Big Black Delta is a solo project by Mellowdrone vocalist/bassist Jonathan Bates.
Bates began the project in 2010, after becoming frustrated with the logistics of a band. [1] Thanks to help from Alessandro Cortini of Nine Inch Nails, he discovered the possibilities of producing music on a laptop and set about building a new sound. [2]
In 2013, Bates released his debut album, Big Black Delta , which contained a mix of fresh material and songs released on an early-release, limited-edition of the record, titled BBDLP1. [3] The album was issued on Bates' own label, Masters of Bates, and was inspired by the soundtracks of the films Blade Runner and Solaris . [4] It was positively received by critics and was compared by one reviewer to music from Muse and the Joy Formidable. [5] [6] Remixes of songs from the album have since come from Jimmy Edgar, John Tejada, Azari & III, and Martyn. [7] The video for "Side of the Road", directed by Warren Kommers, was inspired by Bates' love of astrophysics and astronomy. [8] [4]
Big Black Delta has collaborated with a number of other artists, such as War Widow, Alessandro Cortini, Susanne Sundfør, and Morgan Kibby, and played in support of Gary Numan, M83, and Jane's Addiction on their respective tours. The project has received praise from Jay Z on his blog, Life+Times. [9] [10]
In 2016, Big Black Delta released his second album, Trágame Tierra . It was financed via PledgeMusic, a music-focused crowdsourcing website, which allowed Bates to issue the album independently. It includes collaborations with Debbie Gibson on "RCVR" and Kimbra on "Bitten by the Apple". It was supported by a North American headlining tour. [11]
Big Black Delta's third album, the all-instrumental WHORU812, was released on eOne Music Canada in June 2017. Prior to its publication, Bates announced he would do only one live performance in 2017, at the Viaduct in Los Angeles. [12]
The songs "Huggin & Kissin" and "Capsize" were used in the 2017 USA Network show The Sinner . [13]
On January 31, 2020, Bates and fellow Los Angeles band Sego (who previously toured in support of Big Black Delta) released a split cover EP called Quid Pro Quo, which saw Sego covering the Big Black Delta song "Into the Night," and Bates covering Sego's "Shame". [14] [15]
On March 20, 2020, Big Black Delta released the single "Summoner", from his upcoming fourth album. It was accompanied by a music video directed by Warren Kommers and Nina McNeely. [16] The track was later remixed by James Welsh, Clearside, and the Bodies Obtained. [17] On May 15, 2020, Big Black Delta announced the upcoming release of the album 4 on July 10 [18] and issued the single "Lord Only Knows", with an accompanying music video, directed by Adam Osgood. On June 12, "Canary", the third single from 4, came out. [19]
Big Black Delta had two original songs featured on the soundtrack for the 2020 film Bill & Ted Face the Music . [20]

Talk Talk were an English band formed in 1981, led by Mark Hollis, Lee Harris (drums), and Paul Webb (bass). Initially a synth-pop group, Talk Talk's first two albums, The Party's Over (1982) and It's My Life (1984), reached top 40 in the UK and produced the international hit singles "Talk Talk", "Today", "It's My Life", and "Such a Shame". They achieved widespread critical success in Europe and the UK with the album The Colour of Spring (1986) along with its singles "Life's What You Make It" and "Living in Another World". 1988's Spirit of Eden moved the group towards a more experimental sound informed by jazz and improvisation, pioneering what became known as post-rock; it was critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful.
M83 are a French electronic music group formed in Antibes in 1999. Initially the duo of multi-instrumentalists Nicolas Fromageau and Anthony Gonzalez, Fromageau parted ways shortly after touring for their second album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. Gonzalez remains the sole constant member of the project, as the primary songwriter and lead vocalist.
Christopher Aaron Hornbrook is an American drummer and a founding member of metalcore/post-hardcore band, Poison the Well. He also is working with Dhani Harrison and Killer Be Killed and The Black Queen singer, Greg Puciato. From 2014 to 2018, Hornbrook was also a member of Senses Fail.
Wouter André "Wally" De Backer, known professionally as Gotye, is a Belgian-born Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is known for his 2011 single "Somebody That I Used to Know", featuring New Zealand musician Kimbra, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the best-selling song of 2012. He has won five ARIA Awards and received a nomination for an MTV EMA for Best Asia and Pacific Act. On 10 February 2013, he won three Grammy Awards at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards Show: Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Somebody That I Used to Know" and Best Alternative Music Album for Making Mirrors.
Angelspit is an Australian electronic music band originally from Sydney and currently based in Chicago. The band was formed in 2004 by vocalists/synthesists Destroyx and ZooG. The band's music combines stylistic elements of horror, punk, pop and electronic music. Their work contains imagery revolving around medical experiments and grotesque societies. Angelspit has toured with Angel Theory, Ayria, Ikon, KMFDM, Tankt and The Crüxshadows, and have also shared the stage with bands such as The Sisters of Mercy, Nitzer Ebb, Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly. They performed with Lords of Acid during a 22-date U.S. tour in March 2011 and toured the United States with Blood on the Dance Floor in October 2011.

Morgan Grace Kibby is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and former actress based in Los Angeles, California. She is best known as a member and collaborator of the French electronic group M83 between 2008 and 2015. Prior to joining M83, she was the frontwoman of the Romanovs, releasing one studio album in 2005. In 2014, Kibby began recording and releasing material under the moniker White Sea.
Justin Osuji, best known by his current alias Sonny J Mason, is a Scottish singer, songwriter, and producer whose style combines "hints of R&B, soul, funk and disco." Mason was signed as a singer-songwriter to Virgin Records at age 14, and his first four singles, released under the name Justin, all reached top 40 positions on the UK Singles Chart in the late 1990s. His debut album Finally was released in 2000 on Innocent Records, and that year he was awarded the Young Scottish Achievers Award from Queen Elizabeth II.

It was later released by Universal Music in December 2011 in the United Kingdom, and 20 January 2012 in Ireland and the United States.
