Barker's of Geraldine is a food preservation business based in Geraldine, New Zealand. The business primarily produces fruit preserves, fruit syrups and relishes.
The company was founded in 1969 by Anthony Barker and his wife Gillian. [1] [2] The business started making elderflower wine in a converted shed on their farm in Pleasant Valley, but soon changed to creating fruit preserves. [1] By 2009 the business had grown to be purchasing around 1,000 tonnes (980 long tons; 1,100 short tons) of New Zealand fruit annually. [3] In 2007 they acquired rival relish manufacturer Anathoth Farm. [4] The business remained family owned until 2016, when a majority stake was sold to French food company Andros. [1] [5]
Barker's has won several industry awards. In 2009 the company was named the "supreme business" by the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce in their Business Excellence Awards. [3] In 2015, Barker's was named "South Canterbury's best business". [6] In August 2024 they were again named supreme winner by the Chamber of Commerce. [7]
In 2019 Barker's opened a store and café complex in Geraldine. [8] As of 2024 [update] Barker's employs 300 people, making it the largest employer in Geraldine, a small town with a population of around 3000 people. [1] [9] In April 2024 the company announced a major expansion of their factory facility in the town, that will increase the floorspace from 3,300 m2 (36,000 sq ft) to 9,200 m2 (99,000 sq ft). [10]

Pleasant Point is a small country town in southern Canterbury, New Zealand, some 19 km (12 mi) inland from Timaru, on State Highway 8. It is a service town for the surrounding farming district. One of its main attractions is the heritage railway, the Pleasant Point Museum and Railway, which operates steam locomotives and one of only two Model T Ford railcar replicas in the world. It attracts about 10,000 people a year. For almost one hundred years, the Fairlie branch line railway passed through the town. It closed on 2 March 1968, and the heritage line utilises 2.5 km (1.6 mi) of track along the branch's old route.

Alfred Cox was a 19th-century runholder and Member of the New Zealand House of Representatives. Born in New South Wales into an upper middle class military family, he was sent home to England to learn about farming. Upon returning to New South Wales, he heard about the large profits that were possible in South Canterbury and bought licences for land that he had not seen. He stocked the land, put a manager in charge and made another trip to England with his wife and their, at that time, small family. He moved to New Zealand permanently in 1857 and lived on his large farm, Raukapuka, which stretched from the sea to the foothills, and of which the homestead was located in present-day Geraldine. He sold his South Canterbury interests and moved to the Waikato, where he bought large land holdings in Hamilton and Thames. He tried to drain his swamp land and lost a lot of money with those ventures. He sold up in 1882 and moved to Christchurch, where he retired.
Pleasant Valley is a small locality near the town of Geraldine in the Canterbury Region of the South Island of New Zealand. The area is boarded by the Geraldine Downs to the north and Gapes Valley to the south. The Hae Hae Te Moana River runs through the valley.

As of December 2020, the charity delivered 9,000 meals to people every day, and redirected 100 tonnes of food away from landfills into the community per month. It was run by John and Janice Milligan, and was a member of the Global Foodbanking Network. In 2021 it was reported that Foodbank Canterbury provided food to 200,000 New Zealanders each month.
The Fairlie Bakehouse is a bakery in Fairlie, New Zealand. The bakery is most famous for producing gourmet meat pies. Popular varieties include salmon and bacon, venison and cranberry, and steak. Their most popular variety is a pork belly and apple sauce pie, with a piece of crackling on the top.
