Bidisha Mamata [3] (born Bidisha Bandyopadhyay; 29 July 1978), known professionally as Bidisha, is a British TV broadcaster and presenter specialising in international affairs and human rights, political analysis, the arts, and culture. She is also a multimedia artist, making films and stills.
Bidisha began writing professionally for style magazines such as i-D , Dazed and Confused , and the NME , at the age of 14, and published her first novel at 18. [4] She writes for The Guardian and The Observer [5] and works as a TV and radio critic and presenter for the BBC, Sky News, ITN, Channel 5 and CNN.
Bidisha went to school at Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls in Elstree, Hertfordshire. [1] In 1999, she graduated in English Language and Literature from St Edmund Hall at the University of Oxford. [2] She then studied at the London School of Economics, where she gained an MSc in Moral and Political Philosophy and Economic History.[ citation needed ]
Bidisha began writing for arts magazines i-D , Oyster , Volume, Dazed and Confused , and the NME at 15, after launching a style fanzine at the age of 14, influenced by the riot grrrl subculture. In 1995, at the age of 16, Bidisha signed a £15,000 book deal with HarperCollins. Her first novel, Seahorses, was published two years later, during her first year at university. [6] During this time she also had regular opinion columns in The Big Issue magazine, The Daily Telegraph and the Thursday edition of The Independent newspaper. Bidisha's second novel, the thriller Too Fast to Live, was published when she was 21. Her third book, Venetian Masters – a travel memoir – was published in February 2008. [7] She was a contributing editor of the women's literary magazine Sibyl and the style magazine 2nd Generation, and has written for The Guardian , the Financial Times , Mslexia , The Observer , the New Statesman , and arts magazine The List. International affairs were the subject of Venetian Masters (2008), which focused on northern Italy, and Beyond the Wall (2012), a work of reportage. In 2013, she became a Fellow of the International Reporting Project run by Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Her role is to focus on international health development issues as part of a global network of reporters. [9] Her fifth book, Asylum and Exile: The Hidden Voices of London, is based on her long term outreach work with asylum seekers and refugees. [10] [11]
Bidisha was one of the judges for the 2009 Orange Prize for Fiction, and was announced as one of the judges of the 2010 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. [12] She is a patron of the SI Leeds Literary Prize for unpublished fiction by Black and Asian women in the UK. [13] [14] Bidisha is a trustee of the Booker Prize Foundation. [15]
In parallel with her writing, Bidisha has developed a career as a radio and TV arts critic and presenter. [16] She is a regular guest on The Big Questions and Sunday Morning Live (BBC One), and also appeared as a regular panellist on Newsnight Review (BBC Two). For BBC Radio 4 she has contributed regularly to and presented Saturday Review , Front Row , Archive on Four , Heart and Soul and Woman's Hour . [17] She was one of the regular presenters of BBC Radio 3's flagship arts programme, Night Waves .
On the BBC World Service, she was a guest presenter of the books programme The Word , and was the regular presenter for The Strand . [18] For BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, she has presented documentaries on Carl Jung, Iris Murdoch, [19] the role of text in art (in Texting Andy Warhol) and The Countertenor. [20] On television, she presented BBC Four's Secret Life of Books series edition on Jane Eyre [21] and the Archive on Four documentary Mustn't Grumble, on complaining. [22]
In 2017, she directed the seven-minute solo project An Impossible Poison, which was commissioned by the arts organisation Speaking Volumes and premiered in Berlin in November 2017. [23] Her next visual project was a series of video shorts called the Aurora series, of which the first is Aurora: All is Well [24] (October 2020).

Rosemary Elizabeth "Posy" Simmonds MBE, FRSL is a British newspaper cartoonist, and writer and illustrator of both children's books and graphic novels. She is best known for her long association with The Guardian, for which she drew the series Gemma Bovery (2000) and Tamara Drewe (2005–06), both later published as books. Her style gently satirises the English middle classes and in particular those of a literary bent. Both Gemma Bovery and Tamara Drew feature a "doomed heroine", much in the style of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century gothic romantic novel, to which they often allude, but with an ironic, modernist slant.

Her novel Girl, Woman, Other jointly won the Booker Prize in 2019 alongside Margaret Atwood's The Testaments, making her the first Black woman to win the Booker. Evaristo is Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University London and President of the Royal Society of Literature, the second woman and the first black person to hold the role since it was founded in 1820.
Wena Poon is a lawyer and novelist based in the United States. She writes English-language fiction. Her work has been seen by academics in the UK, US and Singapore as representative of the transnationalism of her generation.
Maria Joan Hyland is an ex-lawyer and the author of three novels: How the Light Gets In (2004), Carry Me Down (2006) and This is How (2009). Hyland is a lecturer in creative writing in the Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester. Carry Me Down (2006) was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and won the Hawthornden Prize and the Encore Prize.

Wasafiri is a quarterly British literary magazine covering international contemporary writing. Founded in 1984, the magazine derives its name from a Swahili word meaning "travellers" that is etymologically linked with the Arabic word "safari". The magazine holds that many of those who created the literatures in which it is particularly interested "...have all in some sense been cultural travellers either through migration, transportation or else, in the more metaphorical sense of seeking an imagined cultural 'home'." Funded by the Arts Council England, Wasafiri is "a journal of post-colonial literature that pays attention to the wealth of Black and diasporic writers worldwide. It is Britain's only international magazine for Black British, African, Asian and Caribbean literatures."
Marina Salandy-Brown FRSA, Hon. FRSL, is a Trinidadian journalist, broadcaster and cultural activist. She was formerly an editor and Senior Manager in Radio and News and Current Affairs programmes with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in London, one of the BBC's few top executives from an ethnic minority background. She is the founder and inaugural director of the NGC Bocas Lit Fest, held annually in Trinidad and Tobago since 2011, "the biggest literary festival in the Anglophone Caribbean", and of the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature. She was also co-founder of the Hollick Arvon Caribbean Writers Prize.
Shahidha Bari is a British academic, critic and broadcaster in the fields of literature, philosophy and art. She is a professor at the University of the Arts London based at London College of Fashion. She is a host of the topical arts television programme Inside Culture on BBC Two, standing in for Mary Beard, one of the presenters of the BBC Radio 4 arts and ideas programme Free Thinking, and an occasional presenter of BBC Radio 4's Front Row.

In the words of the Open University, from which Jaggi received an honorary doctorate in 2012, she "has had a transformative influence in the last 25 years in extending the map of international writing today". Jaggi has been a contributor to a wide range of publications including The Guardian, Financial Times, The Independent, The Literary Review, The Times Literary Supplement, The New York Review of Books, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, New Statesman, Wasafiri, Index on Censorship, and Newsweek, and is particularly known for her profiles of writers, artists, film-makers, musicians and others. She is also a broadcaster and presenter on radio and television. Jaggi is the niece of actor and food writer Madhur Jaffrey.
Kaite O'Reilly FRSL is UK-based playwright, author and dramaturge of Irish descent. She has won multiple awards for her work, including the Ted Hughes Award (2011) for her version of Aeschylus's tragedy The Persians. O'Reilly's plays have been performed at venues across the UK and at the Edinburgh Festival. Her work has also been shown internationally including in Europe Australia, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. O'Reilly openly identifies as a disabled artist and has spoken of the importance of "identifying socially and politically as disabled" to her work. In 2023, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
