The Battle of Blanc-Nez and Gris-Nez (18 July 1805) was a naval engagement between a combined flotilla of the Batavian Navy and French Imperial Navy led by Carel Hendrik Ver Huell and a larger British Royal Navy fleet under the command of Lord Keith during the War of the Third Coalition. Ver Huell's flotilla was able to resist several attacks from the British and successfully reached Boulogne-sur-Mer.
It intended for the Batavian Navy to take part in Napoleon's planned invasion of the United Kingdom. To this end, a large flotilla of flat-bottomed boats was built in the Batavian Republic, that had to be transported over sea to Boulogne, where the main invasion jump-off point was located. Carel Hendrik Ver Huell was selected to lead this dangerous mission as a vice-admiral. [3] In 1804, Ver Huell already had successfully brought a large Batavian flotilla from Vlissingen to Dunkirk.
In 1804, a British Royal Navy fleet under the command Sir William Sidney Smith tried to prevent this near Ostend, but a combination of excellent Batavian seamanship and French artillery fire from the shore caused Smith to retreat. Napoleon was impressed and wrote to Ver Huell: "You reminded me, that you are of the blood of the Tromps [lower-alpha 1] and De Ruyters." The feat earned Ver Huell the membership of the Légion d'honneur as the first non-Frenchman, and caused the Batavian government to make him vice-admiral and minister of the navy. [4] [5] He also was appointed commander of the right wing of the Flottille de Boulogne, which formed an important part of the larger fleet that was intended to invade Britain. [6]
First, however, he received orders to sail his ships from Dunkirk to Ambleteuse, a port not far from Boulogne. Ver Huell set sail on 17 July 1805 with a flotilla of 4 French prams and 32 Batavian gunboats. A British Royal Navy fleet consisting of 15 warships, which was cruising nearby, attacked the flotilla. After a fierce engagement, the Franco-Batavian flotilla, again supported by French artillery on shore, repulsed the British attack and around 11:00 they were forced to retreat. The battle however also forced Ver Huell's flotilla to anchor in the port of Calais. A number of Batavian vessels, which remained at Dunkirk, now joined the rest of the flotilla without danger. In the morning of the next day, however, Ver Huell's flotilla was again attacked by 19 Royal Navy warships, including two ships of the line and a number of frigates, corvettes and bomb ships, but the British again were forced to withdraw. Ver Huell was however forced to leave several vessels behind for repairs. [7]
On 18 July at 15:00, Ver Huell's flotilla, which consisted of 21 Batavian gunboats and 3 French prams, finally set sail from Calais. Also accompanying the flotilla as an observer was Louis-Nicolas Davout, who had joined the flotilla was in Calais. Ver Huell aboard the Heemskerk and his flotilla, came into contact with a British fleet led by Lord Keith consisting of 45 warships in between the capes of Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris Nez around 17:00. Exactly at this moment, Ver Huell sailed around Blanc-Nez at a point where the depth of the coast made it impossible for the French land batteries to support his ships. [8]
The British, who had been on the lookout for the flotilla, was much stronger than Ver Huell's ships, which had fewer guns and fewer vessels at their disposal. They subsequently initiated a full attack, and several British ships soon pressed close to the Franco-Batavian flotilla but were forced to move out of range. the British were therefore unable to prevent the Franco-Batavian flotilla from continuing its course towards Griz Nez. In order to approach the extreme corner of the cape, it was necessary for Ver Huell's ships to move further out to sea, which exposed them to more fire from the British ships, who could now aim their guns at a shorter distance, sometimes within pistol range. In addition, the cape had to be bypassed, a maneuver that brought every ship of the flotilla within range of the fire of the entire British fleet. [9] The small Batavian ships, however, offered little surface area for British gunners while the larger Royal Navy warships provided a much easier target. [2]
Despite the heavy fire, Ver Huell's contingent reached Griz Nez in good order. The British subsequently regrouped their ships and aimed their guns at a point where every vessel of the flotilla would have to pass. Every ship in Keith's fleet, a gunshot away from the cape, took up a position. One section tried to encircle the Franco-Batavian vanguard, while another shot at Ver Huell's flotilla from the side and tried to cut off its path. Despite heavy British fire, the leading gunboat, which Ver Huell was commanding, sailed around the cape without issue. Because Ver Huell had ensured that the order of battle of his flotilla was very tight, so that it could not be cut off, the British were unable to prevent the Franco-Batavian flotilla from reaching the coast safely, and it eventually anchored between Audresselles and Ambleteuse. After one last British attack on the Batavian gunboats, the French coastal batteries, now in range, managed to force them to head out back to sea. Around 20:00 the battle was over. [10]
With the trip around Cape Griz Nez, another Batavian flotilla, of 84 vessels, was also able to make the trip from the port of Dunkirk to Amblateuse unscathed. Ver Huell was showered with praise in France. In the Batavian Republic however, the victory was barely celebrated. [11] Despite this feat, events elsewhere meant that the planned invasion of Britain was ultimately called off. [12]
Cap Gris-Nez is a cape located in Audinghen, a commune of the Pas-de-Calais département in northern France.
