Laura Bretan (born April 7, 2002) is a Romanian-American [1] soprano. She was the winner of season six of the Pro TV series Romania's Got Talent , and later placed sixth in season eleven of America's Got Talent , both in 2016.
Bretan was born in Chicago to parents from Romania. She first began singing when she was six years old. Bretan was taught how to sing by her mother. At age eight, she began singing at Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church. Both she and her parents are active members of the Romanian Pentecostal Church of Chicago. [2]
In 2016, Bretan was the winner of Romania's Got Talent . [3] [4] Following that win, Bretan auditioned for season eleven of America's Got Talent when she sang "Nessun dorma" from Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot . [5] The act received a standing ovation from Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel; afterwards Mel B pressed her golden buzzer, sending Bretan directly to the quarterfinals.
Bretan performed in the first live show on July 26, 2016, and advanced to the semifinals with the audience vote. She gave another well-received performance in the semifinals, but missed out on the audience vote later and lost the "Dunkin Save" vote. However, Bretan won the judges' vote and passed onto the finals. [6] Bretan performed "O mio babbino caro" in the finals, earning very favorable reviews from the show's judges. "Today you look like a princess, but tonight you rule the stage like a queen," said Klum. [7] She finished in sixth place overall. [8]
In 2017, Bretan performed "I Dreamed a Dream" in the finale of season one of The Voice Kids Romania . [9] In December 2018, Bretan was announced as one of the semi-finalists for the 2019 edition of Selecția Națională , Romania's national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel. She performed her song "Dear Father", winning in the televote but finishing 3rd in the jury, being the runner up in the overall results. [10]
On 15 September 2023, she also sang the song Adagio with its writer and original singer Lara Fabian for the anniversary concert of Gheorge Zamfir.[ citation needed ]
Bretan holds dual citizenship from Romania and the United States. [1] In October 2018, Bretan appeared in an advertisement calling on Romanians to support the 2018 Romanian constitutional referendum which would constitutionally ban same-sex marriage. [11]
Anna Cecilia Sahlin, known professionally as Anna Sahlene and formerly by the one-word stage name Sahlene, is a Swedish performer best known as a singer: she placed third at the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 representing Estonia with "Runaway".
"Let Me Try" is a song recorded by Romanian singer Luminița Anghel and Romanian percussion band Sistem, consisting of Toth Zoltan, Mihai Ciprian Rogojan, Claudiu Purcărin, Robert Magheti and Florin Cătălin Romașcu. It was released as a CD single in 2005 by the Romanian Television (TVR). Romanian composer Cristian Faur wrote and produced the single for Anghel, who subsequently recorded it in collaboration with Sistem. Musically, "Let Me Try" is an uptempo folk-influenced disco song.
Romania participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 in Kyiv, Ukraine. They selected their entry, "Let Me Try" by Romanian singer Luminița Anghel and group Sistem, through the national selection Selecția Națională 2005 in March 2005. Controversy surrounded the event, as second-placed singer Loredana accused the organising broadcaster, Romanian Television (TVR), of vote rigging. Prior to the 2005 contest, Romania had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest seven times since its first entry in 1994. Its highest placing in the contest, to this point, had been ninth place, which the nation achieved in 2002. In 2004, they placed 18th in the final.
"Liubi, Liubi, I Love You" is a song recorded by Romanian group Todomondo, consisting of Andrei Ștefănescu, Ciro de Luca, Kamara Ghedi, Bogdan Tașcău, Valeriu Răileanu and Vlad Crețu. It was released as a CD single in 2007 by the Romanian Television (TVR) in Romania. The track is multilingual and is performed in six languages: English, Romanian, Spanish, Italian, French and Russian. Tașcău produced the song and co-wrote it with Crețu and Ghedi. Its lyrics deal with the theme of love and European clichés.
"O mio babbino caro" is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini to a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of Rinuccio, the boy she loves, have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio. It provides an interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and love in contrast with the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing, and feuding in medieval Florence. It provides the only set-piece in the through-composed opera.

As a singer of operatic pop music, Potts recorded the album One Chance, which topped sales charts in 13 countries. Before winning Britain's Got Talent, Potts was a manager at Carphone Warehouse. With TVR's inability to broadcast the contest, the Romanian entry became ineligible to compete and was removed from the contest.

The Romanian broadcaster Televiziunea Română (TVR) organised the national final Selecția Națională 2023 in order to select the Romanian entry for the 2023 contest. Twelve entries were selected to compete in the national final on 11 February 2023 where "D.G.T. " performed by Theodor Andrei was selected as the winner entirely by a public vote.
