Music video

The video features then-President of the United States Barack Obama (portrayed by Iman Crosson) and former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney (portrayed by Lloyd Ahlquist) facing off in a rap battle. Romney raps first, Obama second; following four back-and-forth verses, former President Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by Peter Shukoff) interrupts the two and begins rapping against both Obama and Romney (Lincoln had previously appeared in the first season of the series, battling Chuck Norris). Lincoln proceeds to "bitch smack" the two before being carried away by an American bald eagle.

As of May 2024, the video has received over 161 million views and 1.2 million likes on YouTube and is currently the most-viewed episode of the series. [1]

Legacy

Three spiritual sequels to the battle, "Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton", [2] "Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden", [3] and "Donald Trump vs. Kamala Harris" [4] were made in correspondence with the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections respectively. Abraham Lincoln returns in the 2016 battle as a third party rapper. [5] "Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden" did not feature a third-party rapper, [6] while the 2024 battle features Theodore Roosevelt as a third-party rapper.

Reception

The video was one of the most popular viral videos of 2012 [7] and was discussed in a New York Times article. [8]

Awards and nominations

The video was nominated for "Video of the Year" at the 2013 YouTube Music Awards but lost to Girls' Generation song "I Got a Boy". [9]

Certifications

In July 2013, the song was certified Gold by the RIAA, making ERB the first YouTube channel to do so. [8] [10]

The Redskins Rule is an observed longstanding coincidence between the National Football League (NFL) game results of the Washington Commanders, formerly known as the Washington Redskins, and the results of subsequent United States presidential elections. Briefly stated, when Washington won its last home game prior to the presidential election, the party of the incumbent president retained the presidency; when Washington lost, the opposition party won. This coincidence was noted by many sports and political commentators, and held true for the first sixteen elections after the franchise first moved to Washington in 1937. The rule was first broken in 2004 and has since held true only twice.

Epic Rap Battles of History (ERB) is a YouTube web series and music project created by Peter "Nice Peter" Shukoff and Lloyd "EpicLLOYD" Ahlquist. The series pits historical and pop culture figures against one another in a rap battle format. Following an extended hiatus, the channel returned with a bonus battle in December 2018, and the sixth season debuted on April 20, 2019. As of February 23, 2023, the channel has 14.9 million subscribers and approximately 4 billion total video views.
