Big Black Delta is a solo project of Mellowdrone vocalist/bassist Jonathan Bates.
Bates began the project in 2010 after becoming frustrated with the logistics of a band. [2] Thanks to help from Alessandro Cortini, of Nine Inch Nails, he discovered the possibilities of producing music on a laptop and quickly set about building a new sound. [3]
In 2013, Bates released his self-titled album, Big Black Delta . The album contained a mixture of fresh material and songs released on BBDLP1. [4] The album was released on Bates' own label, Masters of Bates, and was inspired by the soundtracks of Blade Runner and Solaris. [5] It was positively received by critics and was compared by one reviewer to music from Muse and The Joy Formidable. [6] [7] Remixes of songs from the album have since come from Jimmy Edgar, John Tejada, Azari & III and Martyn. [8] The video for "Side of the Road" was directed by Warren Kommers, inspired by Bates' love of astrophysics and astronomy. [9] [10]
Big Black Delta has collaborated with a number of other artists such as War Widow, Alessandro Cortini, Susanne Sundfør, Morgan Kibby, and Poison The Well drummer Chris Hornbrook, acting as touring drummer. He has received praise from Jay-Z on his blog, Life+Times, and played in support of Gary Numan, M83 and Jane's Addiction on their tours. [11] [12]
In 2016, Big Black Delta released his third album, Trágame Tierra . The album was financed via PledgeMusic, a music-focused crowdsourcing website, which allowed Big Black Delta to release the album independently. The album contains collaborations with Debbie Gibson on "RCVR" and Kimbra on "Bitten by the Apple"; it was followed by a North American headlining tour. [13]
Big Black Delta's fourth album, the all-instrumental WHORU812, was released on eOne Music Canada in June 2017. Prior to the album's release, Bates announced there would be only one live performance from Big Black Delta in 2017, to be played at The Viaduct in Los Angeles on July 14. [14]
His songs "Huggin & Kissin" and "Capsize" were used in the 2017 USA Network show The Sinner starring Jessica Biel. [15]
On January 31, 2020, Bates and fellow Los Angeles band Sego (who previously toured in support of Big Black Delta) released a split cover EP called "Quid Pro Quo," that saw Sego covering the Big Black Delta song "Into The Night," and Bates covering Sego's song "Shame." [16] The released this digitally and as a limited run of 500 flexi discs. [17]
On March 20, 2020, Big Black Delta released the single, "Summoner," off of his upcoming forth album. It was accompanied by a music video directed by Warren Kommers and Nina McNeely. [18] This followed by remixes for "Summoner" from James Welsh, Clearside, and The Bodies Obtained. [19]
On May 15, 2020, Big Black Delta announced the release of the fourth LP 4 on July 10, 2020 [20] and released the single "Lord Only Knows," with its accompanying music video directed by Adam Osgood. On June 12, "Canary," the third single from 4, was released. [21] He released his fourth studio album, 4, on July 10, 2020, alongside a video for album track "Vessel" (another collaboration with Warren Kommers.) [22]
Big Black Delta had two original songs featured on the soundtrack for Bill & Ted Face The Music , released on August 28, 2020. [23]
Talk Talk were an English band formed in 1981, led by Mark Hollis, Lee Harris (drums), and Paul Webb (bass). Initially a synth-pop group, Talk Talk's first two albums, The Party's Over (1982) and It's My Life (1984), reached top 40 in the UK and produced the international hit singles "Talk Talk", "Today", "It's My Life", and "Such a Shame". They achieved widespread critical success in Europe and the UK with the album The Colour of Spring (1986) along with its singles "Life's What You Make It" and "Living in Another World". 1988's Spirit of Eden moved the group towards a more experimental sound informed by jazz and free improvisation, pioneering what became known as post-rock; it was critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful.
The Black Keys are an American rock duo formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney (drums). The duo began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records, before they eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists during a second wave of the genre's revival in the 2000s. The band's raw blues rock sound draws heavily from Auerbach's blues influences, including Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside, Howlin' Wolf, and Robert Johnson.
M83 are a French electronic music group formed in Antibes in 1999. Initially the duo of multi-instrumentalists Nicolas Fromageau and Anthony Gonzalez, Fromageau parted ways shortly after touring for their second album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. Gonzalez remains the sole constant member of the project, as the primary songwriter and lead vocalist.
Susanne Aartun Sundfør is a Norwegian singer-songwriter and record producer. Born and raised in Haugesund, Sundfør started touring in 2005.

