History

The influential traditional martial arts, olympic wrestling and brazilian jiu-jitsu have shaped MMA in Australia, along with the combat sports of boxing and kickboxing/muay thai.[ citation needed ]

Sanctioning

The states and territories of Australia have different sanctioning bodies and rules. Sanctioning bodies include: Combat Sports Authority (NSW) and the Professional Boxing and Combat Sports Board (Victoria).

Governing Body

Boxing Australia is the national sporting body that runs amateur boxing in Australia and Australian National Boxing Federation which governs Professional boxing in Australia.

Robert Dale Brown, known as Dale Brown, is a Canadian former professional boxer. He competed as an amateur from 1990 to 1994 and professionally from 1995 to 2007. As an amateur he represented Canada in the light heavyweight division at the 1992 Summer Olympics, losing to the eventual gold medal winner, Germany's Torsten May in the round of 16.

Cecilia Brækhus Norwegian boxer

Cecilia Carmen Linda Brækhus is a Norwegian professional boxer and former kickboxer. In boxing she reigned as the undisputed female welterweight champion from 2014 to 2020, and is the first woman in any weight class to hold the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles simultaneously. She is also one of only 10 boxers in history, female or male, to hold all four major world titles simultaneously, along with Bernard Hopkins (2004–2005), Jermain Taylor (2005), Terence Crawford (2017), Oleksandr Usyk (2018–2019), Claressa Shields, Katie Taylor (2019–), Jessica McCaskill (2020–), Josh Taylor (2021–), and Canelo Alvarez (2021-). In 2016, she captured the IBO title, becoming the first ever boxer to hold five world titles from sanctioning bodies simultaneously.

Lance Revill is the former president of the New Zealand Professional Boxing Association (NZPBA), a New Zealand boxing promoter, referee, and a former New Zealand professional boxer. Revill compiled a professional record of 21 wins and 13 losses, with 13 knockouts, in light heavyweight bouts fought in New Zealand and Australia between 1974 and 1990.

Turori George also known as Toro George born in Rarotonga, Cook Islands is a Cook Islander/New Zealander amateur featherweight and professional feather/super featherweight boxer of the 1960s and '70s who as an amateur won a bronze medal at featherweight losing to eventual silver medal winner Ali Juma of Kenya in the Boxing at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia, and as a professional won the New Zealand Boxing Association featherweight title, Australasian featherweight title, and Commonwealth featherweight title, his professional fighting weight varied from 123+34 lb, i.e. featherweight to 130+34 lb, i.e. super featherweight.

The Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) is the governing body of amateur boxing in Pakistan. The Pakistan Amateur Boxing Federation (PBF) organizes all amateur matches countrywide. It is also responsible for scouting and raising boxers from Pakistan to compete on a worldwide level.

Savannah Rose Marshall is a British professional boxer who has held the WBO female middleweight title since 2020. As an amateur, she became the first British female world champion after securing gold at the 2012 World Championships. She has been nicknamed as the 'Silent Assassin' due to her shyness. As of October 2020, she is ranked as the world's second best active female middleweight by BoxRec and the fifth active super-middleweight by The Ring.

Michael Conlan (boxer) Irish boxer

Michael John Conlan is an Irish professional boxer who challenged for the WBA (Regular) featherweight title in March 2022. As an amateur, he reached number one in the AIBA bantamweight world rankings, with achievements that include a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and gold at the 2015 World Championships. He has been one of Ireland's most successful amateur fighters of all time. He turned professional in 2016 after misgivings with the amateur sport, and had his first bout in 2017.

Sulley Shittu is a Ghanaian amateur fly/bantamweight, and professional bantamweight boxer of the 1960s and 1970s who as an amateur represented Ghana at flyweight in the Boxing at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, losing to John McCafferty of the Republic of Ireland, won silver at the 1965 All-Africa Games in Brazzaville, won a gold medal at flyweight in the Boxing at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, represented Ghana at bantamweight in the Boxing at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, losing to Horst Rascher of West Germany, and won a gold medal at bantamweight in the Boxing at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland and as a professional won the African Boxing Union (ABU) bantamweight title, and Commonwealth bantamweight title.

John 'Johnny' Cooke is a former English amateur lightweight and professional light welter/welter/light middle/middleweight boxer.

Mark Rowe is an English amateur light middleweight and professional light middle/middle/light heavyweight boxer of the 1960s and '70s.

John G Pritchett is an English amateur welterweight and professional light middle/middle/light heavyweight boxer of the 1960s and '70s, and boxing manager of the 1970s and '80s. He fought as Johnny Pritchett.

Andrew Moloney is an Australian professional boxer who held the WBA (Regular) super-flyweight title in 2020, having previously held the interim title since 2019. At regional level he held the WBA Oceania bantamweight title from 2016 to 2017 and the Commonwealth super-flyweight title in 2017. As an amateur, he won a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the flyweight division. As of June 2020, he is ranked as the world’s seventh best active super-flyweight by The Ring magazine, eighth by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and ninth by BoxRec.

The Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) is a governing body that sanctions professional boxing bouts for territories within the Commonwealth, and is an affiliate of the WBC.
