Construction

Bornholm Express was built in Singapore in 2006 by Damen Group, Gorinchem, the Netherlands as yard number 082. The ship is a 322 GT monohull design constructed of aluminium. Bornholm Express is 41.00 metres (134 ft 6 in) long, with a beam of 8.00 metres (26 ft 3 in) and a depth of 2.30 metres (7 ft 7 in). [1] She is powered by three Caterpillar C32 diesel engines driving three screw propellors via reverse reduction gearboxes. Each engine is rated at 1,645 kilowatts (2,206 hp) at 2,300 rpm. [2] She is capable of 25 knots (46 km/h). [3]

The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to the mechanical compression. This contrasts with spark-ignition engines such as a petrol engine or gas engine, which use a spark plug to ignite an air-fuel mixture.

History

Bornholm Express was ordered by Christansøfarten Aps, Gudhjem on 28 May 2004. Launched in February 2006, she was completed in March 2006 and the loaded on board MV Pancaldo for delivery. On 8 April 2006, she was unloaded in Copenhagen and then sailed to Gudhjem. She entered service on 1 June 2006. [1] She uses the call sign OYGF, and is allocated the IMO number 9356476 and MMSI number 220451000. [4] Her port of registry is Gudhjem. [5]

Bornholm Express is licensed to carry 245 passengers. She serves routes between Simrishamn, Sweden and Allinge, Bornholm, Denmark. It also serves Christiansø. [3] It takes about 60 minutes to get to Allinge from Simrishamn and 40 minutes to Christiansø. In May and September, Bornholm Express runs between Bornholm and Kolobrzeg (Poland).

MS <i>Color Viking</i> ship

MS Color Viking is a ferry owned by the Norway-based Color Line, operated on their service between Sandefjord and Strömstad. She was built in 1985 as MS Peder Paars by Nakskov Skibsværft, Nakskov, Denmark for DSB Færger. Between 1991 and 2000 she sailed as MS Stena Invicta for Sealink Stena Line and Stena Line. In 1998 she was chartered to Silja Line under the marketing name MS Wasa Jubilee. In May 2000 the Stena Invicta started operating for Color Line and received her current name.

MS GNV Allegra is a cruiseferry owned by MSC. The ship was built at Wärtsilä Marine Perno Shipyard in Turku, Finland for Jahre Line as MS Kronprins Harald. In 1991 she passed under ownership of Color Line, for whom she sailed until sold to Irish Ferries in 2007. She was sold by Irish Ferries to Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in 2019 and renamed GNV Allegra for service in the fleet of MSC subsidiary Grandi Navi Veloci.

MS GNV Azzurra is a cruiseferry owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company and operated by the Italy-based SNAV. It was ordered from Öresundsvarvet in Landskrona, Sweden by Rederi AB Gotland as MS Gotland, but delivered as MS Wasa Star to Vaasanlaivat / Vasabåtarna. Between 1984 and 2008 she sailed as MS Peter Wessel for Larvik Line and Color Line, before sold to her current owners.

HSC <i>Super Runner</i>

Super Runner is a fast ferry owned and operated by Golden Star Ferries. She was built in 1999 at Fincantieri, Riva Trigoso, Italy, for Sea Containers Ltd, but entered service only in 2000 for Sea Container's subsidiary Silja Line. In 2006 she was transferred to another Sea Containers subsidiary, SuperSeaCat. MS <i>Arberia</i>

MS Arberia is a cruiseferry owned by Chryses Finance Co. and operated by Ilion Lines on their Trieste–Durres–Bari -service. She was built in 1975 by Dubegion-Normandie S.A., Nantes, France for Steamship Company Bore, Finland as MS Bore Star for Steamship Company Bore who used her in Silja Line services on the Baltic Sea. During the northern hemisphere winter months she was chartered to Finnlines for cruise services on African west coast. In 1980 she was sold to Finland Steamship Company and renamed MS Silja Star but retained in Silja Line service. Between 1986 and 1992 she was used in different cruise and ferry services around the world for various operators under the names MS Orient Express, MS Club Sea, MS Eurosun and MS Orient Sun. In 1992 her ownership passed to Wasa Line and she was renamed MS Wasa Queen for Baltic Sea ferry service. In 1993 Wasa Line was merged into Silja Line and Wasa Queen returned to the Silja Line fleet. In 2001 she was sold to Star Cruises for use in Far Eastern ferry service and later casino cruising with their daughter company Cruise Ferries without a change in name. In 2008 Wasa Queen was withdrawn from service, and in 2009 sold to her current owners.

Finnlines Plc is a shipping operator of ro-ro and passenger services in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. The Company is a part of the Grimaldi Group. Finnlines’ sea transports are concentrated in the Baltic and the North Sea. Finnlines’ passenger-freight vessels offer services from Finland to Germany and via the Åland Islands to Sweden as well as from Sweden to Germany. The Company has subsidiaries or sales offices in Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Sweden, Denmark and Poland. In addition to sea transportation, the Company provides port services in Finland in Helsinki and Turku.

MS <i>Princesa Marissa</i>

MS Princesa Marissa was a cruise ship owned and operated by the Cyprus-based Louis Cruise Lines. She was built in 1966 by Wärtsilä Helsinki Shipyard, Helsinki, Finland as the RORO car/passenger ferry M/S Finnhansa for Finnlines, Finland. The ship has also sailed under the colours of Birka Line as M/S Prinsessan.

The Star class is a class of five Ro-pax ferries built by Fincantieri, Italy at their Castellammare di Stabia and Ancona shipyards for Finnlines. They are used on Finnlines' routes connecting Finland to Germany and Sweden to Germany. Most ships of this class were delivered behind original planned schedule.

<i>Hansa</i>-class ferry

The Hansa class is a class of four ro-pax ferries originally built by Stocznia Gdańska, Poland for Finncarriers-Poseidon service. Following a merger of Finncarriers and Poseidon to Finnlines, all ships of this class came to be owned by Finnlines. Between 2003 and 2006 she sailed for TT-Line (Australia) as MS Spirit of Tasmania III.

MS Skania is a fast ropax ferry operated by Unity Line on their Świnoujście-Ystad route. She was built in 1995 by Schichau Seebeckwerft in Bremerhaven, Germany for Superfast Ferries as MS Superfast I. Between 2004 and 2008 she sailed for Grimaldi Lines as MS Eurostar Roma.

British Railways operated a number of ships from its formation in 1948 on a variety of routes. Many ships were acquired on nationalisation, and others were built for operation by British Railways or its later subsidiary, Sealink. Those ships capable of carrying rail vehicles were classed under TOPS as Class 99.

Rø Village in Capital Region of Denmark, Denmark

is a small community on the Danish island of Bornholm, 2 km from the north coast and 7 km west of Gudhjem. The Rønne–Allinge railway (1913–1953) brought prosperity to the village leaving the old station in the village. The Bornholm Art Museum is close to Rø as are the scenic Sanctuary Rocks.
