Bienal de Quadrinhos de Curitiba is a Brazilian comic book festival held since 2011 in Curitiba.
In 2011, the event Gibicon nº 0 ("Gibi" is an informal way of calling comic books in Brazil) took place, with the subtitle "Curitiba's International Comics Convention", organized by Quadrinhofilia Produções Artísticas with Znort Ilustradores. They were invited by Curitiba's Cultural Foundation. There were several events, such as meetings, debates, lectures and exhibitions, held in different places in Curitiba (Gibiteca de Curitiba, Museum of Photography, Memorial de Curitiba, Goethe-Institut, Alliance française, Instituto Cervantes, Sesc Paço da Liberdade and Jokers Pub), with 32 Brazilian guests and seven international guests: Hervé Bourhis, Fabio Civitelli, Lucio Filippucci, Jens Hardes and Salvador Sanz. The event, which was made as a pilot project in anticipation of the 30th anniversary of Gibiteca (which would take place in 2012), had as main objective to assess the receptivity of the local public to this kind of event. Gibicon reached about 10 thousand visitors in the "test" edition, so the event became regular from 2012 with Gibicon nº 1, this time effectively celebrating the 30th anniversary of Gibiteca de Curitiba. The event, whose periodicity was defined as a biennial for the subsequent editions, continued to be held in several locations around the city and increased the number of guests and related activities. The main activity was the exhibition Tesouros da Grafipar, in honor of Grafipar, a historic publishing house from Paraná. [4] [5] [3]
In 2014, Gibicon nº 2 stopped being held in several places, concentrating its activities in the Municipal Museum of Art (MuMA). Exhibitions were held in honor of artists Solda (who also won the first edition of the Claudio Seto Award, started this year), David Lloyd, Kim Jung Gi, among others. This edition reached 20 thousand visitors and had more than 30 booths, in addition to several tables of independent artists. [6] [7] [8]
With the end of the partnership between the event's organizers and Quadrinhofilia, which owned the name "Gibicon", the event was officially renamed the Bienal de Quadrinhos de Curitiba (Curitiba Comics Biennial) and had a mixed curatorship, formed by Mitie Taketani (owner of Itiban Comic Shop), by journalist Heitor Pitombo and by comic artists André Caliman, Lobo and Rafael Coutinho, in addition to consulting with Ibraim Roberson and Antônio Éder. With a project approved by the Rouanet Law, this edition received about 30 thousand people and brought as a novelty the availability of a space of 1,000 m2 in three areas of the event for the Comics Fair, a space destined for artists, publishers and exhibitors to present and sell comics and related works. In addition, the following year, Curitiba's Cultural Foundation made official the intention to intersperse the Bienal with the event Traços Curitibanos, which is focused only on local artists and whose first edition, in 2015, also took place at MuMA. In 2018, the Bienal had as its theme "The city in comics" (with the proposal to discuss the relationship between the urban environment and the body in different cultures) and curated by Mitie Taketani and journalist and translator Érico Assis. With more than 300 exhibitors and more than 60 invited artists, the event received about 30 thousand people. One of the main highlights was the exhibition of works of visual arts by architect Key Imaguire Jr., produced since the 1970s but until then unknown to the public. The works were presented at the insistence of Mitie, who had met the production when she invited the architect to be honored at the event. [13] [14] [15] [16] [17]
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of the Bienal was postponed to the following year, but an online edition of the event was still held in August with similar characteristics to the in-person event, with exhibitions, lectures, workshops, chats and debates (all carried out with the support of the event's social networks and digital platforms such as Zoom). The event was curated once again by Mitie, this time with the comic artist Fabio Zimbres and with the special curatorship of the musician and producer Vadeco Schettin on account of the event's theme: "Comics & music: the relationship and the mutual influences of these two forms of artistic expression". In 2021, however, with the maintenance of restrictions for face-to-face events in Curitiba, the sixth edition of the Bienal was online again, but this time during five months, from August to December. It had the same theme as the 2020 online edition, "Comics & Music". In addition to having 140 national and international artists invited, the event also brought the launch of an unprecedented collection with works by Luiz Gê, artist honored in the edition, an online comics fair, lectures, debates, workshops, co-creation of works and actions aimed at to the public of cities in the metropolitan region of Curitiba. In 2013, the then Gibicon received two of the most important Brazilian comics awards: the Jayme Cortez Trophy (which is part of Prêmio Angelo Agostini and aims to reward great contributions to Brazilian comics) and the Troféu HQ Mix for Best Event. [23] [24] [25]
In 2020, the Bienal was again awarded at the Troféu HQ Mix, this time as Best Exhibition for "Angola Janga de Marcelo D'salette em Angola/Moçambique". The traveling exhibition was part of the "Brasil em Quadrinhos" project, a partnership between the Bienal and Itamaraty, and took the works of comics artist Marcelo D'Salete (especially the graphic novel Angola Janga) to Angola and Mozambique the previous year. In 2014, Bienal de Quadrinhos de Curitiba started the Prêmio Claudio Seto (Claudio Seto Award), in honor of the comic artist of the same name. Artists are awarded for their body of work, receiving the Maria Erótica Trophy (a famous character by Claudio Seto) and winning exhibitions, lectures and debates on the life and work of those honored. The Pedreira Paulo Leminski is a 25,000 capacity outdoor concert venue located in Curitiba, Brazil. It was partly named after Paulo Leminski, a twentieth century Brazilian writer, and because it served as the Municipal Pedreira, or rock quarry. Located in the neighborhood of Pilarzinho, the site is about 103,500 metres long, its stage is around 480m², and it is surrounded by a rock wall thirty meters high. It was first opened in 1990.

