Bankim Chandra Ray (born 1 November 1926) is an Indian former judge of the Supreme Court of India and politician.
Ray was born to Bhuson Chandra Ray into a rich Poundra Kshatriya zamindar family at 24 Praganas,Bengal Presidency,British India (now West Bengal,India). He did his schooling from Multi Peary Srimantha Institution at Magrahat,in 1946 he completed his B.A from Ripon College (now Surendranath College),in 1951 completed his LL.B in from University Law College (now Department of Law,University of Calcutta) and M.A (Political Economy) from University of Calcutta. In 1952 he got enrolled as a lawyer at Calcutta High Court and started his private practice. He got posted as Additional Judge of Calcutta High Court in June,1976 and elevated to permanent judge in December,1976. [2]
Ray was nominated as judge at Supreme Court of India in 1985 and became second Dalit judge to hold such position after A. Vardarajan. [3] [4] He was associated with Indian National Congress since his college days and in 1957 West Bengal legislative assembly election he fought from Baruipur constituency but lost to Gangadhar Naskar of CPI. Jyoti Basu was an Indian Marxist theorist,communist activist,and politician. He was one of the most prominent leaders of Communist movement in India. Jogendranath Mandal emerged as a prominent figure among the architects of the nascent state of Pakistan. He served as the inaugural Minister of Law and Labour,as well as the subsequent Minister of Commonwealth and Kashmir Affairs. Within the Interim Government of India,he had previously held the portfolio of law. Distinguished as a leader representing the Scheduled Castes (Dalits),Mandal vehemently opposed the partition of Bengal in 1947. His rationale rested on the apprehension that a divided Bengal would render Dalits vulnerable to the predominant Muslim majority in East Bengal (Pakistan) and subject them to the dominance of the majority caste-Hindus in West Bengal (India). Eventually opting to maintain his base in East Pakistan,Mandal aspired for the welfare of the Dalits and assumed a ministerial role in Pakistan as the Minister of Law and Labour. However,a few years subsequent to the partition,he relocated to India,tendering his resignation to Liaquat Ali Khan,the then Prime Minister of Pakistan,citing the perceived anti-Dalit bias within the Pakistani administration.
Ram Chandra Dome is an Indian politician and a Politburo member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). A doctor by profession,he was elected to the Lok Sabha for seven consecutive terms. He is the first member from the scheduled castes to be inducted in the politburo. He has also been serving as the national general secretary of Dalit Shoshan Mukti Mancha,CPI(M)'s frontal organisation for backward castes,since 2018.
