Ballysodare railway station, [a] currently with only the goods shed remaining, was located on the Dublin-Sligo railway line in Ballysadare, County Sligo. The station opened on 3 December 1862. It was closed to passengers on 17 June 1963 and finally closing to goods on 3 November 1975. [1]
The station is believed to have been double tracked since opening, being singled in 1958. [2]
Ballysodare station was on the Midland Great Western Railway which became part of Irish Rail. [3] From 1882 until 1957 it also was served by the last independent railway in the British Isles, the Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway from Enniskillen. [3] [4] The Burma Road or the Western Rail Corridor line to Claremorris Junction, Tuam and Galway was served from the station as well as Sligo station.
The station had its own small goods shed at the northern end of the west platform. [5] Just beyond that a long siding diverged south westwards to the Flour Mills at Ballysadare; it was removed in the 1960s. [5]
The Great Southern and Western Railway (GS&WR) was an Irish gauge railway company in Ireland from 1844 until 1924. The GS&WR grew by building lines and making a series of takeovers, until in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was the largest of Ireland's "Big Four" railway networks. At its peak the GS&WR had an 1,100-mile (1,800 km) network, of which 240 miles (390 km) were double track.
The Dublin and South Eastern Railway (DSER), often referred to as the Slow and Easy, was an Irish gauge railway in Ireland from 1846 to 1925. It carried 4,626,226 passengers in 1911. It was the fourth largest railway operation in Ireland operating a main line from Dublin to Wexford, with branch lines to Shillelagh and Waterford. Northampton railway station serves the market town of Northampton in Northamptonshire, England. Ballysadare, locally also Ballisodare, is a town in County Sligo, Ireland. It is about 7 km (4 mi) south of Sligo town. The town developed on an important crossing of the Owenmore River. Ballysadare is in a townland and civil parish of the same name.
The Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) was the third largest Irish gauge railway company in Ireland. It was incorporated in 1845 and absorbed into the Great Southern Railways in 1924. At its peak the MGWR had a network of 538 miles (866 km), making it Ireland's third largest network after the Great Southern and Western Railway (GS&WR) and the Great Northern Railway of Ireland.

Sligo railway station, also known as MacDiarmada station, is a mainline railway station which serves the town of Sligo in County Sligo, Ireland. It is a terminal station which now has two platforms and an intermediate carriage siding. The railway at the station is elevated above the surrounding streets and the station building dominates its surrounds. There is a passing loop at the approach to the station. It is named after Irish patriot Seán Mac Diarmada. Iarnród Éireann, Ireland's national railway operator, runs inter-city rail services between Sligo and Dublin on the Dublin-Sligo railway line.
The Dublin to Sligo main line is a railway route operated by Iarnród Éireann in Ireland. It starts in Dublin Connolly station, terminating at Sligo Mac Diarmada railway station in Sligo. The route is a double-track railway as far as Maynooth, being a single-track railway with passing loops between there and Sligo.
The Oxford, Witney and Fairford Railway was a single track railway branch line, 22 miles (35 km) long, in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. It was opened in succession by two companies, the first in 1861 to connect the important woollen town of Witney to the main line network, and the second in 1873 as the rump of an ambitious scheme to connect to Cheltenham, but which ran only between Witney and Fairford. The Galway to Clifden Railway or Connemara Railway was a railway line opened in Ireland by the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) in 1895. It led from Galway to Clifden, the chief town of the sparsely populated Connemara region in western County Galway. It was closed by the MGWR's successor, the Great Southern Railways (GSR) in 1935.