HMS Leda, launched in 1800, was the lead ship of a successful class of forty-seven British Royal Navy 38-gun sailing frigates. Leda's design was based on the French Hébé, which the British had captured in 1782. Leda was wrecked at the mouth of Milford Haven in 1808, Captain Honeyman was exonerated of all blame, as it was a pilot error.
Napoleon's planned invasion of the United Kingdom at the start of the War of the Third Coalition, although never carried out, was a major influence on British naval strategy and the fortification of the coast of South East England. In 1796 the French had already tried to invade Ireland in order to destabilise the United Kingdom or as a stepping-stone to Great Britain. The first French Army of England had gathered on the Channel coast in 1798, but an invasion of England was sidelined by Napoleon's concentration on the campaigns in Egypt and against Austria, and shelved in 1802 by the Peace of Amiens. Building on planning for mooted invasions under France's ancien régime in 1744, 1759, and 1779, preparations began again in earnest soon after the outbreak of war in 1803, and were finally called off in 1805, before the Battle of Trafalgar.
In the Vlieter incident on 30 August 1799, a squadron of the Batavian Navy, commanded by Rear-Admiral Samuel Story, surrendered to the British navy. The incident occurred during the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland. It occurred in the tidal trench between Texel and the mainland that was known as De Vlieter, near Wieringen.
Carel Hendrik, comte Ver Huell was a Dutch naval officer and politician. He married Maria Johanna de Bruyn on 22 February 1789 at Hummelo, and had three sons with her.
HMS Basilisk was a Bloodhound-class gun-brig built by Randall in Rotherhithe and launched in 1801. She served briefly at the end of the French Revolutionary Wars, with most of her service occurring during the Napoleonic Wars protecting convoys from privateers, conducting close-inshore surveillance and taking enemy coastal shipping. She was sold for breaking in 1815.
During the period of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, there were two or three vessels known as His Majesty's hired armed cutter Active that served the British Royal Navy. The reason for the uncertainty in the number is that the size of the vessels raises the possibility that the first and second may have been the same vessel.
Aegidius van Braam was a Dutch naval officer who attained the rank of vice-admiral. When the Dutch Republic was overrun by French Revolutionary troops in 1795, he remained loyal to the House of Orange-Nassau and fled to England. Following the restoration in 1814, he was repatriated by King William I and received the hereditary noble title of jonkheer.
The Batavian Navy was the navy of the Batavian Republic which was a continuation of the Staatse vloot of the Dutch Republic. Though thoroughly reorganized after the Batavian Revolution of 1795, the navy embarked on several naval construction programs which, at least on paper, made it a serious rival of the Royal Navy during the War of the Second Coalition. However, the Capitulation of Saldanha Bay, the Battle of Camperdown and the Vlieter incident showed that the navy did not measure up to that expectation. Nevertheless, the reorganizations proved to be durable, when the Batavian Republic was succeeded by the Kingdom of Holland, and later, the Kingdom of the Netherlands which makes the present-day Royal Netherlands Navy expected to trace its ancestry through it.
