Brad Byers (born October 8, 1959) [1] is an American entertainer known for his extreme performances, including sword swallowing, lying on beds of nails and inserting various tools into his nasal cavity. For the latter he is also referred to as a "Human toolbox". He holds several World Records. His brother Rod assists him in some performances. [1]

Biography

Brad Byers was born and raised in Moscow, Idaho. According to the biography given on his official site, he joined a traveling circus to become a juggler shortly after graduating from high school. Two years later he left the circus to focus on TV performances. He began swallowing swords at the age of 21. [2] Throughout his career he performed in more than 20 countries. [3] He is listed in the 1999, 2000 and 2003 editions of the Guinness Book of Records . [4] He also took part in fourth and eighth seasons of NBC's America's Got Talent TV show (2009, 2013).

Sword swallowing

He earned a Guinness World Record for "The Most Swords Swallowed and Twisted at One Time" by swallowing twelve 27-inch swords one at a time until all 12 were in his esophagus and then twisting all 12 swords 180 degrees in his throat before withdrawing them and taking a bow. [4] [5] He is also among the few people in the world able to swallow a curved sword.

"Human toolbox"

"Human toolbox" is a moniker given to him by the Guinness World Records for his activities involving inserting various tools in his nasal cavity. [3] He hammers in a nail or an awl and hangs a weight on it. Seen through the X-ray, the nail stops in several millimeters from his brain. He puts in a fishing hook into his nasal cavity so that it shows up out of his mouth. [6] He also puts in a drill when it is being turned on. As it reaches maximum safe depth, he turns the drill off and on again when getting it out. [4]

He has also laid on a bed of nails while his brother ran over him driving a quad bike. [1]

Sword swallowing is a skill in which the performer passes a sword through the mouth and down the esophagus to the stomach. This feat is not swallowing in the traditional sense. The natural processes that constitute swallowing do not take place, but are repressed to keep the passage from the mouth to the stomach open for the sword. The practice is dangerous and there is risk of injury or death.

A bed of nails is an oblong piece of wood, the size of a bed, with nails pointing upwards out of it. It appears to the spectator that anyone lying on this "bed" would be injured by the nails, but this is not so. Assuming the nails are numerous enough, the weight is distributed among them so that the pressure exerted by each nail is not enough to puncture the person's skin.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Human blockhead</span> Carnival or sideshow performers

A human blockhead is a carnival or sideshow performer who hammers a nail or other implement into his or her nasal cavity via the nostril. The stunt is often shocking to audiences, who believe that the nail is being hammered into the skull itself. In reality, the stunt plays on the anatomical misconception that the nasal cavity goes upward, rather than straight back. The performer merely learns the terrain of the nasal cavity and lessens his or her sensitivity until the implement can be slid straight back through the nasal cavity until it hits the back of the throat. The use of a hammer merely adds to the shock value by creating the illusion that the nail is being pounded through bone. One performer, Doc Swami, pushed the nail too far such that it got lost; however, shaking the head and blowing the nose can dislodge the nail. Some performers have gone so far as to use a power drill.

Ryan Stock is a Canadian-based TV stunt man from Beaumont, Alberta who has a show on the Discovery Channel called "Guinea Pig". Stock and his fiancée Amber Lynn Walker travel around Canada and the United States and perform stunts involving electrical shocks, automobile crashes and intentional poisoning. The Guinea pig show is no longer in production but may still air in some countries. Stock became fascinated with magic at an early age and quickly developed his skills as a magician. He soon moved on from simple tricks to performing feats such as fire-eating and fire-breathing. Stock is also the creator and originator of several sideshow stunts performed around the world, notably his signature piece entitled "The Human MeatHead", created in 2000. This stunt involves forcing a large meat hook into his nose and out his mouth, from which he then hangs weight from the hook.
