Birgit Koschischek (born 22 May 1987 in Vienna) is an Austrian swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. [1] [2] She is a two-time Olympian, a four-time Austrian long and short course record holder, and a member of Schwechat Swimming Club (German : Schwimmverein Schwechat) in Schwechat, under her personal coach Adam Thoroczkay. Swimming career

Koschischek made her international debut at the 2007 Military World Games in Hyderabad, India, where she earned a bronze medal in the 100 m freestyle by one tenth of a second (0.10) behind Romania's Camelia Potec, posting her time at 57.62 seconds. [3] [4] In 2008, Koschischek reached the semifinals of the freestyle and butterfly (both 100 m) at the European Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands, with respective times of 56.15 and 59.61. Having cleared FINA B-cuts in both events, she guaranteed a spot on the Austrian swimming team for the Olympics. [5] [6]

Koschischek represented Austria at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where she qualified for two swimming events. On the first night of the Games, Koschischek won the third heat of the 100 m butterfly, by 0.28 of a second ahead of Hong Kong's Hannah Wilson in an Austrian record of 59.07, but she missed out the semifinals by 0.58-second deficit, as she placed twenty-sixth out of 69 swimmers in the preliminaries. [7] In the 100 m freestyle, Koschischek posted a lifetime best and another Austrian record of 55.62. She raced to third place and twenty-ninth overall by a hundredth of a second (0.01) behind Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace of the Bahamas. [8]

Shortly after the Olympics, Koschischek broke two more national records in the same events at the 2008 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Rijeka, Croatia, with a time of 53.67 and 57.42 seconds, respectively. [9] She also achieved an eighth-place finish, and eventually added her fifth-career Austrian record (2:07.46) in the women's 200 m butterfly at the 2011 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Szczecin, Poland. [10]

Four years after competing in her first Olympics, Koschischek qualified for her second Austrian team, as a 25-year-old, at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, by attaining a B-standard entry time of 58.80 seconds in the women's 100 m butterfly. [11] She challenged seven other swimmers on the third heat again, including former Olympic champion Otylia Jędrzejczak of Poland. She came only in last place by one tenth of a second (0.10) behind Portugal's Sara Oliveira, outside her national record time of 1:00.54. Koschischek, however, failed to advance into the semifinals, as she placed thirty-seventh out of 42 swimmers in the preliminary heats. [12]

Orsolya Tompa is a Hungarian swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. She represented her nation Hungary at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has edged out fellow swimmer Emese Kovács to claim the 100 m butterfly title by eight hundredths of a second (0.08) at the 2007 European Junior Swimming Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, with a time of 1:00.22.

Anastasiya Sergeyevna Aksenova is a Russian swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. She represented her nation Russia in a sprint freestyle swimming double at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has also claimed multiple Russian championship titles and national records in both the individual and relay freestyle events. Aksenova was also a member of Suduroyar Svimjifelag in Vagur, Faroe Islands, under the tutelage of head coach Jon Bjarnason.

Heather Brand is a Zimbabwean swimmer, who specialised in freestyle and butterfly events. Brand had claimed a total of five medals at the 2007 All-Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria, and eventually represented her nation Zimbabwe in the 100 m butterfly at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Apart from her medal treasury, Brand also established five long and short-course national records in all butterfly events at a major international competition, spanning three editions of the World Championships.

Michal Rubáček is a Czech swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. He is a two-time Olympian, and a multiple-time Czech national record holder for the butterfly events.

Jana Klusáčková is a Czech former swimmer who specialized in sprint freestyle events. She is a two-time Olympian and a multiple-time Czech champion and record holder for the freestyle events. Klusackova also won a bronze medal in the 100 m freestyle at the 2005 Summer Universiade in Izmir, Turkey, in an outstanding time of 56.40 seconds.

Chang Hee-jin is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. She is a two-time Olympian, and a three-time All-American swimmer in the same stroke. Chang is also a former varsity swimmer for the Texas Longhorns, and a graduate of political science at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. Prior to her time with the Longhorns, she attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where she was a 4-year varsity athlete and a formerly held various NEPSAC swimming records.

Leah Simone Martindale-Stancil is a Barbadian former competition swimmer who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. Martindale represented Barbados in two editions of the Olympic Games, where she became the first black female in history to reach an Olympic swimming final in the 50 m freestyle. She also holds three Barbadian records in a sprint freestyle double and in the 50 m butterfly, and twelve All-American honors, while attending the University of Florida.

Siobhan Trichelle Cropper is a 2-time Olympian and swimmer from Trinidad and Tobago, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. Cropper represented Trinidad and Tobago in two editions of the Olympic Games, and eventually captured the 100 m butterfly title at the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She also holds three Trinidadian records in a sprint freestyle and butterfly double, two NCAA championship titles and fourteen All-American honors, while attending Stanford University.

Emma Jennifer McKeon, is a retired Australian competitive swimmer. She is an eight-time world record holder, three current and five former, in relays. Her total career haul of 14 Olympic medals following the 2024 Olympic Games made her the most decorated Australian, the third-most decorated swimmer, and the seventh-most decorated athlete in Olympic history and included one gold medal from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, four gold medals from the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and one gold medal from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. With four gold and three bronze medals she was the most decorated athlete across all sports at the 2020 Summer Olympics, and tied for the most medals won by a woman in a single Olympic Games. She also won 20 medals, including five gold medals, at the World Aquatics Championships; and a record 20 medals, including 14 gold, at the Commonwealth Games.
