Brett Morse (born 11 February 1989) is a British athlete who competes in the discus throw.
Born in Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, [2] He is a member of the Birchfield Harriers club and is currently coached by Andy Brittan. [2] He was previously coached by Vésteinn Hafsteinsson. This caused controversy due to Icelandic Haffesteinson's two-year ban from competition after a failed drug test for nandralone at the 1984 Summer Olympics. [3] Morse has a degree in sports management from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. [4]
Morse won the gold medal at the 2010 UK Championships, becoming the first Welshman to win the discus title. [4] [5] He competed for Wales at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, where he finished in sixth position. [6] At the 2011 World Championships, held in Daegu, South Korea, he advanced to the final where he finished in 12th place. [7] [8]
Morse represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2012 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, Finland, but failed to reach the discus final. [9] At the 2012 GB Olympic Athletics Trials on 24 June in Birmingham, Morse finished second, with a best throw of 62.27 metres (204.3 ft), behind Lawrence Okoye who won the event with a throw of 63.43 metres (208.1 ft). [10] The result meant that Okoye secured automatic selection for the 2012 Olympics but Morse was still 65 centimetres short of the 'A' qualification standard needed to guarantee his place. [10] [11]
In July 2012 Morse was confirmed as part of the Great Britain team for the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men's discus alongside compatriots Lawrence Okoye and Abdul Buhari. [12] The event was held at the Olympic Stadium on 6–7 August. [13]
The 2013 season saw Brett join up with at the time Welsh Athletics throwing coach, Andy Brittan. During the season Brett extended his own Welsh discus record to 66.84m, and won the British Athletics Championships held at Birmingham. He was invited to the London Grand Prix (Anniversary Games 2013 ) in London's Olympic Stadium, where he finished sixth in a world class field, narrowly missing out on fifth place by 4 cm. Brett was also selected by Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the 2013 World Athletics Championship in Moscow. He finished the 2013 season 8th in the list of the World Best throws for that year, one of only four British athletes to make the top ten in their respective disciplines.
During 2014 Morse parted company with his coach, and was still nursing a disc injury in his back which he first felt at the 2013 World championships whilst warming up for the qualification round. Despite this, in August of that year Brett was select to represent Wales in the Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow. He achieved 5th place with a throw of 60.84m, 3.16m behind the gold medal throw produced by USA based Vikas Gowda. [14]
This season Morse has gone back to basics and appointed a new coach, Nigel Bevan, who coached him previously (pre-2012), during a very successful period. While throwing in the Loughborough International in May, his opening competition of the season, he achieved a distance of 63.42m, greater than all of his throws of the previous season.
Dame Valerie Kasanita Adams is a retired New Zealand shot putter. She is a four-time World champion, four-time World Indoor champion, two-time Olympic, three-time Commonwealth Games champion and twice IAAF Continental Cup winner. She has a personal best throw of 21.24 metres (69.7 ft) outdoors and 20.98 metres (68.8 ft) indoors. These marks are Oceanian, Commonwealth and New Zealand national records. She also holds the Oceanian junior record (18.93 m) and the Oceanian youth record (17.54 m), as well as the World Championships record, World Indoor Championships record and Commonwealth Games record.
The West London Institute of Higher Education (WLIHE), a two-campus academic establishment, was located in Isleworth and East Twickenham, West London, UK from 1976 until 1995 when it became Brunel University College. In 1997 it was fully integrated into Brunel University London.
Carl Myerscough is an English retired track and field athlete. He specialised in the shot put and discus throw and exceeded the British record in the shot put with a best of 21.92m set in winning the NCAA championships in Sacramento, California in 2003, although the performance was not ratified by UK Athletics.
Philippa Kate Roles OLY was a Welsh discus thrower who competed at two Olympic and four Commonwealth Games. Roles was British junior athlete of the year – an honour presented at Buckingham Palace. She was the first British discus thrower to medal at junior European level; and narrowly missed out on a medal at under 23 level, finishing 4th. She competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Richard Thomas Buck is a former British sprinter who specialised in the 400 metres event. He is from York, and trains in Loughborough. Buck's current club is City of York A.C.. Previously, he had an 18-month spell at Scarborough A.C. He has been trained by his grandfather, Geoff Barraclough, and is now coached by Nick Dakin.
Stephen James Miller MBE is a British athlete who competes in the fields of Paralympic club and discus throwing. He has won three gold, one silver, and one bronze medal in the F32/51 club throw at the Paralympics. In Paralympic F32/51 discus he won one bronze medal.
