The Barkagarh estate was a zamindari estate situated in modern-day Jharkhand, India, in erstwhile Lohardaga district (now in Ranchi). It was established by Ani Nath Shahdeo, the son of Nagvanshi king Ram Shah in 17th century. The capital of the estate was Satranji now located in south Ranchi. [1] [2] [3]

Ani Nath Shahdeo had founded his capital at Satrangi on the bank of Subarnarekha river and built Jagannath temple in 1691.

History

The Barkagarh estate was founded by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, the son of Nagvanshi King Ram Shah in 17th century. He built the capital at Satranji near Subarnarekha river. [1] The state consist of two pargana the Udaipur and Seiri with 113 villages. [4] He built Jagannath temple in 1691. He also established a market which is now known as Hatia. [5] [6]

During 18th century Nagvanshi became vassal of East India Company. Vishwanath Shahdeo was king of Barkagarh estate during 19th century. He disliked authoritarian way of functioning of British official and forcible possession of his lands by Christian Kol tribals encouraged by the Christian missionaries. When he complaint about it to the British officials, they took no action about it.

During Rebellion of 1857, when rebels asked him to lead them and he accepted the offer. He organised a army with the assistance of nearby zamindars including Pandey Ganpat Rai, Tikait Umrao Singh, Sheikh Bhikhari, Jaimangal Singh, Nadir Ali Khan, Brij Bhusan Singh, Chama Singh, Shiva Singh, Ram Lal Singh and Bijai Ram Singh to overthrow Company rule. He fought against East India company force in Battle of Chatra in 1857 but got defeated. They escaped and continued their battle against British in Ranchi. The king of Pithoria, Jagatpal Singh assisted British against the rebels. Viswanath Shahdeo attack Jagatpal Singh in Pithuriya and battle continued for several days. [7] In the end Vishwanath Shahdeo and his allies got defeated. Later they were caught and hanged in Ranchi in 1858. The Barkagarh estate was confiscated for rebellion against company rule. [4] [8] Then British destroyed the capital of Barkagarh, forts of Satranjigarh and Hatiagarh. [7]

The wife of Viswanath Shahdeo Baneswari Kunwar fled to forest of Rani Khorha in Gumla district with her one year son Kapil Nath Shahdeo and few trusted individuals due to danger to her life and her son as She know that British can kill her and her son. She lived 12 years in exile then she demanded return of property of Barkagarh estate. British refused but they agreed to pay Rani Baneswari Kunwar Rs.30 per month from tax collected by Barkagarh property. [7]

Post Independence

Thakur Naveen Nath Shahdeo, the descendant of Thakur Vishwanath Shahdeo was the vice president of Jagannath Mandir Nyas Sammiti and the first servant of Jagannath temple. [9]

Ramgarh Raj was the major Zamindari estate in the era of the British Raj in the former Indian province of Bihar. Territories which comprised the Ramgarh Raj presently constitute districts of Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Chatra, Giridih, Koderma, and Bokaro with 3672 villages. The entire area is rich in minerals like coal and mica and falls under the Indian State of Jharkhand. The First King was Maharaja Baghdeo Singh and the last ruling king was Maharaja Kamakhya Narain Singh of this estate, until the estate was merged to the Republic of India. The revenue of the estate was about 3600000.

Vishwanath Shahdeo was the king of the Barkagarh estate and a rebel in the Indian rebellion of 1857. In 1855, he declared himself independent and defeated British forces in Hatia. He led rebels of Ramgarh Battalion in 1857. But defeated by Company forces with the help of king of Pithoria Jagatpal Singh. He was eventually caught and was hung from a tree along with his accomplices in 1858.

Pandey Ganpat Rai was a revolutionary and rebel leader in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and a chieftain in Lohardaga district of Bihar.

Lal Ranvijay Nath Shahdeo, was a lawyer, poet, writer and political activist. He was a prominent leader of the movement for a separate Jharkhand state. He was president of the Jharkhand Party. He wrote several Nagpuri poems, songs and slogans for the Jharkhand movement. At the end, the Central government of India accepted to form a new state, Jharkhand. He changed the state name Vananchal to Jharkhand after a debate with Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was the recipient of the Jharkhand Ratna Award for his contribution to the movement for a separate state of Jharkhand.

Ram Shah was Nagvanshi king in the 17th century. He succeed his brother Durjan Shah and ruled from 1640 to 1663 CE. Earlier their capital was at Khukhragarh, but later they shifted to Navratangarh. He was brother of king Durjan Shah.

Ani Nath Shahdeo was Nagvanshi king in 17th century. He was king of Barkagarh estate. He founded his capital at Satrangi near Subarnarekha river. He built Jagannath temple in 1691. He established Hat i.e. market at that place which is now known as Hatia.

Udai Pratap Nath Shahdeo, was the Nagvanshi Maharaja of Chotanagpur Zamindari estate. He donated large tracts of land to build infrastructure of Ranchi city. He built the Ratu Palace in Ranchi in 1901. He was conferred the Kaiser-i-Hind Medal for public services. He reigned for 81 years, and 74 days, the longest-reigning Indian monarch, the longest-reigning Princely State ruler and third longest verifiable reign of any monarch in history.

Jagatpal Singh was the king of Pithoria in the 19th century. He was an ally of the British East India Company. His father Jaimangal Singh and he made Pithoria a business and cultural centre. He helped the British in the suppression of the Rebellion of 1857 in Ranchi.

Chetavani ra Chungatya is a patriotic Dingal poem composed by Thakur Kesari Singh Barhath in 1903 and addressed to Maharana of Mewar, Fateh Singh, exhorting him to uphold the traditions of his lineage and to not attend the Delhi Durbar. The couplets had the desired effect on the Maharana who decided not to attend the durbar despite being present in Delhi. The work remains one of the great literary works produced during the freedom struggle. It consists of 13 stanzas or sortha (saurashtra-duha).

Jagannath Shah Deo was a Nagvanshi king in the 19th century. He succeeded Govind Nath Shah and ruled from 1822 to 1869 CE. During his reign, Kol uprising and Sepoy mutiny of 1857 happened. He was ally of British East India company. During his reign, Beniram Mehta had written the book Nagvanshavali, the genology of Nagvanshi kings in Nagpuri language which was published in 1876.
