BBC Chartering GmbH, owned by the Briese Schiffahrt Group, is an international shipping company based in Leer, Germany. With over 160 vessels in their fleet, BBC Chartering is the largest multipurpose, heavy lift and project shipping company in the world. [1] BBC Chartering concentrates on specialized marine transport.

History

BBC Chartering opened its first office in Bremen, Germany in 1997. Two years later, the headquarters was moved to Leer, Germany. Offices in Argentina and Houston, Texas followed. Through joint ventures, BBC continued to expand its presence and services to Latin America, Asia and the Mediterranean. The Singapore office was established in 2004 through a joint venture with Clipper Projects called Asia Project Chartering (APC).[ citation needed ] Today the company operates 30 global offices with main hubs in Leer, Houston, and Singapore. [2]

Depending on the class of ship, heavy goods up to a maximum unit weight of 800 t can be loaded and unloaded using the on-board cranes. [3]

Professional skippers and additional qualified persons (AQPs) lead each teams on the 10-month journey. All participants must complete a four-week training course before starting the race. The race was conceived in 1995 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and is run by Clipper Ventures plc. The race has been held every two years since 1996, although in 2004 there was not a race and biennial racing resumed in 2005.

BW Group is a maritime company involved in shipping, floating gas infrastructure and deep-water oil & gas production. The company has over 490 vessels managed by an international team of over 12,000 staff worldwide. The group was founded by Sir Yue-Kong Pao in Hong Kong in 1955 as World-Wide Shipping. Odfjell SE is a company specialising in worldwide seaborne transportation and storage of chemicals and other speciality bulk liquids. The Odfjell fleet comprises more than 80 ships in total. The ships transport around 600 different kinds of liquids, including organic and inorganic bulk liquid chemicals, acids, animal fats, edible oils, portable alcohols and clean petroleum products. Odfjell’s ships are mainly registered in Norway (NIS) and Singapore, and are primarily manned by Norwegian and Filipino mariners.

Simpson Spence & Young, (SSY), Simpson Spence Young, Simpson, Spence & Young Ltd. was founded in 1880 by Ernest Simpson, Lewis Spence and Captain William Young in New York City. Ernest Louis Simpson started as a shipbroker from England. Simpson joined with shipbroker Lewis H. Spence and started Simpson & Spence in 1880. In 1882 Captain William Young joined the company and the name was changed to Simpson Spence & Young. Simpson Spence & Young opened a second office in Newcastle upon Tyne in England. Simpson son Ernest Aldrich Simpson (1897-1958) joined the company. The Simpson Spence & Young became very successful and becoming a worldwide shipping firm, with headquarters in London, one of the largest shipbrokers. Simpson Spence Young has 19 offices worldwide with over 400 employees. Simpson Spence Young operates dry bulk, tanker ships, tugboats and has other services.