David "Dai" Greene is a British hurdler who specialises in the 400 metres hurdles, competing internationally for both Wales and Great Britain, as well as Europe in the IAAF Intercontinental Cup.
Christopher Thompson is a British long-distance runner, who won the silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, on 27 July 2010 behind his compatriot Mo Farah. Prior to his 2010 medal win he had won the European U23 5000 m Championship in 2003. However he was initially unable to build on this victory, as he had substantial injury problems for a number of years. He is currently coached by Alan Storey.
Lawrence Okoye is a British track and field athlete and former American football defensive tackle. He is the British record holder in the discus event. Okoye became the first ever British athlete to win a medal in Discus at a European Championships during Munich 2022. He has also played rugby union.
Abdul Buhari is a British athlete who competes in the discus throw. He was born in Nigeria.
Derek Derenalagi is a British Paralympic discus thrower and former soldier.
Jack Green is a British sprint athlete who specialises in the 400m distance, along with the hurdles and the 4 × 400 m relay. He competed for the Great Britain team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Zharnel Hughes is an Anguilla-born British sprinter who specialises in the 100 metres and 200 metres. Born and raised in the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla, he has competed internationally for Great Britain in the Olympic Games, World Athletics and European Athletics events, and for England at the Commonwealth Games, since 2015. A double Commonwealth Games, double European Championships gold medalist as part of the 4 x 100 metres relay, Hughes has twice been European champion individually; over 100 metres in 2018, and 200 metres in 2022. In 2023, he broke both British sprint records, before winning his first global individual medal, a bronze in the 100 metres at the 2023 World championships.
Hollie Beth Arnold, is a British parasport athlete competing in category F46 javelin. Although born in Grimsby, she now lives and trains in Loughborough. She represents Wales in the Commonwealth Games. Arnold was the youngest ever field athlete to ever compete in the Paralympics/Olympics, at the age of 14 at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing throwing a personal best. She also threw a personal best in 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. She took the gold medal in the F46 javelin in the 2016 Rio Paralympics, also throwing a new world record at the same time. In 2021, at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, she took the bronze medal in the same event. In 2018, she became the first ever Javelin thrower in history to hold all four major titles in the same Paralympic/Olympic 4-year cycle: Rio Paralympics and world record 2016, London World Championships and world record 2017, Berlin European Championships and course record 2018 and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and world record 2018. She also holds four consecutive world titles: 2013 Lyon, 2015 Doha, 2017 London, and 2019 Dubai.
Aled Siôn Davies is a Welsh Paralympian athlete competing mainly in category F42 throwing events. In 2012 he became the world record holder of the F42 shot put and in the 2012 Summer Paralympics he took the bronze medal in shot put and gold in the discus. In 2013 Davies took the World Championship gold in both the shot put and discus in Lyon. He won double gold in his home country at the 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships in the shot put and discus. This followed his silver medal in the F42-44 discus from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where he represented Wales. Davies also took part in the Channel 4 TV series Celebrity SAS: Who dares wins
Kyron Duke is a powerlifter and Paralympian track and field athlete from Wales, UK competing in category F41 throwing events. Duke has represented Wales in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in powerlifting. In 2012 he qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in javelin and shot put.
Beverley Jones is a Paralympian from Wales competing in category F37 throwing events. Jones won a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games as an EAD in the 100m sprint. Jones has qualified for four Summer Paralympics from 2000 to 2012 finishing fourth twice, in the sprint in 2000 at Sydney and in the shot put at Athens in 2004.
Jade Louise Lally is a British track and field athlete. She won a bronze medal for England in the women's discus at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and represented Great Britain at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her personal best is 65.10m set at the New South Wales Open Championships (AUS) on 27th February 2016.
Andrew Butchart is a British runner who competed in the 5000 metres event at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics. He is the current Scottish record holder in the 3000, 5000 and 10,000 metre events. In June 2023, he broke the parkrun “world-record”.
Adele Nicoll is a British shot putter, discus thrower and bobsledder. She has won multiple Welsh Athletics Championships events, and won the shot put event at the 2022 British Athletics Championships. She came second in the 2021–22 Bobsleigh World Cup event in Sigulda, Latvia alongside Mica McNeill. Nicoll was a reserve for the 2022 Winter Olympics, and competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
