Baku TV is an Azerbaijani internet-based, satellite, and cable television channel founded by Orkhan Mammadov and led by Ramin Jafarov. [1] It began broadcasting on 18 February 2018, [2] later as a linear television channel on satellite in 2023. [3] It is owned by the Global Media Group. [4]

History

Baku TV commenced transmissions on 12 February 2018. [2] The channel opened a Russian-language editorial office in 2021. [5] The channel was one of the winners of the NETTY 2021 National Internet Awards held on 16 December of that year, specifically in the Information and News category. [6] [7] The National Television and Radio Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan granted Baku TV a license on 16 November 2022. [8] [9]

Baku TV commenced broadcasts on cable television in December 2022 after it was added onto the Connect TV cable provider. [10] It was later made available onto other cable providers over time, such as on KATV1 and Aile TV. [11] [12] On 19 September 2023, Baku TV commenced test broadcasts on satellite television via Azerspace-1. [3] Regular satellite broadcasts began on 30 October. [13]

Azerspace-1/Africasat-1a', is Azerbaijan's first satellite in space. Built by Orbital Sciences Corporation, it was launched by Ariane 5 into orbit on February 7, 2013 from Kourou in French Guiana at orbital positions 46° east. The satellite covers Europe and a significant part of Asia and Africa. It is operated by the Azerbaijani company Azercosmos and has transmission capabilities for TV, radio broadcasting and the internet.

An over-the-top media service is a digital distribution service offered directly to viewers via the public Internet, rather than through an over-the-air, cable, or satellite-based provider. The term is synonymous with "streaming platform", such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video which provide access to subscription-based film and television content (SVoD).

Space Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azercosmos) (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Respublikasının Kosmik Agentliyi - Azərkosmos) is a public legal entity under Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan and successor of Azercosmos Open Joint Stock Company, the first satellite operator in the Caucasus region entirely owned by the Government of Azerbaijan. With the telecommunication satellite Azerspace-1, the company provides broadband and broadcast services to customers in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. With the Earth Observation satellite Azersky, Azercosmos provides satellite imagery and geoinformation services. Since 2021 the Chairman of the Broad of Azercosmos is Samaddin Asadov.

It was launched on 15 March 2018 and is owned by Real Analysis Information Center. Real TV is headquartered in the Narimanov raion of Baku. The channel is considered to be the successor of ANS TV due to the number of similarities, although a Baku State University professor assured that it is a different network altogether.

Despite its name, the channel has no connection with the American cable television channel MTV, and instead was launched as the local feed of Russian music channel Muz-TV. MTV Azerbaijan is headquartered at Tbilisi Avenue in Baku. It is the first music-oriented television channel in Azerbaijan.