Mario Cau is a Brazilian comics artist. One of most prominent works is the webcomic Terapia, published from 2011 to 2018, about the psychotherapy sessions of a nameless boy. This webcomic was nominated as best webcomic in Troféu HQ Mix since 2012, winning in 2012 and 2014. Mario also won the 2013 Prêmio Jabuti in "best illustration" and "best school related book" categories by comics adaptation of classic book Dom Casmurro.
André Diniz is a Brazilian comics artist. He began working with comics in 1994 with the fanzine Grandes Enigmas da Humanidade, which had a circulation of 5,000 copies.
Prêmio Angelo Agostini, sometimes also called Troféu Angelo Agostini, is the most traditional comics award in Brazil. It was created in 1985 by the Associação dos Quadrinhistas e Caricaturistas do Estado de São Paulo (AQC-ESP), which still organizes the event today.

Unflattening is a graphic novel by artist and researcher Nick Sousanis that was originally the first dissertation from Columbia University to be written in a comic book format. The book was published by Harvard University Press in April 2015 and won the 2015 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize, taking top honor as book of the year. The Brazilian edition of the book, won the 2018 Troféu HQ Mix in category "best theoretical book".
Master of National Comics is one of the categories of Prêmio Angelo Agostini, the most traditional Brazilian award dedicated to comics that has been held since 1985 by Associação dos Quadrinhistas e Caricaturistas do Estado de São Paulo (AQC-ESP).
Eugenio Colonnese was an Italian-born Brazilian comic artist. Son of a Brazilian mother and Italian father, Colonnese moved to Argentina as a child, where he began his career in 1949, working for several Argentine magazines. He moved to Brazil in 1964. Three years later, he created the Estúdio D-Arte with Rodolfo Zalla, with whom he produced several comic books for several Brazilian publishers. In 1967, Colonnese created his main characters: Mirza, a Mulher-Vampira and O Morto do Pântano, which, although they have similarities, respectively, to Vampirella and Swamp Thing, were created some years before these characters.Colonnese worked mainly with horror comics, but he also worked with other genres and did illustration for educational and advertising comics. In 1985, he was awarded the Prêmio Angelo Agostini for Master of National Comics, an award that aims to honor artists who have dedicated themselves to Brazilian comics for at least 25 years.
Cláudio Seto was a Brazilian journalist, visual artist, comic artist, poet, photographer, cultural animator and bonsai artist. Of Japanese descent, at age nine he went to study at a Zen monastery in Japan, where he took the opportunity to visit Osamu Tezuka's studio on weekends. When he returned to Brazil in the 1960s, he was hired by Edrel publishing house, where he published stories about samurai and ninja, who were still little known by Brazilians. Seto is considered the forerunner of the use of the manga style in Brazilian comics and his best-known character was O Samurai. In the 1970s, he moved to Curitiba to work at the Grafipar publishing house, which had hired some of the best Brazilian comic artists of the time. In 1988, he was awarded with the Prêmio Angelo Agostini for Master of National Comics, an award that aims to honor artists who have dedicated themselves to Brazilian comics for at least 25 years.
Fernando Ikoma is a Brazilian painter and comic book artist of Japanese descent. He moved to Curitiba at the age of 14, where he started working as an apprentice shop window designer. At 19, Ikoma started to work with comics in search of a better financial situation. He worked as a comic artist at EDREL, EBAL and Abril publishing houses. His main creation in the comics was the character Fikom, published by EDREL in the 1970s and whose adventures took place in the world of dreams, a place where his alter ego, the ugly Mukifa, could play the role of a beautiful hero. He also wrote the book A Técnica Universal das Histórias em Quadrinhos. Ikoma, however, left comics after some years to work as a painter.
Renato Silva was a Brazilian illustrator and comic book artist.
Ivan Wasth Rodrigues was a Brazilian painter and comics artist. He learned painting at the ateliers of José Wasth Rodrigues, Cid Affonso Rodrigues and Vittorio Gobbis, and also at the Escola de Belas-Artes de São Paulo. He started his professional career as a book illustrator for the Melhoramentos publishing house and doing advertising design. In the field of comics, he designed a two-part book for EBAL publishing house on the history of Brazil and the adaptation of the classic Casa-Grande & Senzala, by Gilberto Freire. For Freire's book, which talks about the period of slavery in Brazil, Wasth Rodrigues researched for five months the paintings of Jean-Baptiste Debret. In 2001, he was awarded with the Prêmio Angelo Agostini for Master of National Comics, an award that aims to honor artists who have dedicated themselves to Brazilian comics for at least 25 years.

PerifaCon, also informally called Comic Con da Favela, is a comic book event held since 2019 in São Paulo with a focus on reaching mainly the public from the outskirts of São Paulo, who are hardly able to participate in large events such as CCXP due to cost and distance.
Itiban Comic Shop is a Brazilian comic book store founded in 1989 by the couple Mitie Taketani and Francisco Utrabo in Curitiba. It was the first bookstore specializing in comics in the Brazilian South Region and one of the pioneers in Brazil. The name references the Japanese word "ichiban" (一番), meaning "number 1".
Comix Book Shop is a Brazilian comic book store founded October 31, 1986 by Carlos Mann.
