this one is a video on demand service with selected programming accessible through the TV guide.

Singapore

The channel's content is offered exclusively on BBC Player Singapore (a local version of the BBC iPlayer service). [13]

Malaysia

The channel's content is offered exclusively on BBC Player Malaysia (a local version of the BBC iPlayer service). [14]

BBC Worldwide 1979–2018 commercial subsidiary of the BBC

BBC Worldwide Ltd. was the wholly owned commercial subsidiary of the BBC, formed out of a restructuring of its predecessor BBC Enterprises in January 1995. The company monetises BBC brands, selling BBC and other British programming for broadcast abroad with the aim of supplementing the income received by the BBC through the licence fee.

BBC iPlayer Internet streaming, catchup, television and radio service

BBC iPlayer is a video on demand service from the BBC. The service is available on a wide range of devices, including mobile phones and tablets, personal computers and smart televisions. iPlayer services delivered to UK-based viewers feature no commercial advertising. The terms BBC iPlayer, iPlayer, and BBC Media Player refer to various methods of viewing or listening to the same content. Viewing or recording live television broadcasts from any UK broadcaster or viewing BBC TV catch-up or BBC TV on-demand programmes in the UK without a TV licence is a criminal offence.

The BBC is forbidden under its charter to directly undertake any commercial operations on-air within the United Kingdom; however, no such restriction applies to operations in other countries. Therefore, the BBC exploits its massive television archive by operating a number of commercial television channels outside the UK through its BBC Studios subsidiary.

Disney Branded Television is a unit of Disney General Entertainment Content which oversees development and production of content geared towards kids, teens and families for Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD. Headed by the former Disney Channels Worldwide President/CCO, Gary Marsh, the unit also oversees all Disney+ and Disney Channels unscripted series and specials.

BBC First (Canadian TV channel)

BBC First is a Canadian English language high definition Category B television channel owned by Blue Ant Media. It is a localized version of the international BBC First service, which broadcasts a variety of drama, comedy, and film programming originating primarily from the BBC.

BBC Earth (Canadian TV channel)

BBC Earth is a Canadian discretionary service channel owned by Blue Ant Media. The brand and much of its programming is licensed from BBC Worldwide, the commercial subsidiary of the BBC in the United Kingdom, who owns the originating BBC Earth channel. The channel broadcasts factual programming related to natural history and wildlife.

BBC Entertainment is an international television channel broadcasting comedy, drama, light entertainment, reality and children's programming from the BBC, Channel 4 and other UK production houses. The channel broadcasts regional versions to suit local demands and replaced BBC Prime. It is wholly owned by BBC Studios.

BBC Knowledge (international)

BBC Knowledge was a television channel available in various countries outside the United Kingdom, showcasing factual and non-fiction entertainment programming from the BBC and independent UK production houses. Wholly owned by BBC Studios, it is not related to the previous channel known as BBC Knowledge, an early digital channel available within the UK, which closed down in 2002 in favour of BBC Four and CBeebies.

BBC Studios British television studio

BBC Studios is a British content company and commercial subsidiary of the BBC Group. It was formed in April 2018 through the merger of the BBC's commercial production arm and the BBC's commercial international distribution arm, BBC Worldwide. BBC Studios creates, develops, produces, distributes, broadcasts, finances and sells content around the world, returning around £200m to the BBC Group annually in dividends and content investment.

CBBC (TV channel) British free-to-air childrens television channel operated by the BBC

CBBC is a British free-to-air children's television channel owned and operated by the BBC and the brand used for all BBC content for children and teenagers aged 6 to 17. Launching on 11 February 2002 alongside its sister channel, CBeebies, which serves the under eight audience, the name was previously used to brand all BBC Children's content. CBBC broadcasts for fourteen hours per-day from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. CBBC was named Channel of the Year at the Children's BAFTA awards in November 2008 and 2012 and 2015. The channel averages 300,000 viewers daily.

Fetch TV

Fetch TV is an Australian IPTV provider that delivers a subscription television service over a user's regular internet service. Fetch TV launched in 2010 backed by its Malaysian parent Astro All Asia Networks, which owns 75% in the company.

BBC HD is an international high-definition television channel provided by BBC Studios. In many countries the channel has been replaced by other BBC Studios operations. At present, the channel is only available in Turkey, selected cruise ships and within the maritime industry.

BritBox Internet media streaming and video on demand service broadcasting British TV

BritBox is an online digital video subscription service, operating as a joint venture of the BBC and ITV plc, serving the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Australia, with an upcoming launch in South Africa. It is focused on British television series and films, mainly featuring current and past series and films supplied from the main UK public service broadcasters, in addition to original programming. BritBox is said to feature the biggest collection of British box sets available in one place, with additional original programming available from 2020. BritBox's focus on British content has led to the service being described as a 'niche streaming service' in the US.

Fix & Foxi (TV channel)

Fix & Foxi is an international children's entertainment brand founded by the German company Your Family Entertainment. Themed around Rolf Kauka's Fix and Foxi characters, the name is used to operate television channels in multiple languages around the world.