The Capture of the Dutch fleet at Den Helder on the night of 23 January 1795 presents a rare occurrence of an interaction between warships and cavalry, in which a French Revolutionary Hussar regiment came close to a Dutch fleet frozen at anchor in the Nieuwediep, just east of the town of Den Helder. After some of the Hussars had approached across the frozen Nieuwediep, the French cavalry negotiated that all 14 Dutch warships would remain at anchor. A capture of ships by horsemen is an extremely rare feat in military history.
HMS Harpy was a Royal Navy Diligence-class brig-sloop, launched in 1796 and sold in 1817. She was the longest lived vessel of her class, and the most widely travelled. She served in both the battle of Copenhagen and the British invasion of Java, took part in several actions, one of which won for her crew a clasp to the Naval General Service Medal, and captured numerous privateers. The Navy sold her in 1817.
The Staaten Generaal was a Dutch 74-gun third rate ship of the line which served in the Dutch States Navy and the Batavian Navy. The order to construct the ship was given by the Admiralty of the Meuse. The ship was commissioned in 1786.
The capitulation of Saldanha Bay was the surrender to the British of a Batavian expeditionary force sent to recapture the Dutch Cape Colony in 1796. In 1794, early in the War of the First Coalition, French troops overran the Dutch Republic which then became a French client state, the Batavian Republic. Great Britain was concerned by the threat that the Cape Colony posed to its trade routes to British India. It therefore sent an expeditionary force that landed at Simon's Town in June 1795 and forced the surrender of the colony in a short campaign. British Vice-Admiral Sir George Elphinstone, then reinforced the garrison and stationed a naval squadron at the Cape Colony to protect it.
HMS Orestes was a mercantile vessel, possible Ann, that the Royal Navy purchased in 1803. She had a short operational career; her crew burnt her in 1805 after she ran aground to prevent the enemy from capturing her.
HMS Bustler was launched at Topsham in 1805. The French captured her in 1808 when she stranded and attempts to set fire to her failed. The French Navy took her into service as Bustler. The British recaptured her in 1813 when attempts by her crew to scuttle her failed. The Royal Navy did not take her into service and her subsequent disposition is currently obscure.
HMS Sparkler was launched in 1804 at Brightlingsea. Lieutenant James S.A.Dennis commissioned her in August 1804 for the North Sea.
Philips van der Goes was a Dutch military officer during the 17th and 18th centuries. He took part in the Nine Years' War and the War of the Spanish Succession and ended his military career at the rank of vice-admiral.
The Royal Navy purchased the mercantile brig Jane in 1804 and renamed her HMS Watchful. Jane had been launched in 1795 at Norfolk. In 1805 she participated in several actions against French and Dutch vessels on their way to Boulogne. Watchful also participated in the siege of Cadiz in 1810–1811. The Navy sold her in 1814.
Quirijn Maurits Rudolph Ver Huell was a Dutch naval officer, writer, painter, watercolorist and entomologist. He played an important role in the suppression of the insurrection of Pattimura on Saparua in 1817. He was the captain of the Dutch ship of the line Zr. Ms. Admiraal Evertsen when that ship foundered near Diego Garcia in 1819 with an important cargo of irreplaceable botanical specimens on board, that had been gathered by the founder of the Bogor Botanical Gardens, Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt. He was something of a polymath, who earned a reputation as a naturalist and in particular as an illustrator of works of botany, zoology and entomology. He was the last director of the renowned naval shipyard of Rotterdam. He received several high decorations, among which that of Knight 3rd class of the Military Order of William. He played an important role in the social and cultural life of Rotterdam. He was the father of Alexander Willem Maurits Carel Ver Huell.
Arnold Adriaan Buyskess was a Dutch naval officer, who also served as a Commissioner-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1816 to 1819. Before that he had been Daendels lt.-Governor-General on Java from 1808 to 1809. He successfully led the punitive expedition against the insurgents in the Moluccas in 1817.
