Shakespeare Sarani (earlier Theatre Road) is a street running in the central business district of Kolkata, India, from Park Circus to Chowringhee Road (Birla Planetarium). It was renamed on 24 April 1964 after William Shakespeare, to mark the fourth birth centenary of the legendary playwright. [1] It is considered to be a high street of Kolkata with many commercial establishments, offices, shops and restaurants situated by the road. [1] [2] It intersects with other important roads in the CBD like Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road, Camac Street, Loudon Street and Rawdon Street. Few other roads like, Little Russel Street, Wood Street, Picasso Bithi & Lord Sinha Road criss-crosses or merge into Shakespeare Sarani from North or South. West of Birla Planetarium crossing, Shakespeare Sarani becomes Queen's Way. [3]

History

At the corner of Chowringhee Road and Theatre Road was the Theatre of Calcutta from 1813 to 1839. It was burnt down by fire and never rebuilt. [4]

Police district

Shakespere Sarani police station is part of the South division of Kolkata Police. Located at 34A, Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata-700017, it has jurisdiction over the police district which is bordered on the north from the south-west corner of the junction of Park Street, Outram Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road (old Chowringhee Road), then crossing Jawaharlal Nehru Road to the south east corner of the junction of the Park Street and Jawaharlal Nehru Road and thence eastward by the southern limits of Park Street to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road, then crossing Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road up to the south-east corner of the junction of Park Street and Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road. It is bordered on the east from the south-east corner of the junction of Park Street and Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road (old Lower Circular Road), then southward by the eastern limits of the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road up to the south-east corner of the junction of Beck Bagan Row, Circus Avenue and Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road. It is bordered on the south from the south-east corner of the junction of Beck Bagan Row, Circus Avenue and Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road (old Lower Circular Road), thence westward by the southern limits of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road to Jawaharlal Nehru Road (old Chowringhee Road), then crossing Jawaharlal Nehru Road up to the south-west corner of the junction of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road. It is bordered on the west from the south-west corner of the junction of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road (old Lower Circular Road) and Jawaharlal Nehru Road (old Chowringhee Road). Thence north-ward by the western limits of Jawaharlal Nehru Road up to the south-west corner of the junction of Park Street, Outram Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road. [5]

The Kolkata Tram System, is a LRT that serves Kolkata, the capital city of the Indian state of West Bengal, operated by West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) after Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) was merged with WBTC. Being started in 1873 Kolkata tram is the oldest operating tram network in the world. Being electrified in 1902, Calcutta became the first Asian City with electric tramway. The Kolkata Tram is the only tram system operating now in India. With the help of periodic negligence, the Government of West Bengal had formed systematic initiatives to suspend the entire tram network from the city and sell properties. However, an apolitical organization named Calcutta Tram Users Association (CTUA) was formed in 2016 to advocate in favor of Kolkata's tram system. The network initially had up to 37 lines in the 1960s, but has gradually reduced over the years with only two lines currently operating due to financial struggles, poor maintenance, low ridership, addition of road flyovers, expansion of the Kolkata Metro, slow tram speed and perceptions that the trams are outdated and occupy too much road space. Kolkata Christmas Festival, held every December in on Park Street, Kolkata, is one of the largest dedicated Christmas carnivals in India. The themed lighting starts from St Xavier's College and ends at Jawaharlal Nehru Road. This has been extended in recent years at both ends: up to the Mullick Bazar crossing on Park Street, and up to St Paul's Cathedral on Cathedral Road, an offshoot of Jawaharlal Nehru Road. Another offshoot of celebrations and lighting has been extended to Vardaan Market on Camac Street. This themed lighting is designed by artisans from the nearby town of Chandannagar.
