The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is a U.S. federal government agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation which regulates civil aviation in the United States and surrounding international waters. Its powers include air traffic control,certification of personnel and aircraft,setting standards for airports,and protection of U.S. assets during the launch or re-entry of commercial space vehicles. Powers over neighboring international waters were delegated to the FAA by authority of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
The Convair 880 is a retired American narrow-body jet airliner produced by the Convair division of General Dynamics. It was designed to compete with the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 by being smaller but faster,a niche that failed to create demand. When it was first introduced,some in aviation circles claimed that at 615 mph (990 km/h),it was the fastest jet transport in the world. Only 65 Convair 880s were produced over the lifetime of the production run from 1959 to 1962,and General Dynamics eventually withdrew from the airliner market after considering the 880 project a failure. The Convair 990 Coronado was a stretched and faster variant of the 880.

ValuJet Airlines was an ultra low-cost airline in the United States that operated from 1992 until 1997,when it was rebranded as AirTran Airlines after joining forces with AirTran Airways. It was headquartered in unincorporated Clayton County,Georgia,that operated regularly scheduled domestic and international flights in the Eastern United States and Canada during the 1990s. The company was founded in 1992 and was notorious for its sometimes dangerous cost-cutting measures. All of the airline's planes were purchased used from other airlines;very little training was provided to workers;and contractors were used for maintenance and other services. The company quickly developed a reputation for safety issues. In 1995,the military refused ValuJet's bid to fly military personnel over safety worries,and officials at the FAA wanted the airline to be grounded.

Flying Blind,Flying Safe is a non-fiction book about the American airline industry and Federal Aviation Administration,written by Mary Schiavo with Sabra Chartrand. The book was first published in March 1997 in hardcover format by Avon Books. An updated paperback edition was published on April 1,1998. Schiavo is a former Inspector General of the United States Department of Transportation,and Chartrand a journalist for The New York Times. Schiavo was Inspector General of the United States Department of Transportation for six years,and resigned in 1996 shortly after the ValuJet Flight 592 airline crash in the Florida Everglades. She became a whistleblower and was highly critical of the airline industry and its relationship with aviation safety agencies in the United States federal government.
Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III is an American retired fighter pilot,diplomat,and airline pilot. He is best known for his actions as captain of US Airways Flight 1549 on January 15,2009,when he ditched the plane,landing on the Hudson River after both engines were disabled by a bird strike. All 155 people aboard survived. After the Hudson landing,Sullenberger became an outspoken advocate for aviation safety and helped develop new protocols for flight safety. He served as the co-chairman,along with his co-pilot on Flight 1549,Jeffrey Skiles,of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA)'s Young Eagles youth introduction-to-aviation program from 2009 to 2013.
Southwest Airlines Flight 812 was a Boeing 737-300 passenger jet that on April 1,2011,suffered rapid depressurization while cruising at 34,000 ft (10,000 m) near Yuma,Arizona,leading to an emergency landing at Yuma International Airport. Two of the 122 people on board suffered minor injuries. The aircraft was operating Southwest Airlines' domestic scheduled service from Phoenix,Arizona,to Sacramento,California.

The Federal Aviation Administration initially affirmed the MAX's continued airworthiness,claiming to have insufficient evidence of accident similarities. By March 13,the FAA followed behind 51 concerned regulators in deciding to ground the aircraft. All 387 aircraft delivered to airlines were grounded by March 18.

On January 11,2023,U.S. flights were grounded or delayed as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) attempted to fix a system outage. FAA paused all flight departures between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. ET. Flights already in the air were allowed to continue to their destinations. Around 8:30 am. ET,flights were beginning to resume departures. The outage was the first time since September 11,2001,that the FAA issued a nationwide ground stop in the United States.