Christopher Aaron Hornbrook is an American drummer and a founding member of metalcore/post-hardcore band, Poison the Well. He also is working with Dhani Harrison and Killer Be Killed and The Black Queen singer, Greg Puciato. From 2014 to 2018, Hornbrook was also a member of Senses Fail.
Justin Meldal-Johnsen is an American musician, record producer, songwriter and musical director. He is best known for his work with artists such as Poppy, Beck, Paramore, Nine Inch Nails, M83, Air, and St. Vincent.
Morgan Grace Kibby is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and former actress based in Los Angeles, California. She is best known as a member and collaborator of the French electronic group M83 between 2008 and 2015. Prior to joining M83, she was the frontwoman of the Romanovs, releasing one studio album in 2005. In 2014, Kibby began recording and releasing material under the moniker White Sea.
"Kissin U" is a song by American recording artist Miranda Cosgrove, released as the sole single from her debut studio album, Sparks Fly. Cosgrove co-wrote the song with Claude Kelly and Dr. Luke; the latter also co-produced it with Ammo. It was released on digital download format on March 22, 2010, and to mainstream radio on May 11, 2010.
Black Cards was an American electronic music band that formed in July 2010 as Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz's new main project following the band's hiatus. Originally conceived as a four-piece electropop band, Wentz played bass guitar and wrote the band's lyrics, while singer Bebe Rexha filled in on vocals. The pair met when Wentz and producer Sam Hollander overheard Rexha recording demos at their studio. Nate Patterson and Spencer Peterson completed the lineup with guitar and drums respectively.

The album was the last M83 album with keyboardist Morgan Kibby and the band's first full double album.

We Have Band, also known as "WHB", is a three-piece electronic music group from Manchester and London consisting of Darren Bancroft and the husband-and-wife duo Thomas Wegg-Prosser and Dede Wegg-Prosser. They have released three albums through the French-based Naïve Records. Their first album, WHB, was released on 5 April 2010 and a ten-track second album, Ternion, was released on 29 January 2012. We Have Band have remixed many artists including Gorillaz, Bloc Party, Micachu, Peter Bjorn and John and M83.
"One Woman Army" is a song by American singer Porcelain Black. The song was set to appear on her debut album Mannequin Factory, though the album has since been cancelled. It was produced by the artist's long-time collaborator RedOne. "One Woman Army" was released as a single on the iTunes Store on March 5, 2014, in France. Starset is an American rock band from Columbus, Ohio, formed by Dustin Bates in 2013. They released their debut album, Transmissions, in 2014 and their second album, Vessels, on January 20, 2017. The band has found success in expanding the ideas of their concept albums through social media and YouTube, with the band generating over $230,000 in revenue from views from the latter as of November 2016. Their single "My Demons" had accumulated over 280 million YouTube views in the same time period. Their most commercially successful song, "Monster", peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in May 2017. A third studio album, Divisions, was released on September 13, 2019, with their fourth studio album, Horizons, released on October 22, 2021.

It was written by Howard Lawrence, Guy Lawrence, Lorde and produced by James Napier and Disclosure. The single was released on 23 September 2015, by PMR and Island Records, as the fourth single from their second studio album Caracal (2015). "Magnets" is an electronica and dancehall song with influences of reggae fusion along with electronic beats, percussion loops, synthesizers and tribal drums in its instrumentation. Its lyrics describe the risk taken by two lovers restricted from being together for moral reasons.
