History

Big Tree Entertainment was founded in 1999 by Ashish Hemrajani following a trip to South Africa, where he heard a radio advertisement about online ticket sales for a rugby union match. Rajesh Balpande joined the venture to oversee financial operations, and Parikshit Dar managed technology development. [5] During its early years, the company focused on developing inventory management systems for cinemas and offered telephone-based ticket booking services with home delivery. [6]

In 2007, Big Tree Entertainment launched Book My Show as an online ticketing platform that sold movie tickets for multiplex operators under agreements with cinema chains. By 2013, the company had entered into a five-year partnership with PVR Cinemas to distribute tickets. [7] In 2014, Book My Show was operating in more than 200 cities across India and reported cumulative ticket sales of over 100 million. [8] [9]

Book My Show expanded its operations through a series of acquisitions and entry into new regional markets. In 2013, the company acquired Chennai-based TicketGreen. [10] In 2015, it acquired Eventifier, a social media analytics firm, [11] and in 2016, it purchased a majority stake in Fantain, a sports fan engagement platform. [12] That same year, Book My Show launched operations in Indonesia and later extended its services to Singapore and Malaysia. [13] During this period, the platform also began selling tickets for non-movie events, including concerts, comedy shows, and sports. In 2017, Book My Show partnered with SPI Cinemas, a regional cinema chain, to add more theaters to its platform. [14]

Between 2017 and 2019, Book My Show continued diversifying by acquiring Hyderabad-based MastiTickets, [15] Pune-based Townscript, [16] which provided event registration services, and nFusion, a provider of digital media content. [17] Book My Show also expanded its ticketing services to include major sports events, such as the Indian Premier League and various international leagues. [18]

In December 2019, Book My Show reorganized its Southeast Asia operations under a separate entity headquartered in Singapore to manage its activities in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. [13] As part of this reorganization, a regional CEO was appointed, and the entity secured funding from Jungle Ventures to support its regional operations. [19]

Funding

Book My Show has raised multiple rounds of funding from global investors. In 2014, it raised USD 25 million, equivalent to approximately INR 150 crore, from SAIF Partners, which valued the company at around INR 1,000 crore. [20] In 2016, the company raised more than ₹550 crore in a funding round led by Stripes Group. [21] In 2018, it secured USD 100 million in a Series D funding round led by TPG Growth, with participation from existing investors. [22] In 2019, Jungle Ventures invested in Big Tree Entertainment Singapore to support the company's expansion across Southeast Asia. [23]

Partnership

Book My Show has formed several strategic partnerships. In 2010, it served as the exclusive ticketing partner for the Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab, [24] and as the official online ticketing partner for the Delhi Daredevils during the third season of the Indian Premier League. By 2018, Book My Show had become the exclusive ticketing partner for four IPL teams: the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals. [18] In 2017, the company partnered with SPI Cinemas to strengthen its presence in South India. In 2018, Book My Show entered into a partnership with Grab, a regional ride-hailing platform operating in Southeast Asia. In 2019, Amazon India partnered with Book My Show to offer movie ticket sales directly on the Amazon platform. [25]

Corporate social responsibility

In 2014, Book My Show launched BookASmile, an initiative that allowed users to add small donations when purchasing tickets, with funds directed towards various social programs. In 2025, the initiative was rebranded as BookAChange, with a renewed focus on providing scholarships and opportunities in music and the performing arts for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. [26]

Recognition

In 2013, Book My Show was named Startup of the Year at The Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence. [27]
