Bob R. Simpson is an American businessman. He is the co-founder of XTO Energy and co-chairman of the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball (MLB) team.

Career

In 1985, Simpson founded Cross Timbers Oil Company and has served as Chairman of the Board since July 1, 1996. [1] In 2001, the name of the company was changed to XTO Energy. In 2009 XTO Energy was ranked 325th on the Forbes Global 2000. [1] In December 2009, ExxonMobil announced a proposal to acquire XTO Energy for $41 billion. [2] The merger was completed in June 2010. [3]

Baseball owner

In August 2010, Simpson and another Texas oil magnate, Ray Davis, served as co-lead investors in the $593 million winning bid to take the Texas Rangers baseball team out of bankruptcy. [4] Simpson and Davis became co-chairmen of the Rangers, but initially remained in the background, leaving the Rangers in the hands of managing partner and CEO Chuck Greenberg and President Nolan Ryan. They served mainly as senior consultants, an arrangement continued after Greenberg resigned in 2011, making Ryan the undisputed day-to-day head of the franchise. [5]

In October 2010, the Texas Rangers played in the World Series for the first time in franchise history, but lost the series to the San Francisco Giants. [6] In October 2011, the team again reached the World Series, but lost again, this time to the St. Louis Cardinals. [7] Ryan left the ownership group in 2013. However, Davis and Simpson mostly left the Rangers in the hands of general manager Jon Daniels and have rarely interfered. As before, they served mostly as senior consultants. This continued when Daniels was succeeded by Chris Young.

Education

Simpson received a BS in accounting and an MBA from Baylor University. [8] He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2010. [9]

RayLynn Records

In 2012, Simpson, along with his wife Janice, started a record label for emerging musicians named RayLynn Records. Hear Me, the debut album from up and coming rock musician Kyle Sherman, was the first recording produced by the company. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]

Numismatics

Simpson is an avid coin collector, and has amassed a collection of rarities. In 2020, part of his collection was auctioned off, including an 1894-S dime (one of nine known to exist). [16] [17]

Ryan was also known to throw a devastating 12–6 curveball at exceptional velocity for a breaking ball.

The Round Rock Express are a Minor League Baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. They are located in Round Rock, Texas, and play their home games at the Dell Diamond. The team is named for Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, who was nicknamed "The Ryan Express." Ryan, along with son Reid Ryan and Don Sanders make up the team's ownership group, Ryan Sanders Baseball.

Forbes magazine estimated Hicks' wealth at $1 billion in 2009, but it dropped to $700 million in 2010. Hicks co-founded the investment firm, Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, previously owned 50% of the English football club Liverpool F.C., and is chairman of Hicks Holdings LLC, which owns and operates Hicks Sports Group, the company that formerly owned the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Stars, and the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. In 2010, Hicks was forced to sell the Rangers and Liverpool to satisfy his creditors, and the Stars went into bankruptcy the following year.

The Lone Star Series is a Major League Baseball (MLB) rivalry featuring Texas' two major league franchises, the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. It is an outgrowth of the "natural rivalry" established by MLB as part of interleague play as the Rangers are a member of the American League (AL) and the Astros were a member of the National League (NL) until 2012. During interleague play, the winner of the six-game series was awarded the Silver Boot, a 30-inch (760 mm) tall display of a size 15 cowboy boot cast in silver, complete with a custom, handmade spur. If each team had won three games each for a tie, the declared winner was the team that scored the most runs over the course of the series. In 2013, the Astros joined the American League West with the Rangers and changed their rivalry from an interleague to an intradivision contest. The rivalry, which was once dormant, has become far more heated in recent seasons. From 2013 to 2022, 19 games were played each season. Beginning in 2023, the teams play each other 13 times a year.

The Texas Rangers' 2010 season was the 50th in franchise history. The team, managed by Ron Washington, won their first division title since 1999 and finally won a playoff series, taking longer than any other North American professional sports franchise to accomplish the feat. The club subsequently reached the World Series for the first time in only their fourth playoff appearance. Washington would become only the second manager in franchise history to lead the Rangers to the post season and the first to ever win a post season series. They would win the American League pennant by defeating the defending World Series champions, the New York Yankees, in six games in the ALCS. In the World Series, they lost to the San Francisco Giants in five games.

Charles M. "Chuck" Greenberg is an American sports attorney, chairman and founder of the Greenberg Sports Group, and owner of three minor league baseball teams. Greenberg was managing partner of Rangers Baseball Express, LLC, which on August 5, 2010, won court approval to purchase the Texas Rangers, a Major League Baseball team, from Tom Hicks and Hicks Sports Group. Greenberg served as Managing Partner and CEO of the Rangers from 2010 to 2011.

The Texas Rangers' 2011 season was the 51st season in the overall history of the franchise and the 40th since the team relocated to Arlington, Texas. At the season outset, the Rangers were the defending American League champions.

The Texas Rangers Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise was established in 1961 as the second incarnation of the Washington Senators, an expansion team awarded to Washington, D.C., after the old Washington Senators team of the American League moved to Minnesota and became the Twins. The new Senators remained in Washington through 1971 playing at Griffith Stadium in their first season and at RFK Stadium for the next 10 years.
