CBC, acronym of Caspian Broadcasting Company, is an Azerbaijani privately owned television channel owned by SOCAR and headquartered at 8 November Avenue in Baku. [1] It is the first international television channel of Azerbaijan, launched in 2009 as ATV International, later utilizing its current name in 2013 after it was acquired from Azad Azerbaijan TV. The channel broadcasts in Russian. [2]

History

On 5 March 2009, Azad Azerbaijan TV was granted a license to operate "ATV International", set to broadcast exclusively via satellite to international viewers for up to six years. [3] [4] It began operations on 5 October using the Türksat 3A satellite and equipment imported from Germany and the United States. [5] ATV International was later officially launched on 24 December. [6]

As ATV International was not a commercial channel, there were issues regarding the use of modern facilities. This resulted in Azad Azerbaijan TV later handing ATV International over to the media wing of SOCAR, SOCAR Media Public Union, on 10 April 2013, rebranding the channel as CBC, standing for the Caspian Broadcasting Company. It was set to promote the state's policy while representing the business interests of SOCAR, and also to become the leading television channel in the South Caucasus region. [7] [8]

Journalist Azar Khalilov became the director general of the television channel. [9] Earlier, the Caspian International Broadcasting Company was granted a six-year broadcasting license at a National Television and Radio Council meeting held on 2 April. [10] When ANS Radio was being criticized for allegedly broadcasting Armenian music in May 2014, its authorities argued that CBC was broadcasting in Armenian. Khalilov responded by saying that it is a distinct matter and is only broadcast in Armenian to promote Azerbaijan to the world. [11] The channel aired the Azerbaijan Premier League matches in the Azerbaijani language in August 2015. [12]

In November 2017, Vugar Khalilov succeeded as the director general of CBC. [13] CBC was accused of allegedly promoting anti-Armenian propaganda in January 2024 through one of its documentaries titled Elimination of Yerevan's History. [14] [15] However, on 11 September, a documentary on the lost heritage of Azerbaijanis in the Armenian capital Yerevan titled Hidden Heritage of Yerevan was nominated for a prize at the Around International Film Festival held in Amsterdam. [16] [17]

Programming

During its existence as ATV International, the channel had broadcast news programming in English, Armenian, Persian, and Russian, in addition to native Azerbaijani. It also aired documentaries regarding the heritage, culture, art, and architecture of Azerbaijan, as well as concerts of prominent Azerbaijani artists and local and foreign feature films. [6] After the rebrand, 90% of CBC's programming was set to be in languages spoken in the South Caucasus region, while the rest was to be broadcast in languages spoken in Azerbaijan. [7] The channel continued broadcasting in the four languages as mentioned earlier. [8] Nowadays, CBC broadcasts in Russian for 24 hours a day. [2]

The State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan, largely known by its abbreviation SOCAR, is a fully state-owned national oil and gas company headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan. The company produces oil and natural gas from onshore and offshore fields in the Azerbaijani segment of the Caspian Sea. It operates the country's only oil refinery, one gas processing plant and runs several oil and gas export pipelines throughout the country. It owns fuel filling station networks under the SOCAR brand in Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Ukraine, Romania, Switzerland, and Austria.

The participation of Azerbaijan in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest first began at the tenth edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 which took place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. İctimai Television (İTV), a member organisation of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), were responsible for the selection process of their participation. Azerbaijan originally used a national final format for their participation at the 2012 contest. The first representatives to participate for the nation at the 2012 contest were Omar & Suada with the song "Girls and Boys ", which finished in eleventh place out of twelve participating entries. After participating for a second time in 2013 and finishing seventh, İTV withdrew from the contest in 2014 for unspecified reasons. The country returned to participate in 2018 where they placed sixteenth in a field of twenty, before withdrawing once again for a further two years. Azerbaijan returned to the 2021 contest in Paris, France, with İTV internally selected Sona Azizova to represent the nation with "One Of Those Days". Azizova achieved Azerbaijan's highest placing to date, achieving fifth place in a field of 19. İTV then withdrew again from the 2022 contest in Yerevan, Armenia and are yet to return.

ARB, abbreviated from Azerbaijani Republic Broadcaster, is an Azerbaijani privately owned national terrestrial television channel launched on 10 May 2014 as Region TV with the merger of six regional television stations. It was rebranded as ARB in 2016. ARB is headquartered in the Yasamal raion of Baku and owned by the ARB Media Group, which operates eight television channels in total including ARB itself, along with a radio station Kapaz FM.

Murad Dadashov is an Azerbaijani actor, producer, TV host, member of Parni iz Baku KVN team and head of M Group Production. In 2014, Murad Dadashov was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan Republic. On 27.05.2018, he was titled People Artist of Azerbaijan.

Despite its name, the channel has no connection with the American cable television channel MTV, and instead was launched as the local feed of Russian music channel Muz-TV. MTV Azerbaijan is headquartered at Tbilisi Avenue in Baku. It is the first music-oriented television channel in Azerbaijan.
