Merseyside is a metropolitan and ceremonial county in North West England, with a population of 1.38 million. It encompasses the metropolitan area centred on both banks of the lower reaches of the Mersey Estuary and comprises five metropolitan boroughs: Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton, Wirral and the city of Liverpool. Merseyside, which was created on 1 April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972, takes its name from the River Mersey and sits within the historic counties of Lancashire and Cheshire.

Switch Island is a major road junction near Aintree in Merseyside, England in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton. The junction is at the western terminus of both the M57 and M58 motorways, which converge on the A59 trunk road, the north-south route from Liverpool. The junction is also the terminus of the A5036, a road which serves the Port of Liverpool, and the A5758 which serves as a bypass for the village of Thornton.
Roby is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley, Merseyside, England. It was previously administratively linked with its neighbour Huyton by the Huyton-with-Roby civil parish and Huyton with Roby Urban District. Like Huyton, Roby is effectively a dormitory village or suburb of the neighbouring City of Liverpool. At the 2001 Census, the population of Roby was 9,353,. reducing to 7,254 at the 2011 Census. Roby is the location of the sixth form centre of Knowsley Community College.
