Bepin Behari Ganguly Street, or B.B. Ganguly Street, formerly known as Bow Bazar Street or Bowbazar Street, is an east-west road in Central Kolkata, capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It passes through Bowbazar area and connects Baithakkhana Market (Sealdah) and Sealdah Station with Bentinck Street/Rabindra Sarani crossing (Lalbazar) via Amherst Street crossing, Nirmal Chandra Street/College Street crossing and Central Avenue crossing. West of Bentinck Street crossing, B.B. Ganguly Street becomes Lalbazar Street. [1] This road's name is a tribute for Bepin Behari Ganguly, a famous freedom-fighter and politician of India.
The multitude of commuters who deport train at Sealdah Station (from Kolkata Suburban Railway) use this road to reach Lalbazar and B.B.D. Bagh (the central business district of the city) easily. The eastern portion of the road (just after its starting from Sealdah) is very congested due to the location of Baithakkhana Market (a vegetable wholesale market). The road is one-way, traffic runs from the direction of Sealdah towards Lalbazar and B.B.D. Bagh.
During July 2019, as tunneling work of East West Metro Railway was being undertaken, due to unforeseen or faulty soil testing, a part of underground tunneling affected the lad character of the Bowbazaar area adjacent to BB Ganguly street. This caused problems for the gold merchants of B B Ganguly area as their shops were affected badly. [2]
The Kolkata Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Kolkata and the Kolkata Metropolitan Region in West Bengal, India. Opened in 1984, it was the first operational rapid transit system in India. Besides, it's also the second busiest and fourth-longest metro network in the country. As of October 2024, it has four operational lines: the 32.13 km (19.96 mi) long Line 1, or 'Blue Line' from Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash, 14.1 km (8.8 mi) long Line 2, or 'Green Line' from Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan, 7.75 km (4.82 mi) long Line 3, or 'Purple Line' from Joka to Majerhat and 5.4 km (3.4 mi) long Line 6, or 'Orange Line' from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay for a total of 59.38 km (36.90 mi). Two other lines are in various phases of construction and planning. The system has a mix of underground, at-grade, and elevated stations using both broad-gauge and standard-gauge tracks. It operates on a 750 V DC Third rail system. Trains operate between 06:55 and 22:30 IST and the fares range from ₹5 to ₹50.
Esplanade is a neighbourhood of Central Kolkata, located at the heart of city with being the city's Central business district. This is a conventional esplanade because the Ganga river (Ganges), also known as Hooghly river, flows nearby and it is adjacent to the large fields of Maidan extending up to Fort William.
Chittaranjan Avenue, more commonly C.R. Avenue, a principal north-south thoroughfare in Central-North Kolkata. It starts from Beadon Street crossing in the north and ends at Chowringhee Road-Bentinck Street Junction (Esplanade) in the south. The road is renamed after Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, a nationalist politician and freedom-fighter of India. North of Beadon Street crossing, Chittaranjan Avenue becomes Jatindra Mohan Avenue.
Tiretta Bazaar, also known as Chinatown, is a neighborhood near Lalbazar in Central Kolkata. It is usually called Old China Market. The locality was once home to 20,000 ethnic Chinese Indian nationals, but now the population has dropped to approximately 2,000. Most of the Hakka Chinese people in the area moved closer to Tangra. The traditional occupation of the Chinese Indian community in Kolkata had been working in the nearby tanning industry as well as in Chinese restaurants. The area is still noted for the Chinese restaurants where many people flock to taste traditional Chinese and Indian Chinese cuisine.
Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) was a state-run company that operated trams and buses in and around Kolkata in West Bengal, India. The Kolkata tram is the only operating tramway in India and is the oldest electric tram in India, operating since 1902.

Line 2 or Green Line is a rapid transit line of the Kolkata Metro in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It currently consists of two distinctly operational sections between Sector-V to Sealdah Metro, and Esplanade to Howrah Maidan by going underneath the Hooghly River, with an eastern extension planned for Teghoria. It will cover a distance of 22 km (14 mi) and consist of 17 stations from Teghoria (Haldiram) in the east to Howrah Maidan in the west, of which it will consist of 11 elevated and 6 underground stations, and the operational section consists of 6 elevated and 6 underground stations, with a total distance of 13.1 km (8.1 mi). It is expected to derive a very high ridership, since it will connect India's two largest commuter railway and long-distance railway terminals, Howrah and Sealdah, along with two of its largest business districts, BBD Bagh and Salt Lake Sector V. At present, more than 100,000 passengers commute through the line every day, and this figure is expected to go up to 1 million after it gets fully completed by 2035. It will also connect the industrial hub of Kolkata, i.e., Howrah and the IT hub of Kolkata, i.e., Salt Lake Sector-V. It connects Line 1 at Esplanade and will eventually connect Lines 3 and 6.

The Kolkata Tram System, is a LRT that serves Kolkata, the capital city of the Indian state of West Bengal, operated by West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) after Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) was merged with WBTC. Being started in 1873 Kolkata tram is the oldest operating tram network in the world. Being electrified in 1902, Calcutta became the first Asian City with electric tramway. The Kolkata Tram is the only tram system operating now in India. With the help of periodic negligence, the Government of West Bengal had formed systematic initiatives to suspend the entire tram network from the city and sell properties. However, an apolitical organization named Calcutta Tram Users Association (CTUA) was formed in 2016 to advocate in favor of Kolkata's tram system. The network initially had up to 37 lines in the 1960s, but has gradually reduced over the years with only two lines currently operating due to financial struggles, poor maintenance, low ridership, addition of road flyovers, expansion of the Kolkata Metro, slow tram speed and perceptions that the trams are outdated and occupy too much road space. East West Metro Tunnel is an underwater river tunnel of Kolkata Metro in Kolkata, West Bengal. The river tunnel is constructed underneath Hooghly River. It is the biggest underwater river tunnel of India, which is made for metro rail service. The East West Metro Tunnel length is 10.8 km (6.7 mi) and width is 5.5 metres. A 520 m stretch of the tracks goes through a tunnel under the Hooghly River. The roof of the tunnel is about 30 metres from the ground level. The tunnel was completed in 2021. The tunnel is used by East West Metro Line for metro rail service by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation and it was constructed by Afcons Infrastructure.
